The solar box cookers developed by the Solar Women uses only energy from the sun to cook food. This is a simple, appropriate technology for rural Nicaragua that brings cooking outside of the home, eliminating air contaminants that can be harmful to health. On a sunny day the cookers can achieve temperatures as high as any gas fired oven, eliminating the need for any external fuel source.

Reason:
The Solar women are a unique group of people living, and working in Totogalpa, in the Northwest Republic of Nicaragua. The women (and a few men) are native to Nicaragua and strive to promote the research and development of renewable energy projects in the region. Deforestation is a major problem in the region that these women live, and the majority of their cooking is done by wood fires in the homes. This is a serious health issue because insufficient ventilation causes living conditions to deteriorate. The women's Solar cooker not only eliminates the need for wood (a precious commodity) but also takes the noxious fumes out of the home significantly improving indoor air quality. These women saw a problem and devised a simple solution.
