What makes your innovation unique?

In the 21st century indicating the arrival of knowledge economy the new environmental, energy-saving and field-saving building non-baked brick, will positively effect the severely lack for land, energy source and resource,
The new brick made of renewable burned rice husk & will endorse or even enforce prohibiting the worldwide used solid clay brick which is made on the account of our fertile land natural resources mud/clay which is continuously exploited, and burned into much polluted kilns using fossil fuel to fabricate fired clay brick
• The new brick is made from biomass "waste of the waste" and not like any other walling materials that is made only from waste.
• The new brick is exclusively made of carbonized rice husk & not like other bricks made from much polluted fly ash "coal"
The new brick is unique in itself &
• competent for both load-bearing, and non load-bearing engineering concepts, to suit both Urban multi-storey buildings using type B brick, and rural villages houses using type A brick,
Both types are of:
+ Light weight, fire proof with exceptional heat insulation characteristic,
+Energy-saving brick cheaply made of waste of the waste burned reject of no value,
The new brick, cures by itself, when left to dry, in an open space storage area. (No mud/clay exploitation, no more incremental CO2 emission such as the case with clay bricks)
For example, Chinese Children:
Fired Clay Brick making is an important economic activity in rural China.
There are over 100 000 small and micro enterprises producing more than 140 billion clay bricks per year and digging away of top soil, results in Degradation of land .
The clay brick industry provides livelihood to an estimated 15 million people. (In China)
The workers are generally very poor, and they work under appalling conditions. Absence of any form of security, low wages,
No health-care facilities, unsanitary conditions, no education for children, unsafe and hard conditions for women.
All these characterize

Do you have a patent for this idea?

Impact

Tell us about the social impact of your innovation. Please include both numbers and stories as evidence of this impact

As we All will share & bear the drastic consequences of our indifference act toward Mother Earth Nature burning our land natural resources polluting our air to fabricate clay bricks, using fossil fuel to cure the widely used clay bricks.
This new innovation is not only about the requirement of modernization of the construction industry, but an urgent requirement of sustainable development on national economy, society, environment and resources.
Collective results show a successful project application even though made on small scale at Abis a near-by rural area –Alexandria, Egypt.
Positive impacts started more than 2 years ago & I was able to train much of the poor farmers on how to fabricate the brick, using my own small hydraulic press & steel moulds, which was made available free of charge for them to build their new sustainable houses.
Farmers are able now to fabricate their own bricks using their free on-hand available burned husk, mix it and press it and build all by themselves. Please note that before applying this transferred simple technology they were striving to buy most expensive clay bricks which cost them almost 45 $/1000 brick
This simple process is still on going, and more farmers are now using the press and molds, for their own benefit to build more cheap thus sustainable healthy houses to live in.

Problem: Describe the primary problem(s) that your innovation is addressing

• World Food Crisis
The innovation will preserve our land natural resources clay/mud to cultivate food not to fabricate bricks each 1000 new brick will safeguard 3 cubic meter of fertile clay soil to cultivate not to fabricate clay bricks.
In addition would or could solve the dilemma of the last G8 summit energy strategy/tragedy, which plans to grow more CORN CROPS to convert it to ethanol FUEL, not to feed a Famine World, Meantime they are ignoring the fact, that we burn our fertile land to fabricate Clay Bricks not cultivate FOOD
Minimizing air pollution, then Live-stock will also enjoy more green grass & for us will enjoy more red meat & more oxygen to easily digest (by the way I am not Vegetarian) we both will enjoy nature God blessings.

• Global Warming effect,
No more CO2 from clay brick factories when burning in kilns using fossil fuel to cure their clay bricks.
A tone of gasified i.e. ecologically burned rice husk will replace 415 liters of petrol or 378 liters of kerosene fossil fuels and will prevent 2,500 pounds of carbon dioxide gas harmful effluents.

Actions: Describe the steps that you are taking to make your innovation a success. Include a description of the business model. What might prevent that success?

These steps are:
1+ Personal initiative:
“Knowledge is Solution, Culture are People”,
I am more than ready & willing to pass the KNOW HOW, even my personal on hand expertise on how to fabricate more bricks for their sustainable houses from rice husk; such ready to go project could be easily replicated, since major raw material, rice husk, exists in abundant quantities, almost everywhere around the globe & available free of charge. Moreover the use of a simple technology to fabricate this new innovative bricks makes it easier to apply by
* Manual mixing &
* Press into molds, then
* leave to dry/cure in open air storage area, without the need for fire kilns much polluted process.
2+ Adapting to logical technological succeeding orders:
My innovations will follow others most successful applied technologies such as biomass gasification which is mainly sponsored by the World Bank,
* The existing applied innovation formula:
Rice husk gasification--- bio-energy + char (burned rice husk)
* My successive innovation new formula:
Char + cement + …------ energy saving building bricks
3+ Adopting Perfect partnerships:
Assuring the multiple benefit of the joint venture efforts & marginal success, of each other innovation Alexis & I, are now active partners for the last 3 or more years, especially that each one of us compliment the other, and start working together the ” Zero Waste Management Project”
http://rolexawards.com/en/the-laureates/alexisbelonio-home.jsp
4+ Offering all three green products:
1. Rice husk fuelled stove
2. Clean bio-fuel from rice husk
3. Building bricks made from the 2 above reject burned/gasified rice husk.
**Finally will continue and maintain communications with all the mentioned on your list, type of Organization, and till they realize how precious our land natural resource is for all of us to preserve, and for All to endorse or enforce the following urgent requirements of sustainable development & coordinate between
Economic Construction
Ecological Equilibrium &
Environment Protection

Three Plants are needed – for each major activity
A. Stove & Canister Fabrication
Hydraulic press machines, milling machine, rollers, bar folders, welding which will include arc, acetylene and resistance
Welder& stiffener set of tools and jigs.

B. Rice Husk Fuel Production
Equipment needed, will include sifter for separating various
Particle sizes, winnower for removing light particles, rotary dryer to reduce the moisture of rice husk as well as to torrify the material to reduce volatile matters, fuel storage bins, and weighing scales.

C. Building Materials Production
In this Brick production division, a fully automated brick production line with an output capacity 0f 2500 cubic meter bricks per month ( 1 Million brick of size 23 x 11 x 11 cm3).

Results: Describe the expected results of these actions over the next three years. Please address each year separately, if possible

The future of this invention/innovation is guaranteed as long as rice is grown on every continent except Antarctica, and since the hull represents on average 20% of the harvested weight of rice, our planet ends up with an abundance of this scaly residue.
More than 100,000,000 Metric Tons of rice hulls are generated each year throughout the world.
These abundant agriculture wastes are available Free-of-Charge which will make the new walling material more competent, cheaper, and energy saving building bricks.

Success in Year 1: (600 characters or less)
Project short lead-time:
As the innovation is not only an idea but actually a ready to go project, thus the project could start immediately without the need for lengthy researches, and costly testing hence it is already patented and validated for building and construction.
Expected a Breakeven point by the end of the 1st year

Success in Year 2: (600 characters or less)
Replicable project
For future expansion, replication is to be made thro' a Satellite network of small semi automatic brick production line, and small workshops to fabricate the stoves & sold directly to the surrounding communities, as direct beneficiaries will be located beside major rice mills factories to serve all nearby locations.
Expected conservable revenues, attained by the start of the second year of project implementation.

Success in Year 3: (600 characters or less)
Export potential
Moreover to earn hard currency & benefit from the currency exchange rates &getting more support from local governments which encourages the Export Sector, we will also introduce our products to compete in the export trade market, especially in the Middle East & Arab countries mainly characterized with hot atmosphere, using the highly thermal insulation brick and enjoy indoor cool climate.
What might prevent that success?
• Primarily, People lack awareness toward man-made Environmental crisis
• The indifference of most People, Governments Officials, Environment Ministers, NGO’s, FAO, UNDP, UNEP, WHO, UNIDO, World Bank, just name it, they all contacted but all efforts are in vain.
• Communications Difficulties already encountered to convince people to adapt to new, even though simpler technology (different cultures)
• Finally Fund raising or Grant approval.

How many people will your project serve annually?

More than 10,000

What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?

Less than $50

Does your innovation seek to have an impact on public policy?

Yes

If your innovation seeks to impact public policy, how?

Yes and such the exemplary case with the Chinese government that further increases the pace of the renovation on walling material on the strategic height of sustainable development. To consolidate the achievement of Prohibiting of Using Solid Clay Brick and further propel the innovation on walling material, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Land Resources P.R.C, the Ministry of Construction P.R. China, and the Ministry of Agriculture together established FAGAIBANHUANZI 2004 No.2450 Decision: to carry out together the check up on prohibiting of using solid clay brick Hollow Block Using in Site in Beijing and generalizing new walling material, which fully embodies the succession and stability of the national policy on walling material innovation. Meanwhile, to encourage and develop new walling material to substitute solid clay brick and support the utilization of waste resources, GUOYUANLING No.82, GUOFA 1992 No.72, CAISHUIZI 1994 No.001, CAISHUIZI 1995 No. 44, GUOBANFA 1999 No.72 and CAISHUI 2001 No.198 Document specify that to develop new walling material can enjoy series of tax preference policies

As I said earlier that my innovations will follows others most successful innovations such as biomass gasification applied technology and mainly sponsored by the World Bank.
From this standing point I will be honored to introduce my colleague Mr. Alexis Belonio. The first prize winner of the Rolex Award 2008 for his state of the art rice husk fuelled "stove with canister", and "clean bio-fuel" rival to natural gas quality from rice husk waste
http://rolexawards.com/en/the-laureates/alexisbelonio-home.jsp
Alexis & I, are now active partners for the last 3 or more years, especially that each one of us compliment the other, and start working together the ” Zero Waste Management Project”, ensuring the multiple benefit of the joint venture efforts & marginal success, of each other innovation when both are united maximizing income & minimize all 3 factories operating expenses cost
Moreover and as a result of my relentless persuading my project objectives, I recently received an invitation to visit "Tanzanian Rural Energy Agency" to discuss my project, and I hope to win this competition to accept this invitation and travel to Tanzania to further proceed with my project and help organizations such as MRHP Tanzania to benefit from their burned rice husk in building more houses from their rejected waste of the waste burned rice husk.

We would like to learn more about how your initiative is financially supported. Please explain your business plan/revenue model

It stills a personal initiative and continues to stands on its own.
I financed buying the manually operating hydraulic press, and steel molds also was given for free to the Abis village community to enable them to build their new sustainable houses.
I also trained the Abis villagers and rice cultivators on how to fabricate the new bricks using the press and their on-hand available free renewable waste rice husk.
Business Plan
The proposed project aims to engage three business activities producing three major Products,
The proposed business will have three Major divisions or operational units

• The Stoves
Fabrication Division will take charge of the Manufacturing of the rice husk stoves and of the fabrication of Canisters.

The Story

read more↑ hide↑ hide

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Well aware of actual worldwide Environmental Crisis and present date world food drastic Scenario and the unethical quote that was addressed on the last G8 world summit 2008 and in order to solve energy crisis they decided to "Grow more CORN CROPS to convert it to ethanol FUEL"
Realizing that between now and 2020, 1.2 billion new rice consumers will be added in Asia.
Feeding these people will require the greatest effort in the history of agriculture: rice production must be increased by one third from today’s 320 million tons to 420 million tons (Average rice yield/acre is 6900 - 7200 Lbs)
I strongly believe that my initiative, would or could save guard more than millions hectares' of our fertile soil to only cultivate more crops, food also will save guard our environment from millions of tons CO2 that evolves from thousands and thousands clay bricks all around the globe no matter rich or poor countries, please check USA, Canada, UK, Africa, Asia, India …they all adapt to the same irreversible most threatening scary scenario of burning their land for more bricks.
That is why
“Knowledge is Solution, Culture are People”, believing that all World crisis are man-made catastrophic, and that one soon day will come that our culture will be unified and will lead us all to a better world.
My belief that All Mighty GOD created land to cultivate more food, to earn our daily bread as we all pray,
& not to burn it to fabricate clay bricks
No more converting food (Edible Corn) to ethanol.

Tell us about the person—the social innovator—behind this idea.

Maher Helmi's Innovation
(Professional Chemical Engineer/Industrial Advisor),
2005 to date:
Performed project research, for scientific and commercial feasibility and succeeded to produce the new exclusive light weight solid concrete, energy saving bricks, made of 85% burned rice husk "char"
Conducted up to date research, and following the steps of other pioneers latest technology such as densification & gasification new techniques.
Obtained all new necessary Governmental Officials approvals for necessary new walling material registration & patent rights duly granted.

Acquired on-hand personal expertise and produce tested new brick products formulation that complies with standard specification, and safety regulation.

Positive impacts started more than 2 years ago & I was able to teach & train much of the poor farmers, rice cultivators on how to fabricate the brick, Using my small hydraulic press & steel moulds, which was made available on site for them To build their new houses, almost free, especially that char is always available on-rice field, as burned leftover & for no value.
