Nice to see this project here. AS the government machinery is functioning properly in Nepal, such a device/mechanism will be immensely useful for security of a society.
This technology is suitable to all other countries too.

Thanks dai, sure this idea is spreading day by day.We have also planned it to expand outside Nepal.

I think the idea of community siren is just brilliant. It provides much needed security for middle class Nepali people where government, politicians and police has utterly failed.

Just recently I read a news article about a home invasion at Deputy Inspector General's house. If these thugs are bold enough to loot DIG's house, they can pretty much do anything. Ram Laxman's unique solution has come to rescue hundreds of Nepali Home Owners who can't rely on government to protect them from these types of crimes.

Here is how it works. "Community Rescue Siren System" or CRSS uses the most advanced thermal detection technology to detect a home intrusion, which sets off alarm in the house and also sends text messages and phone calls to neighbors and other community members that have participated in CRSS. Their effort to leverage existing security technologies and involve community to create a unique solution shows the genius of "Community Rescue Siren System" and has earned much deserved praises from Nepal's national media.

I wish them success in their endeavor.

This has so much potential and can make things so much better in a country like Nepal. The response time for emergency calls can be dramatically improved.

So fascinating! I really enjoyed reading the entry. I'm curious about the financing model behind the innovation -- how is the service paid for? How is the organization ensuring its own financial sustainability?

I'd also love to hear more about the background of the technology itself... was the system something developed by your organization, or is it purchased from elsewhere?

Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!

Thanks for your valuable comment,
These days our country Nepal is facing various security related problems, government is not able to maintain security for the public, being innovative in the technical field, we designed a gadget community rescue siren system. The system is run by local community with community funding. Each household pay min 15 USD to 25 USD to install the siren system in their community. After paying the charge our organization will provide special equipment (Community Siren System), installation service, Orientation program and Five year’s replacement guarantee. Hundreds of such communities are self forming these days.
The device is our unique design and unique practice in the communities. We also registered patent for the technology. We have designed various such products that will help people to live better life.

Hi,
This concept of neighborhood watch has been practiced all over the world, but due to lack of interaction, incentive or alertness, most emergencies are not noticed.
Would your organization provide only the equipment/security alarm? Are there any partnerships with local authorities?

Thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for your comment.
Sure, this kind of technologies are practiced all over the world, but the difference is it will not need any password or voice to make emergency alarm within the community. It also sends the GIS information with caller detail to the local police or specified 10 locations so that community members as well as local security authorities can be automatically informed in short period of time.

Thanks !

Hi,
Since it doesn't need any password, etc., what happens if it is pressed by mistake, by a child for example?
The idea of alerting the authorities simultaneously is a great one, because there could be be situations that residents would not be able to handle on their own (medical, armed robbery, etc).
All the best!

Hi Rachana,
Thank you very much for your valuable comment.
First of all the siren number is a cell number ( in Nepal the numbers are in 10 digits), but we can save it as our easiest way like AAA siren, Emergency, Alarm etc in our mobile phone. In our Land line we can save it in abbreviated dialing facility from our telecom network. If any community members got problem he/she should dial the siren numbers from his/her mobile or land line, after it got ring it will automatically bang the alarm siren if the caller is registered in the system. "It doesn't need any password" means, it will automatically take action after it got called from registered members because it is difficult to press or make any voice over telephone in such severe condition. so that it is less possibility of pressing mistakenly or by a child. we also provide a sample of community rules and regulations for the community in which if there is false alarm, the member should pay a penalty for the community and if any member don't attend in the gathering while emergency alarm occurs, he/she also pay a penalty for the community .

The best way to ensure that the idea spreads is that if it is a success in the region. Once you have implemented it successfully there, I am sure it will be much easier to propagate it elsewhere.

Would you keep a record of instances where the system has been used and has proven indispensable (at least initially so that others can also see the financial/social benefits)?

Hi Rachana,

Thank you for your suggestion to keep record of system installation so that other people can see the social benefits.

Actually we have managed these all records where the community formed. we also recorded it in KML file format with its members information, so that authorized people can contact the beneficiaries directly.
we put all the record in google earth and our own record.

Pls see the following link where you can see the communities within the Kathmandu Valley.

Hi Ram,
The Google Earth is a good resource. Once the project reaches some level of maturity, maybe you could share the data so that people in other regions as well can benefit from this system.

Hi Rachana,
we actually plotting the data of community members in google earth to share the information in various locations by KML or KMZ files if needed. we are also providing this information to national police headquarter, so that rescue can be easier from government security.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us.

Dear Ram according to your experience what are the main barriers or challenges so that social business models can thrive?

Ram laxman Prasad Rimal profile img
Thu, 06/10/2010 - 22:47

Dear Gaston,
Social business is not formed just for money and financial earnings so the first barrier is the sustainability of the project,if the project get return from the community it can survive well.
if the project is targeted for the whole bunch of members within the community it is easy as our experience, ensuring them of the out put of the project still remains challenging. In our venture we got numerous of good results and many newspapers wrote about the outputs so it is not that much challenging for us.
in our experience since the project is targeted to all of the dwellers within the community, any of them in the community comes and state that he/she is not able to pay the money as the other member are paying due to his poverty, we contribute such member from our side, after we face many such cases we allocated 5 members for the free of cost within 25 members community. This is also challenging for us and we are seeking government grant for such members.
Gathering the whole members of the community and conducting the training is also challenging since some of the initiators are needed from the local level.
