Entry Form title
Green homes made out of PET and glass bottles
Describe your project
The care of the environment and the importance of access to housing as a prerequisite for the development people’s capacities and the impacts identified in various areas, in addition to adequate and sustainable housing are key concerns for the country's development. Finding housing solutions for people with limited resources, means to improve and enforce a constitutional right which is clearly not met, the bottle house is a sustainable option to the housing backlog.
What stage is your project in?
Operating for less than a year
What makes your project unique as it relates to the theme of this competition?
The problem lies, first, in that laws, housing policies, efforts and housing resources have been inadequate. On the other hand, environmental degradation and global warming have begun to wreak havoc on the dynamics of societies, so it is understood that the care of resources that make up what call the environment is an urgent priority. Besides pollution, lack of culture of recycling has resulted in collateral damage, which combined with the climatic disruption, impact on State decisions.
That is, the relationship between the housing backlog and solid waste management in Mexico, does not seem to have some link, however, by expanding criteria and innovative ideas they could be combined and formulated into comprehensive strategies that seek to alleviate both problems. The proposed house built with bottles of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and glass, is an alternative to improve the quality of life for millions of families in a situation of poverty, lessening the housing and environmental crisis in our country. Housing construction, arises from the need to rescue the planet, and especially the most vulnerable sector, seeking to decrease the incidence of poverty and marginalization.
Share the story of the founder and what inspired the founder to start this project
It was intolerable to see how precariously day to day Valeriano Méndez family survived. In the Barrio La Santísima in the City of San Pablo del Monte, Pedro and Isabel, along with their eight children, lived crammed in a small room of sheets of cardboard roof. During the cold winter blades pierced the weak cardboard, the same was true in warm seasons, when temperatures rose so unbearable inside. The minimum wage that Pedro received for help in selling clothes at the flea market has been one of the incomes of this family, older children left school to support their parents. Given this lewd scenario, solidarity and commitment of hundreds of people giving shows that when there is unity and determination, no obstacle can limit the human will and now bottle green home is a reality. However, this feat could not be just that, as more than 60 percent of the population live in poverty, with half or it living in extreme poverty.
Social Impact
This Entry is about (Issues)
Who or what (i.e. youth, women, environment, etc.) benefits from your project, and why is your project critical?
Entire families are benefited, because when it comes to people with asset poverty, housing is the primary means by which guarantees stability and family cohesion. Besides recycling supports the environment, ie, offer an alternative that addresses two issues: housing backwardness and environmental degradation.
Please describe how your project has been successful and how that success is measured.
We believe we have had positive results because half year after the first house built out of bottles in Mexico, we noticed the openness and support of public and private institutions also are professionalizing the technique to provide measurable and replicable standards of the method of construction, proportions, materials and impact on communities.
How many people have been impacted by your project?
Fewer than 100
How many people could be impacted by your project in the next three years?
1001‐10,000
What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?
The main barrier has been the society's and architects skepticism about the building resistance, we are receiving support from the Autonomous Metropolitan University for laboratory testing to determine the degree of viability of our proposal. Another obstacle has been lack of dissemination, however, we rely on the outcome of the research on the strength of materials, on which we will expand our distribution through agreements with media, public and private
How will your project evolve over the next three years?
The forecasts are encouraging, the initial laboratory tests have proved the bottles to be remarkably resistant, so we suspect that our proposal will be replicated exponentially.
Sustainability
For each selection, please explain the financial and non-financial support from each
By reducing costs by up to 70%, it promotes the use of recycled materials, replaces up to 80% on polluting and expensive material such as cement and clay and clotting elements that provide structural stability that is required. A tonne of PET bottles is valued at ± $ 3,500.00, each bottle costs less than ¢ 5; by filling the bottles with any type of soil, every bottle-wall reaches a maximum price of ¢ 30, which is well below the cost Brick Unit ($ 2.12) or a concrete block ($ 7.00).
The relevant mathematical calculations shows that the proposed technique is viable not only structurally speaking, but represents a choice that most people can access without difficulty, as the PET, if it collected on the public road is free. The soil filling is equally easy to collect, especially in rural areas.
Regional and National Government: They have programs that provide resources to develop projects like ours.
Customers: As an innovative technique, we already have a list of customers who want their home, thus a sustainable scenario is envisioned.
How do you plan to grow and/or diversify your base of support in the next three years?
We will invest in technology to streamline the filling of bottles, train personnel, develop a national awareness campaign in synergy with public and private institutions. Derived from the economic crisis, it is increasingly difficult for someone to access a home loan because the cost of a social house is between $ 276,000.00 and $ 536,00.00. Furthermore, this model can be adopted by public institutions, as they could build schools, medical or recreation centers we ought not to lose sight that is a technique that greatly reduces the cost of construction, because by encouraging community participation and beneficiary families, the workforce is replaced. The materials are affordable and do not represent a major problem to train more people to supervise the work. A house made of bottles as presented ranges from $ 70,000.00, which gives us confidence that more people will opt for our proposal. (Prices in Mexican pesos)

Liliam Flores examined the relationship between housing and population in poverty, with such research, she acknowledges some benefits of it:
"... It provides access to low-income families and reduces the price by half with the participation of labor, it promotes pride and satisfaction due to their direct involvement, increasing real household wealth with little impact on inflation, it helps to develop skills and encourages constructive interest in maintaining and expanding housing. It promotes self-building systems requiring a good capacity of organization and promotion. Some disadvantages of this system relate to the time it requires and the effort to maintain enthusiasm of participants in the building process, it develops construction skills in people who will not use them after but in their own homes, building times are longer, and generally the quality of housing is better. However, despite these criticisms, it will remain the main form of access to housing for the poor. Its prompting required to change the view of officials towards a more participatory policy and their role in the provision of services and strengthen the links between agencies, NGOs and the informal service sector and community groups.
