McCreary Christian Center Medical Clinic and Food Pantry

The McCreary Christian Center was started in 1980. The services offered at the center were needed because of the high poverty rate in the county. McCreary County is one of the 20 poorest counties in the US. Funding for our clinic comes from donations from local business, churches, individuals, and small grants.
There are two outreach progrms, a free medical clinic and food pantry. Each are ran by dedicated volunteer staff.

What makes your idea unique?

Our free medical clinic is offered to individuals who are low income and have no medical insurance. These individuals receive medical care along with their medicines that we have available free of charge. The clinic is open on Wednesdays and operated by a physician, pharmacist, nurses, and office staff, all volunteering their time and talents.
Lab testing, emergency dental extractions and eye exams are offered by local healthcare providers at a reduced rate for the center.
We also assist clients in completing applications for indigent programs from drug companies to receive long-term medications free of charge.
Health education programs, such as diabetes instructions, are taught at the center. These classes are offered to anyone in the community free of charge.
Average patients per month 450.
Our food pantry is opened Monday through Thursday. A volunteer staff is available to distribute food to those who are nutritionally deprived. This program also gives help to those who find themselves in emergency situations.
As donations come into our food pantry they are unloaded by the volunteer staff. Food baskets are then prepared to be handed out as individuals come in. Whenever donated we also like to give out personal care items with the food baskets.
The food pantry provides food for more then 700 families each month.

Problem

The McCreary Christian Center relies on individual donations, donations from local businesses and churches, we continue to search for and apply for grants.
Without our programs a large amount of the population in McCreary County, KY would not have enough food to eat or the medical care they are in need of.
Without receiving donations and being awarded grants we have applied for the McCreary Christian Center could not continue.
Over the past couple of years there has been a decrease in commodities and food, food baskets are not as big as they used to be.
Studies have shown that a person that did not have breakfast does not focus well. Imagine then a person that did not have breakfast or dinner the night before. If the only meal a child gets is at school then they are not going to be worried about getting an education, as they are about where their next meal will come from. The Center giving out food to the community allows people that would not have been able to get food that their families needed without sacrificing something else they needed, such as gas or medications.
