Entry Form title
Saturday Science Academies for Success
What change do you want to bring to the world?
The love of math and science in every heart and the power of math and science in every mind.
An academically competent workforce with the math and science skills to meet the needs of industry.
Every young person with the math and science skills they need to pursue careers in math, science, technology and engineering.
What are the primary activities of your project?
Saturday Science Academy (SSA) is a half-day motivational program held at local schools designed to leave students with a “can do” attitude about math and science. The program exposes students to simple hands-on math and science activities and has the additional benefit of giving students a chance to interact with scientists, engineers, and other technicians in a familiar environment.
What is innovative about your initiative? How is it a new contribution to the field?
All SSA activities and projects are aligned with California State Standards.
SSA is a 3 hour hands-on science presentation led by Team Science guest presenters held a local school.
Students also receive handouts to reinforce key vocabulary and concepts.
What stage is your project in?
Operating for 1‐5 years
Tell us about the community that you engage? eg. economic conditions, political structures, norms and values, demographic trends, history, and experience with engagement efforts.
There is a persistent under-representation of women, minorities and economically challenged students graduating from our colleges and universities ready to participate, contribute, compete and lead. A statement prepared by the National Academy of Sciences in February of 2003, in support of MIT's amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court on the behalf of the University of Michigan stated, "In an age that will increasingly be driven by science and technology, we feel that it is critical that the leaders of science and engineering reflect the strength and diversity of America. Otherwise, our society is unlikely to accept and understand the many judgments that will depend on such expertise, and the scientific and engineering community will lose the contributions of many talented individuals. We need to be able to draw on a much larger talent pool to compete successfully in a global society and to expand the body of scientific and technical knowledge." TEAM Science is working to serve the children from all our communities.
Share the story of the founder and what inspired the founder to start this project
Marie Mungaray's passion stems from her belief that education, particularly education in mathematics, science, and technology, are critical skill areas for participating and attaining success in a knowledge economy. Team Science developed under her leadership, offers a myriad of interesting workshops for a diverse group of people. She has developed a strong working relationship targeting educational development with Cerritos Community College, The Cerritos College Foundation, the Boeing Aerospace Leadership Chapter, Project Tomorrow, and numerous school districts serving students in grades K-12. Other components of Team Science include: Educator Enrichment Day (EED) - EED offers teachers creative opportunities to access hands-on learning opportunities in mathematics, science, and technology. Each year, hundreds of teachers from diverse backgrounds learned together from technical professionals. They build skills, confidence, and acquire knowledge to share with students in classrooms throughout the state of California. The program continues to grow and attract the education community as well as other organizations interested in supporting knowledge and skill development in this area. A lack of funding ended this valuable program 5 years ago.
Summer Science Camp (SSC), another component of Team Science, serves over 200 K-12 students annually. Students work directly with technical professionals whose guidance and mentoring helps them in developing their cognitive structures in science through hands on experiences over 3 weekends each summer.

Please describe how your project has been successful and how that success is measured
Approximately 200 words left (1600 characters).
Our Alumni community is a strong and vibrant professional network. We consider our Alumni to be very important to our continued success as an organization. Many Alumni return as key volunteers, workshop instructors, advisory committee members, or simply remain friends and supporters of Team Science.
Our Alumni have gone on to pursue math, science, technology, engineering, law, and business degrees at prestigious universities such as M.I.T., Caltech, Stanford University, Harvard University, Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Pomona, Whittier College, and the United States Air Force Academy.
Aside from their history with Team Science and their educational success, our Alumni have began careers with successful positions in organizations such as the Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAG) in the United States Air Force, The Boeing Company, Northrop Grumman, NASA, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Company, Cisco Systems, and many others.
How many people have been impacted by your project?
1,001- 10,000
How many people could be impacted by your project in the next three years?
More than 10,000
How will your project evolve over the next three years?
Continue to expand to workshop and learning opportunities to match the needs of our nation and industry. For example, to add workshops on sustainable and renewable energy sources. Also to add offerings on financial management and accounting for science and technology related issues.
Sustainability
What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?
Approximately 200 words left (1600 characters) A lack and decrease of financial support and donations to be able to continue to deliver our phenomenal and inspiring programs has been the biggest obstacle.
To succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. This is especially true during the summer months. The Kids to Camp Fund was launched in January 2010 to sponsor students who otherwise would never have the opportunity to experience our innovative programs. It is our hope that with enough donations through the Kids to Camp Fund and to Team Science directly we will be able to continue offering our programs to the community.
Tell us about your partnerships
Approximately 200 words left (1600 characters)
Team Science has established partnerships with companies such as Boeing, Northrop Grumman, The Gas Company, and NuVision Federal Credit Union, who offer support through volunteers, in kind services and donations to Team Science.
Current annual budget of project, in US dollars
$50,001‐100,000
Explain your selections
Friends, family and individuals including parents of children who have participated in the programs, Foundations such as the Employee Community Fund of the Boeing Company, and local business who often donate goods (food & water) for the students during our programs.
How do you plan to strengthen your project in the next three years?
Continue to reach out to establish additional partnerships with businesses and individuals who share a passion for STEM education.
Partnerships and Accountability
Please tell us more about how your partnership was formed and how it functions. What specific role does each partner play? What unique resources does each partner bring to the initiative?
On February 6, an all day Team Science Retreat was held to address 3 key areas for 2010: Programs, Corporate Partners and our 20th Anniversary/Alumni Outreach. The retreat was attended by all our Board members and volunteers from Boeing, Northrop Grumman, The Gas Company and teacher and student volunteers. Expected outcomes for the 3 teams were established before the retreat and each team worked tirelessly together to accomplish the outcomes and set milestones to continue working the issues and reporting accomplishments over the next few months.
How are you building in accountability for students' successful STEM learning outcomes? Please provide a summary and examples.

Financial investment is needed to continue to offer the Saturday Science Academy Programs, marketing assistance is needed to reach new investors and student participants. Research for grants and funding sources are needed, pro-bono help with reviewing organizations papers (bylaws etc.) and booking/ accounting is needed. Finally innovative ideas for workshops and programs to attract students and maintain their interest in STEM.
Offers

We are a 1 part-time person nonprofit that relies entirely on volunteer time for all aspects of our operation. If I went down the list, we are a wonderful investment for anyone who is serious about truly impacting children before it is too late in their academic career; the young people who return year after year are so well prepared they will be visiting the Human Resources in the not to distant future and we have lots of rules so media does not waste their time covering our programs because there is nothing they consider "news worthy" to cover... Bottom line, our camp is celebrating 20 years on August 20 in spite of the lack of funds for hands-on math and science.
