Uganda Medicinal Plant Growers, Limited (UMPG) is a farming corporative that is formally registered in Uganda as a for-profit agribusiness entity. It is currently co-owned by 1380 indigenous farmers. These farmers have the capability of cultivating 400 tonnes of moringa seeds per anum. UMPG was established to help them attract the resources required for economic development. UMPG is based in the rural district of Masindi, Uganda.

Reason:
I am nominating this project because it has the potential to impact not only the 1380 farmers that comprise UMPG, but also the entire Masindi community because of the income generation aspect. Moreover, it is the first agri-development project in Uganda that has gone to create the entire ecosystem around their product lines. Furthermore, moving away from traditional aid, UMPG is a community-generated intervention that reflects the resilience and determination of local farmers to provide for their families. While still in the initial start-up phase, UMPG has built business partnerships with moringa oil and seed purchasers in Uganda, South Africa and the UK. Having accomplished this with little financial support, UMPG proves its potential.
