I was excited to see the successful use of a model that provides opportunities for everyday citizens who have no formal training, knowledge of, or ability to afford arts programming to engage actively in the affairs of their community. Our project Branching Out Through Tending, Love, and Care (Community Poetry Tree) has the same goals. Although our project is just starting, we have been excited by the response of 3 separate neighborhoods that are already working with us to start the first community poetry trees in York, PA. Your model provides a good example of how volunteers can be managed and structured. Our project is also a volunteer run project and we see our role as facilitators of workshops that then lead each community to develop its own set of rules, volunteer leaders, and activism. Your example of the immigrant women in your entry is a perfect example of how when safety is created for expression the sky is the limit to what can happen next if we support one another. I was interested to read your challenges as well with a volunteer run organization and any information that you can provide would be helpful. We are also interested in the idea of growing leaders within our community to further our project. We also have the challenge to document better what we do. This project grew out of the experiences of Yvette Hardy and I, art therapists at The Lehman Center, a program of Children's Aid Society. We are a very small organization with good people however have limited skills in media and have been without a marketer so we can relate to your struggles and belief that this area will need to be addressed by us. We are beginning to have greater impact by partnerships within the community. We truly believe our project needs to maintain its roots within the community it serves. Thank you for your entry and best wishes for continued success.
