Herman Melville once wrote, “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow-men; and along those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.” Life is too short to wait to make it a better place. There are people who suffer on a daily basis around the world and what is our role in life if not to help our fellow-man?
I feel a strong connection with Vermont because I grew up here and although I have traveled a bit, I know it is my only home. It is not just about the physical beauty of our rural landscape, there is a progressive mentality among many Vermonters that we live in a place that is suited for piloting positive change.
I want young people in my community to feel that they belong. I want them to grow up proud of where they are from and to have them want to give back to their homes when they are capable of doing so. I want the elders of our community to feel safe and loved. I want every person in Vermont to have enough to eat every day.
As Administrator of Wonder & Wisdom, I keep the books and write grants to help support our local enrichment programs for children and seniors. I am a basketball coach for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade boys and girls in our community. I am on the School Board, the Wonder & Wisdom Board, the Greensboro Association Board (Chair: Grants Committee), and I have organized a Women's Outdoor Soccer team for our local towns. I think there is great value in communities working together to support their families.
