The Latina Outreach Project offers Educational Workshops to Latina women in the NYC area. The goal of the workshops is to educate women about domestic violence issues and provide information about legal options so that women can make informed decisions. The project is available to women of any age, socio-economic status, immigration status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and religious background. The project aims to reach women who either are experiencing abuse in their relationships or who may know someone experiencing abuse.
Reason:
Latina victims face their own set of unique challenges. For a number of Latinas, immigration status is an ever-present concern and a source of great stress, often preventing women from seeking help from the law enforcement community, even when their safety is compromised. One study of undocumented immigrants found that for 64% of Latinas, a primary barrier to seeking help is the fear of deportation. It is our belief that by teaching women about their rights as a person and under the law, we can help prevent domestic violence and/or help stop it where it already exists.
