Por que a ideia é única e qual o diferencial em relação aos demais projetos do mesmo campo de atuação?
The idea of a ‘secret affection’ emerged from the analysis of previous research (published in the book “Silent violence of incest”, in 2004, and the movie “Hearing the silence”, in 2003).
This new movie ‘Secret Affection’ is a fiction, mid-length film. It tells the story of a girl-woman in a distant future, in no particular place, by herself. In a given night, while sleeping, she has intense, disturbing, apprehensive dreams. These dreams lead her back to her infancy and to very live memories.
This movie reconstitutes innumerous stories of children whose lives were annihilated by sexual violence. The ‘secret affection – vocabulary’ (book) and ‘secret affection – revisited dreams’ (booklet) include manifest and interpretive testimonies about the dreams filmed, narratives off the movie, and theoretical psychoanalytic concepts. This material aims to add technical knowledge in order to improve understanding on incest and its clinical symptoms. It represents a theoretical/ clinical challenge to build the foundations for a future “theory of incest”. The newness of ‘Secret Affection’ project is to present a conceptual view on the sentimental dimension of sexual violence, based on clinical experience. The movie ‘Secret Affection’ and the books target not only psychoanalysts, but also specialists in any field of work who are interested in enhancing their understanding of sexual violence, pedophilia, and infant sexual exploration. That is the reason for a straightforward approach to the concepts, that could capture the best possible: a word, a desire, a thought, a sentiment, and an emotion from the child exposed to violence.

The material of ‘Secret Affection’ is a result of more than a decade of Psychoanalytic research with more than 3,000 children who suffered incestuous sexual violence and were assisted while that was happening to their lives. Data obtained via research, the movie and the books make possible to create a national program for the prevention of sexual violence. In 2002, the Psychoanalytic Clinic of Violence (CLIVIOL) jointly with several national and international institutions founded the REVIRANCA network (Turnaround network). This is a virtual network specialized in support and consulting in the area of sexual violence.
This Network became a clinical and research reference in Brazil as a result of various projects such as the trainings, conference, debates and participation in movie festivals, as well as the impact of the material previous produced, both nationwide (16 States trained and donation of more than 1,000 multimedia kits of Psychoanalysis and Violence – includes de book ‘Silent Violence of Incest’, and the movie ‘Hearing the Silence’) and internationally (Series of Italian Conferences in 2006, at universities in Milan and Brescia). REVIRANCA also executes a program focused improving assistance (case discussion, and dissemination of new clinical practices to a larger group of Professionals (transformative and multiplier agents). The impact and consequences of these events led to the expansion of REVIRANCA and revealed new and valuable data. At the moment, the Network holds a program with more than 175 partner organizations (see www.clinicadaviolencia.com.br), that belong to civil society, non-government and government, and work in fields such as health, education and justice. These materials, in the same way of those previously generated (via multimedia kit in Psychoanalysis and Violence), are expanding the knowledge base and strengthening REVIRANCA Network and partner institutions, which can be incorporated into the National Program to Fight Sexual Violence in Brazil.
Problema
According to WHO, sexual violence is a serious public health problem that kills approximately two million people every year. It also recognizes the severe implications on mental health of affected individuals (psychiatric disorder such as depression, psychosis, suicide and clinical diseases). Incestuous sexual violence is a little known problem in the statistics, given its invisibility due to the intra-family realm. UNICEF (2009) points that 0.5 to 1.5 billion boys and girls are victims of any time of violence every year. Among industrialized countries, 5% to 10% of girls and up to 5% of boys are reached by severe sexual violence, and another three times are victims of other degrees of this violence. 47% of cases are among those below 19-years old, whereas 26% are between zero and 4-years old. WHO confirms that this situation tends to worsen in the next years. Sexual violence is the second largest type of crime against infant and youth. Population statistics on incestuous sexual violence are scarce; however, surveys conducted by CLIVIOL show that 85% of assisted children between ages of 3 to 9 suffered incestuous sexual violence.
Ações
The Project encompasses a set of initiatives to create a program of sexual violence prevention in Brazil. The first initiative is the production, and launch of mid-length movie ‘Secret Affection’ (august 2009). The Project aims to approach the issue of infant sexual violence through cinematographic and literary languages. By using a cinematographic, literary and psychoanalytical language, the second initiative aims to build awareness and alert children, youth at risk and adolescents direct or indirectly involved in a violent and/or sexual exploration context; the target countries are Brazil and other countries in which the infant sexual violence rates are significant. The movie ‘Secret Affection’ is available in six languages besides Portuguese, with an international focus (English, French, Italian and German).
Resultados
The underlying idea of this project is to create a permanent program of awareness building, a singular environment through which innovative methodologies in advanced research, learning, and trainings will enable children and youth, their families, and specialists, to become change agents. The expected result of this novel initiative is a significant action against sexual violence, effectively contributing to expand the work of prevention networks, CLIVIOL partners’ network and REVIRANÇA network. In this way, it will generated more accurate information to promote prevention programs against infant sexual violence in Brazil and other countries where these materials are distributed, given priority to those where sexual violence reaches high rates.
O que é essencial para que sua inovação seja bem sucedida nos próximos 3 anos?
The sustainability of this project in the coming years will arise from a more intense intervention, to be obtained via product distribution, awareness building, training and building capacity of professionals engaged along the whole program. Products (movie and books) were created with a new visual and conceptual language, and are more objective and accessible; with that we seek to simplify the understanding about psyche mechanisms that originates symptoms that result on human violence, in particular sexual violence against children and adolescents. The results achieved by communicating this knowledge have already been felt after the launch of ‘Secret Affection’ in August 2009. In the coming years, we hope to expand, via REVIRANCA Network and all the institutional partners – current and future – to join efforts to accomplish a reduction of violence and the negative social and human impacts it generates.
The self-sustainability of this project will enable a minimization of the current use of inadequate or outdated practices in the evaluations, interview techniques for diagnosis and treatments that do not respect the word and the truth of a child. We hope that in the next years, the direct relationship with specialists, via REVIRANCA, will create mechanisms of protection, and that speed up the use of testimonial methodology in psychotherapy and psychoanalytical treatments. In this way, this methodology would be offer an alternative treatment based on only on ‘inquiring’ the child but also on overcoming and curing the trauma. Broadening the protection net in the future is essential for its success and to feed back the system with updated research data, advanced methods of evaluation, supervision, consulting and more efficient and accurate case referral.

The largest obstacle to project implementation lies in the extreme passivity of government institutions to take in and adhere to the inter-sectoral strategies aimed at ensuring the rights of children and adolescents and duties of the State, the Family and Society in situations of sexual abuse against children and adolescents. The lack of resources specifically devoted to this area via public transfers, and especially for the non-governmental organizations, result on a thwart of studies, quality professionals trained and the care offered to the repressed demand formed by child victims.

Institutional partnerships are extremely important to guarantee success in expanding this project, to reach wide dissemination of this material, both in television and journalism, as well as in current networks, networks of violence prevention [eg, VPA]. The distribution of this movie and books should be done as soon as possible as it aims at disseminating new and specific knowledge in order to prepare professionals to develop specific activities in their institutions and partner networks. This will require coordination, communication, collaboration and management of information between members and all the partner institutions. The contribution of additional resources can speed up the steps for this much needed initiative.
Quais são as três ações mais relevantes e necessárias para o crescimento da sua inovação ou organização?
The CLIVIOL to expand the REVIRANÇA network in each institution to ensure wide dissemination of the material, film and books, as follows.
(1) Expansion of an information system. REVIRANÇA Network already operates via virtual means, with exchange of knowledge and facilitation of case referrals to the public. The use of this material in the network will make the film, articles and the concepts of the book accessible; electronic media for information integration, including the Internet (websites, emails, chats) will also facilitate distribution.
(2) Training and qualification in the network. To train and qualify 100 professionals to become key references, links within REVIRANÇA that connect with partner networks, peer educators and social entrepreneurs to act in accordance with the ethical and legal principles. Besides, to create a structured, objective-oriented work plan, that includes control and enforcement mechanisms for internal connections and links between the partner organizations (public relations to facilitate the social integration of the network). The Network will provide the material and develop research and basic studies on sexual violence (such as for education / environment vs. violence, identifying high-risk groups, establishing procedures and methods for surveillance of sexual violence, design and monitoring of pilot projects ), contributing to the increased capacity of public institutions in their procedures.
(3) Coordination of the Network. To build awareness in the network (in 10 selected Brazilian states) via integration meetings (meetings, workshops, seminars). Network REVIRANÇA has a body of professionals who develop programmatic points with a multidisciplinary focus in alliance with existing prevention networks and encouraging community participation. The network may be virtual tool for exchange of knowledge, as well as vehicle to expand the areas of research, advisory, consultancy and prevention of violence.

The Psychoanalytic Clinic of Violence (CLIVIOL) was founded in 1996 to treat children and adolescents sexually abused. It has assisted more than 3,000 violent incidents in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Niterói and surrounding municipalities. Of these, 35% reported sexual violence, and 70% of the cases were children between 3 and 12 years who have suffered incestuous sexual violence. The Study Center from Psychoanalytic Clinic of Violence was created in 1997. Between 1997 and 2001 more than five training courses / conferences psychoanalytic were held for professionals who work in municipal and state assistance to abuse. The period from 2001 to 2004 was devoted to conceive and create the REVIRANÇA network. The ‘Silent Violence of Incest’, was published at the International Book Fair / SP, Ed Cliviol / Imprensa Oficial SP and awarded the The Jabuti Prize in 2005. The movie ‘Hearing the Silence: incest through the eyes of the child’, won film festivals of short films in several countries, including Argentina (Festival HUMAHAC/Patagônia2005) and Cuba (Festival of short films Havana | 2005).
Conte-nos a biografia do(a) inovador(a) social que criou ou lidera esta inovação
Psychoanalyst, filmmaker and artist. Holds a Master in Clinical Psychology at PUC - RJ, and is the Director of the Psychoanalytic Clinic of Violence – RJ. Worked for 30 years with clinical and academic research. Was a researcher for 28 years originally from the Brazilian Center for Childhood and Adolescence - CBIA and later the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ.
Member of Ashoka (Lifetime Member of Ashoka Fellowship - International Professional Association of Public Entrepreneurs) since 1998.
Psychoanalytic experience has resulted in dozens of books and articles, including "Object-Must - The Silent Violence of Incest - Options for Treatment Psychoanalytic Clinic Violence," published in the book Violence and Victimology, Del Rey, Belo Horizonte, 2001 ; ‘Vocabulary of Secret Affection’, published in the book “Incest and Parental Alienation-realities that justice insists not to see”., Journal of the Courts Ed, Porto Alegre, 2007.
Films written and directed: (1) ‘Hearing the Silence - the incest through the eyes of a child in analysis (2000); (2) ‘Secret Affection’ - the movie [worldwide release on August 28, 2009 / Official Film in the Granada Festival, Spain, in 2009 and enrolled in the Festivals of Paris, Chicago, Toronto and Torino, 2009].
Books published and accepted for publication: (1) ‘The Silent Violence of Incest’, launched in the 2004 International Book Fair - Sao Paulo, and winner of the 2005 Jabuti -category Psychology and Psychoanalysis and Education. (2.) ‘A Spoken Self-Portrait’ (booklet of playful sensorial design), that holds an Honorable Mention on the Sergio Motta Award); (3) ‘Secret Affection - vocabulary’ (accepted for publication – Imprensa Oficial / SP, 2009). 4. ‘Secret Affairs - dreams revisited’ (accepted for publication – Imprensa Oficial / SP, 2009).
