From the moment I met Busayo online to the moment I embraced her in person, she has blown me away by her intense passion and determination to end gender violence and to create a safe space for women in Nigeria to seek refuge, create friendships and empower themselves through educational opportunities. There are currently no safe havens like this in her region of Nigeria and women are left feeling alone with no safe access to technology training or even a venue to share their dreams and struggles with fellow women.
Busayo herself started this journey of empowerment through technology not long ago. It was sheer will and determination to teach herself to use a computer, access the Internet and harness the power of web 2.0 - where she secured citizen journalism training, a mentorship via Skype with a woman in the US and a full scholarship to the Empowerment Institute in New York. This knowledge in technology and empowerment, along with her background in counseling victims of abuse and violence - Busayo is ready to sustainably lift up the women of her community by creating a safe space for them to access the tools and relationships they need to rise up.
Now she just needs the support to go forth with this innovative idea that will cause such ripple effects throughout her community, Nigeria and world - we will be one mighty step closer to closing the gender inequality gap.
I admire this idea as the greatest untapped economic asset we have right now, lies in the potential of women and girls worldwide. Women have so few platforms for their voices and few safe spaces to gather where they can share ideas, resources and support each other for real action and results. With ideas such as Busayo's, we can help our current and future grassroots community leaders stay informed, connect them with leaders in different development fields, solve today’s global problems and build a sustainable future. Best wishes with this project, Busayo.
Busayo, I believe in your idea and I hope that people will read and understand how important is for you to win this competition. I learned a lot from you and I am pretty sure that everything you are doing is for the benefit for the women in your community. I pray for you idea and WOMEN INSPIRATION CENTER that one day I am going to visit!!!
This certainly is a wonderful idea, and the fact that Busayo is taking the lead makes it even more special. She has been an inspiration to all of us, who have been a part of Voices of Our Future Correspondents Program. Women in every community need space, and especially in countries like Nigeria. It is an important step that Busayo is taking to build that space, and it is pertinent that we support her idea, and help her vision turn into reality. Wish you all the best Busayo:)
You are finally working on your dream. This initiative of yours will help more women to dream while some will see theirs getting true in your centre. Keep going .
As a woman living in Nigeria, I agree that at times, going to browse or surf the web at a cybercafe could be risky because many of the cafes are infested with fraudsters. I have had to postpone web appontments on a number of ocassions for this reason. i therefore believe that busayo's initiative is very important.
