What makes your idea unique?

No other organization is dedicated to getting pets allowed in condos and other types of association-run housing. We have grown to be a 501-c3 organization, with a number of success stories and over 30,000 signatures on our petition to allow pets.

We don't have a patent and would welcome other organizations to do what we are doing.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

No

Impact

What impact have you had?

We list some of our success stories at http://www.petsincondos.org/Successes.htm. When we go out in the community I hear of other people who were helped by resources on our web page, but who have never contacted us.

Problem

People are devastated when an association board tells them that they have to remove their beloved pet, often with no reason other than pets are not allowed. One woman came to us because someone saw her at a dog park and reported her. No one knew she had a dog in her condo and she never walked it on condo property!

Actions

We have resources on our web page to help people save their pets and also to help them get rules changed in their communities. We also take phone calls and e-mail inquiries and make referrals to attorneyhs and fair housing agencies.

Results

We have helped hundreds of people.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

If we had more funds, obviously we could do more. We need funding, as does any non-profit organization, just to keep going. We would like to create a fund to help people get qualified legal assistance.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

We are going to prevail, because most people want pets. We just have to get the word out to enough people.

101‐1000

What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?

The Story

What was the defining moment that you led to this innovation?

My husband and I retired to Florida and had our own issues trying to keep our two rescued cats in our condo. When I went through the process the manager said, "Are you trying to help yourself or everyone?" I saw how extensive the problem was and yes, I decided to work on helping everyone, not just myself.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

I am a retired computer analyst. My main skills are computer skills, so I got this effort going by 1) creating an online petition, 2) developinng a web page to promote the petition, and 3) used web social networking to promote the cause.
