This is a novel idea not only for delivering better health care at lower cost but also for providing jobs to people in low income neighborhoods. It testable and scalable.
Prevention and early treatment of common diseases such as obesity, diabetes, asthma and sexually treated diseases (such as AIDS) can prevent much harm.
Obesity can be prevented and the onset of diabetes delayed by changes diet and exercise. Furthermore, poor blood circulation in the feet caused by diabetes if not treated early (often with simple and inexpensive interventions) can result in complications such as joint replacement and amputation. It is obvious that AIDS can be reduced in incidence by education in safe sexual practices.
The training necessary to do the work to achieve these ends is neither prolonged nor intense. There are many people in low-income neighborhoods who would welcome the chance to get this kind of training and the opportunity to use it in their own communities. It would not only give them much needed income but also enhance their self-esteem.
A program to do these things can easily be tested for efficacy through analysis of doctors’ and emergency room visits or the like. If it works, it can be scaled up quickly and easily because of its simplicity
