Innovation
What makes your idea unique?
SIF believes in Ghana and Africa as a huge opportunity in Agriculture, yet also, a significant under appreciation of that opportunity. The GREEN Project encourages and enable the women in the rural communities to work collectively on viable industrial sustainable models through mentorship from expertise in contributing their quota to grow our Economy.SIF is developing an innovative and dynamic approach. (Thus, Increasing women percentage (%) and productivity, employing modernised Agribusiness Models and Industrialization through Agriculture), with the involvement of women in capacity building. The GREEN Project is focused on making Ghana's Agric sector youth driven by equipping them with the requisite expertise to operate highly sustainable models of Agricultural projects throughout Ghana and replicated in Africa. The GREEN Projects will also develop human and intellectual capital and encourages innovation from the youth participants throughout the Projects phases. By group working, we will bring the women under one umbrella through effective networking and promote entrepreneurship development.

As the saying goes, every well built house starts with a definite plan. SIF has currently invested more in putting up structures that will spearhead the project. Much has gone into clearly defining the projects specific targets within specific time periods. SIF have been able to gain the partnership of the Institute of Sustainable Commodities (ISCOM- Netherlands) to believe in such a reform and has pledge their partnership. Likewise, SIF has been able to compromise with George Appiah Foundation of their Technological support and partnership for the success of the project. SPN has accepted a partnership to the project to focus more on getting event platforms available at specific time periods to market the project and enhance its visibility through exhibitions, fairs etc. With limited resources SIF have liaised with H&G Ghana Ltd, an affiliate of SIF to start a 20 acre farm at kyebi in the Eastern region of Ghana. This farm at kyebi indirectly forms part of the GREEN Projects pilot phase.
Problem: Describe the primary problem(s) that your innovation is addressing
The GREEN - Project is addressing the issue of the low percentage (%) of Youth in Ghana’s Agric Sector. Agriculture has been the backbone of Ghana’s economy with 40% contribution to GDP. Research proofs that 68 % of Ghana’s Population are located in the rural communities. Out of this populace, 62% of these people in the rural areas are actively engage in (Farming). Ghana’s Agricultural sector is made up of 80% of adult to 20% youth. All other things been equal, if the youth are not encouraged into agriculture, the transition/continuity of Labour to this vital sector of the Economy will be negative when the adults grow old and are unable to produce. Some causes to this Problem include; Rural- urban migration, High Interest in white colour Jobs and Manpower based farming. Farming in Ghana has primarily been manpower based e.g. where an acre of Land is cleared with a cutlass.
Actions: Describe the steps that you are taking to make your innovation a success. What might prevent that success?
The problem for this innovation was classified as a mindset problem. Farming in Ghana has primarily been manpower based. The Youth have this bad perception about farming. The problem is very complicated and needs to be addressed by the GREEN Project.SIF will (a) spearhead a pro-project sensitization campaign to crave the indulgence of the youth in this economic reform. (b)Set up a Project framework and administrative Structure (c) Create database and Network for youth in Agribusiness to facilitate dialogue (d) establish a platform and enforce training in modernized Agricultural Practices for the Youth participants (e) establish commercial farms by Youth Entrepreneurs and participants in a newly created competitive atmosphere to encourage innovation (f) Match results against targets periodically on the field and liaise with local/international Organisations.
Results: Describe the expected results of these actions over the next three years. Please address each year separately, if possible
Year 1:
The Green Reform Enterprise Evolution Network -Project will be having commercial farms built out of the Project that will be a model for knowledge expansion and replicative study by stakeholders.A framework and a structure for the Project will be created for the public to get the big picture about the development impact of the GREEN Project .A common platform will be created to access the database of youth in Agribusiness. Young Farmers will adjust themselves to practice modernized farming methods due to the training gained from the expertise after the pre-project sensitization campaign.
Success in Year 2:
Using the commercial farms and expertise gained from the training to increase productivity and Youth percentage in Agribusiness; that will be used as the bases to embark on a research for the Green industrialization part of the project. Group works will be encouraged for collective participation and masterminds will come up with innovative alternative uses to farm produce. At this stage , the project will be more focused on research on what other uses crop yields can be effectively be put to .This has been designed to encourage innovation and promote youth entrepreneurship
Success in Year 3:
Findings derived from the Research stage will be the model to set up industries from their innovations with insight gained from other Diaspora countries. SIF will integrate Green Entreprise development at this stage. At this point , increasing crop production will not only be the major objective but to what other uses crops can be processed or manufactured into, either for medicinal products or supplements, etc. The youth will work on initiatives that can promote a sustainable economy and industrial development in Agriculture. Visibility will be used to trigger replication in Africa.

Please tell us more about how partnerships could be critical to the success of your innovation
Because SIF is developing a highly innovative and synergic approach, it decided to achieve its project objective by clearly defining the requisite expertise needed at each stage of the project idea to ensure its success. The approach is to leverage with the resources available in building a strategic partnership that will form the core foundation of the projects implementation. Our partnership with the Institute of Sustainable Commodities -(ISCOM Netherlands ) will provide the technical expertise requisite in Agribusiness for the youth participants whiles SIF takes up training in Green Social Enterprise models(Industries) that can be drawn out of the GREEN Project. George Appiah Foundation is our technological partners. We work with them to ensure a database is set up with structures that promote entrepreneurship and visibility.SPN provides event platforms that seek to market the project.

The Story
What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?
Been passionate about developing human and intellectual capital, our dream was to help my fellow colleagues who slept on the streets of Accra. We took it as a challenge to convert more unskilled Africans into a useful asset for economic Change. That passion led us embark on a Research. Ghana has enormous untapped opportunities and growth potentials. Our failure to exploit these areas has daunted our growth rates. Research proofed that Ghana’s Agricultural sector is made up of 80% of adult to 20% youth. All other things been equal, if the youth are not encouraged into agriculture, the transition/continuity of Labour to this vital sector of the Economy will be negative when the adult grow old and are unable to produce. This has affected our monetary and fiscal policies, interest rates and the economy at large. It was quite clear, that the medium term priority areas pursued by the various governments have not been efficient enough. With great passion for Global development, SIF decided to find antidotes to support both Government and other efforts in economic matters. We found out that some causes to these menace includes: Under - utilization of resources, Ignorance resulting from (low level of education and lack of facilities for development of human and intellectual capital), Land Litigation, Inadequate ICT, technical and vocational training and Centralized development. The GREEN Project which is 20% phase of the SCI Project was then designed to curb this menace.
Tell us about the person—the social innovator—behind this idea.
John Ghansah started a mastermind Group(SPN) in Ghana to encourage innovation among his colleagues which has led to the birth of SIF.I see the “teach me how to fish” method of disseminating information as key in countries such as Ghana where resources are often limited. John is the initiator and key driver of the vision of SIF and its entire Network of Youth Entrepreneurs and leaders. My synonymous with innovation has led to the development of projects that promote economic development. One of John's Innovative ideas won him the Sukuma Afrika and UNMC Youth Entrepreneurship Award in 2008. John has answered the call to Champion Youth Social Entrepreneurship in Africa by spearheading the Lanch of Africa's Young Social Entrepreneurs Network (AYSEN). John is highly optimistic and an ultimate realist. He is result Oriented and purpose driven. With limited resources, John has been able to make himself more relevant to his people. He has a passion, strong ethical values and a sense of community development in Africa and has participated in different forums that seek to alleviate poverty and unemployment. As a dynamic youngster and a problem solver, His inspiration lies in helping others to succeed. John has given students and community members an opportunity to grow and to make a difference in the environment in which they live. His expertise and mentorship has empowered the some youth to far -reaching results.
