Inovação
Por que a ideia é única e qual o diferencial em relação aos demais projetos do mesmo campo de atuação?
The idea is built on the study and practice of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity between the areas of health and education to promote human development of children with cerebral palsy and their families. We seek to overcome the dichotomy science/existence, as well as the fragmented and reductionist views of the subject and its relationship with oneself, others and the world. We seek a line of study and work in which objectivity and subjectivity complement the observation of the whole, thus creating the field of research of indicators of real situations on quality of life of our audience, providing subsidies for the formulation of strategic bases for effective and efficient resolution of problems involving children with cerebral palsy and their families, but also the creation of effective preventive actions to reduce the incidence of cerebral palsy. We directly involve the family in the process, making it the subject and co-actor, leads to the understanding of their role in the development of their child, providing emotional support necessary for their strengthening, with a set of practical and effective actions. NACPC’s innovative actions are based on health, education, prevention and inclusion, and involve the child, family and society. All actions undertaken with and for families aim at the strengthening of their resilience through interventions of support, optimism, dedication and love, and as cause and effect give emphasis and importance to family relationships, fostering a positive reconstruction of life with greater awareness.

Quais foram os impactos obtidos até o momento?
There is an important social impact of the work on the individual and collective levels of everyone involved in the projects. Today, in general, we notice more professionals trained to work as multipliers in the care of families of children with disabilities, greater integration among the professionals of the institutions involved in our actions, change of attitude towards people with disabilities, greater social inclusion and education of children with disabilities, families more aware of their rights and duties, changes in the posture of the family with individuals with disabilities, in their posture towards society, in the sense of acquiring greater autonomy, independence and critical view, increased membership and participation of members of families in the care of children with disabilities, increased knowledge of the academic public about cerebral palsy and the inclusion of children with disabilities in mainstream education. Moreover, a good demonstration of how all the work contributes to a paradigm shift with consequently a change in attitudes is the number of children successfully included in mainstream education, more teachers aware of and partners in the educational inclusion of children with cerebral palsy and parents more involved in the development process of their children and engaged as multiplying agents. Our project started with 250 children enrolled and only 4 included in regular schools. Today there are around 400 children and families served and approximately 180 included in regular schools.
Problema
Alarming data are presented about cerebral palsy (CP). How: 30-40 thousand new cases of CP per year in Brazil, the incidence is 7:1000 born alive. Of the 650 million disabled people in the world, 400 million live in developing countries, or of the 400 million and 800 thousand enrollments in basic education in Bahia, only 38 thousand registrations are of disabled children, ie less than 1% of the population with disabilities. We observe a chaos on physical accessibility, architecture in cities, lack of adequate public transport, precarious health assistance and non-acceptance of these people in society, including regular schools and health services, habilitation / rehabilitation of the child with cerebral palsy. Although today, the laws and standards exist and denote vehement support for the inclusion of children with disabilities.

A história

During the period in Sao Paulo, while earning a master's and doctorate, I was called to assist a child who would change the path of my life, it was a child with cerebral palsy who had a testicular tumor and lung metastasis. I had never seen until that time a patient with cerebral palsy. At that time the academic and social idealism that surrounded me reached my heart and I decided to deepen my knowledge about children with cerebral palsy, because I felt at that moment how difficult it was for those children having their intelligence preserved in a body that did not meet their commands. I went to work for an organization that offered shelter for 700 people with cerebral palsy. There I experienced the difficult routine of that reality until then fairly new to me, a young doctor. The institution was in Guarulhos and I needed to catch the subway, then bus and finally a great path to walk. It was a lot of work to get there. In 2001, reaching all levels of academic advancement, the desire to exercise greater social action compelled me to the path I am in now. My life was very structured: work, career, academic recognition, family. But I wanted to give back the opportunities I had in my career, and help those children with cerebral palsy with whom I had the honor of living and learning with have also their opportunity to change the present and future of their lives. I always believed that it was because of them that my life went so well structured, especially in financial terms. And what could I do to reward them? How could I repay what life had so generously bestowed upon me? So, I became certain that my project for life would be to create, innovate and change the way children with cerebral palsy and their families were taken care of. In 2001, I inaugurated the Center for the Assistance of Children with Cerebral Palsy: NACPC, a non-profit organization, unique in Bahia, which serves free of charge, about 400 children and adolescents and their families living in Salvador, metropolitan cities and the semi - arid interior of Bahia and has since developed an innovative and transformative work, recognized by UNESCO & UNICEF, and more recently by Ashoka.
Conte-nos a biografia do(a) inovador(a) social que criou ou lidera esta inovação
Pedro Guimarães was born in Salvador-Bahia, on September 22, 1964. At 03 years old he moved to Rio de Janeiro with his family, father, mother and 03 sisters, where he remained until he was 13. In between, he experienced the separation of his parents, following the early flee of his father, leaving the responsibility of caring for the whole family only with his mother, which was overloaded of work to survive and care for 04 children. This fact made Pedro learn early on how to solve his own problems, developing an unusual sense of practicality, the courage to face his own fears, the development of resilience and an unquestioning faith. Back in Salvador, in 1977, he continued his studies supported by this mother´s struggle and his own quest for growth and development, innate characteristic of his personality. By the end of 1982, he applied for the university and was approved. He joined the School of Medicine and Public Health, Salvador, against the will of his mother, who insisted he studied engineering. Even without the necessary support at home, he began to study medicine graduating in 1989. As a student, from the first year, he went to the surgical area, especially in the discipline of Surgical Technique. Under the supervision and care of Prof.. Celso Figueroa, he begun to exercise a leadership role already in college. He organized, together with another group of students, all the practical part that included classes of instruments, types of nodes, types of probe, amongst others, with the experimental classes performed on rats, simulating the surgeries performed in humans. This type of approach has been very innovative, especially remembering what happened nearly 20 years ago. They proved that when it became aware of the types of experimental classes that were held here, the Faculty of Medicine, USP - Ribeirão Preto absorbed the experience of the team and implemented the same methodology in their classes Technique and Experimental Surgery. A long journey began and it was always kept as a base reference and differential Experimental Surgery. After his graduation, Peter took a test to become a Resident in Sao Paulo. City in which he settled, he was approved to perform medical residency at Hospital 09 July. After completion of medical residency, he was approved by the Brazilian Society of Urology, becoming the Chair Member and Member of the Society, returning, after that, to his hometown. But he was willing to follow the slope of academic education, realizing that he would need to invest, he decided to leave the office and hospital, leaving with courage, an early stage, already very well structured, to return to Sao Paulo to complete the master's and doctoral. Again, this was not a decision that gained the support of his family. It was a stage also of very difficult choices that would change his life. Living there, in order not to lose the bond with the faculty of medicine at home, he had to travel every 02 months to teach and especially to coordinate the group of students / instructors who conducted the practical and scientific discipline. Even from afar, his power did not diminished as a teacher and he coordinated by far, using fax, phone meetings via speakerphone, since the Internet was not as accessible. It was an exercise of leadership, ability to mobilize and motivate an entire team. All this more than 1000 km away. In 1997, he defended the Master's thesis at the Federal University of São Paulo - Paulista School of Medicine and was approved. In 1999 he defended his Ph.D. thesis in Medicine, Federal University of São Paulo - Paulista School of Medicine, approved with grade 10 and quoted with approval. It was an exquisite work, which has developed a special technique of staining tissues of guinea pigs to evaluate malformations in rats. His motivation was related to their inclination to seek solutions to social problems based on his humanitarian medical vision. As a teacher, he was always associated with the technical information with the scientific view on the humanitarian care of patients. Until 2002 he remained in private medical school, and after that he was approved in the public system as an Adjunct Professor of the Federal University of Bahia, continuing his contribution as an educator and humanitarian doctor.
