What change do you want to bring to the world?

What are the primary activities of your project?

The repository is already here with APPLE's iTune U, however the State of Michigan has launched MI Learning that host the 16 States' Clusters including the STEM cluster just waiting to be populated.

The primary activity is to continue the work already begun called the Workforce and Career Development section on MI Learning on iTune U, the only section of its kind on iTunes U. This request is to fund the STEM curriculum design called AFTERSHOCK.

AFTERSHOCK models the Southeastern Michigan community working with a large number education, industry, and government organizations to achieve STEM goals to better prepare middle and high schools students with mathematics and science in order to place in high tech jobs required by TARDEC and other engineering research, design and manufacturing in demand

The primary activity is to development STEM related content using podcasts, interactive PDF Portfolios, professional development for teachers supporting classroom deployment, and local robotic and science competitions.

We are requesting 30K of funding to create ten fully functional instructional unit plans with video media and interactive PDF Portfolios and use them to pilot the materials on MI Learning on iTunes U for in the classroom teacher led guided instruction as well as for those who are independent learners. With these results we will encourage TRADEC, the developer of the AFTERSHOCK trigger video to continue to support further development of instructional materials starting some time in 2012

What is innovative about your initiative? How is it a new contribution to the field?

The innovation comes in the form of creating a FREE repository of interactive STEM curriculum aligned to Common Core Standards as they become implemented nationally.

Mathematics is the first of STEM to be applied via the AFTERSHOCK model. The model is using the dramatics media clip that later is deconstructed to reveal the STEM content that is everywhere. These trigger segment engage students and bring to life actual story problems that become the foundation of each learning event.

The instructional design targets mobile learning. The materials will make use of portable audio and video, as well as the text, graphic, 3D modeling environments, and assessments activities that can be delivered in a PFD format.

These materials will be designed to be used in the classroom to support instructor led activities or for student to download them for self study.

What stage is your project in?

Operating for less than a year

Tell us about the community that you engage? eg. economic conditions, political structures, norms and values, demographic trends, history, and experience with engagement efforts.

The Workforce and Career Development section on MI Learning on iTune U is now going into it 3rd year. The Workforce & Career Development averages 60-70% of the over 196,000 downloads each month based on Apple's June 11.

These results are due to the popular collection are created by that instructor and were designed to be used in their own classroom as assigned student activities. Base on the work being done by TARDEC and the STEM Community Outreach Programming to attract young creative engineering students the project will development STEM related content. These materials will be hosted of MI Learning on iTunes U from the STEM Career Clusters Icon.

This last year was spent on the coordination of the broader community’s involvement and in kind contributions to the project in the form of time and expertise to validate academic content.

Share the story of the founder and what inspired the founder to start this project

TARDEC was doing field trips for middle and high school students to inspire them to acquire skills in robotic and STEM technologies. When TARDEC wanted to expand its three day field trip event to other schools outside of Macomb County. There was no money for buses, substitute teachers, fuel etc. to do anything. The whole outreach effort of TARDEC stopped other than attending robotic events with booth space, I am the developer of the Workforce and Career Development section on MI Learning on iTunes and felt there was a eLearning solution. Using the STEM Career Cluster location was a prime location to populate with quality STEM content.

Success will be tracked by the number of downloads for the AFTERSHOCK STEM collection on MI Learning on iTunes U. Further we will cross reference student achievement from both the data TARDEC collects and the public school records.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

Even the ARMY has lost the funding it has to support educational outreach.

Think about that! (the ARMY lost the funding to support education)

APPLE's iTunes data can show a greater interest. We will then go to other $upport for funding. To build on a good instructional design, repository for distribution, and support from teacher in the classroom via the STEM push.

How do you plan to strengthen your project in the next three years?

Once the effort of a curriculum collective on MI Learning on iTunes U to support STEM Common Core Standards begins. I would think critical mass would kick in. Large-scale expansion will demonstrate a substantial difference from other projects in the field. This will be design as a national STEM content repository. Even if AFTERSHOCK 10 lesson pilot is not funded. Rather all other STEM content and programs get posted to the MI Learning STEM icon will ease the "discoverability" of the materials.

If AFTERSHOCK is funded will encourage TARDEC to be more involved in the STEM content development and this entry point of 10 sample mathematics lessons is to move ahead with materials to be used in and out of classroom focus groups to improve on the STEM deliverables.

It is hard to imagine our Nation's congress contemplating default on the debt we've run up in the past 10 years. Especially after so many working Americans were forced into default on their homes with no choice but foreclosure.

That social funding forums like this have a community of educators and charity organizations working to find ways to fill the gap of innovation.

Innovation should be a practice built in to our doing. Instead we observer political opposition, & dead lock. Not the teaching moment.

In a way I am thankful for the opportunity to share the work I am doing and hope, while the effort called AFTERSHOCK is stalled due to the lack of funding, that I have the chance to share.
