Russia in the years 1988--94. During this time I lived in Moscow for considerable periods of time. It was a difficult time for Russians but they received me warmly. I realized that what the American government had been saying about the Russians was a pack of lies. I became committed to working for peace and friendship.

SUMMARY OF WORK EXPERIENCE IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION John Martin September 1, 2008 to present Consultant to UNESCO Working with the UNESCO International Research and Training Center for Rural Education to develop a new education program for children in the primary grades in China. Project is designed for three years and includes curriculum development and implementation in four regions of China. Formulate and coordinate the work of an Expert Group to develop this program. Write fund-raising proposals and seek funding from a variety of sources. Also spent the two previous years in China teaching English at two universities—Northwest A & F University and Zhejiang University. February, 2005 to May, 2005 International Consultant on literacy education in Afghanistan Researched various reading and language comprehension assessments in the United States preparatory to going to Afghanistan. Met with various American experts and visited schools and language programs. Working with Relief International, trained staff in the use of language assessment materials, Working with teachers and staff, developed pilot assessment in Dari language, conducted assessments in two schools in Kabul for all grades, one-twelve. Analyzed results and gave seminar to teachers. Reviewed material submitted by teachers and developed one version of reading assessment for each grade one-twelve. Sent material to RI staff in Kabul for translation into local languages and implementation. January 2004 to November, 2004 International Consultant on School Health Education--Fulbright Scholar in India Engaged in the development and implementation of a pilot program to create a new, comprehensive school health education program for the primary grades in India. Worked with NGOs, New Delhi state government and Indian research and teacher training centers on pilot project in 26 schools in New Delhi. Goal was to develop an indigenous Indian program for implementation in 2005-06 school year. Particular interest of the program is on children with disabilities and who are in vulnerable and disadvantaged circumstances. Hired and supervised staff in the development and implementation of the program. Secured financial support from Indian sources. Work in India undertaken as Fulbright Scholar. Result was a program that is still in use in New Delhi and is available for use without charge in any school in India through Udayan Care, an NGO that works with orphaned children. September 1994 to January 2000 International Consultant on Health Education, Disability Education and University Professor in Belarus. June 1997 to December 1999. Consultant to the Ministry of Science and Education in Belarus on educational programs for the integration of children with disabilities into the regular school system of Belarus. Wrote and secured grant from American foundation, advised ministry and school officials on programs. Organized and conducted visit of five person Belarusian delegation to the United States for two weeks to examine American methods of educating children with disabilities. September 1995 to June 1996. Consultant in Belarus for the Soros Foundation on the implementation and evaluation of health and other educational programs. Developed comprehensive national plan of health education for Belarus, hired and trained three person staff to implement plan, implemented program with operating budget of $150,000 per year. Trained teachers and implemented school-based health education curriculum for the middle grades in Belarus. Advised education program staff of Belarusian Soros Foundation on a variety of educational programs. Taught English and health education in schools and universities. September 1994 to August 1995. Fulbright Scholar in Belarus. Lectured as visiting professor at three universities. Helped to create first department of health education at Belarusian State Pedagogical University, developing course outlines, teaching courses and training professors in this process. Conducted research on health education in Belarusian schools. Organized first ever national conference on health education in Belarus. Taught English as a Second Language and American Literature in pedagogical university and linguistic university. September 1988 to September 1994--Consultant and Visiting Professor in Russia. Initiated contacts with Russian health and education professionals. Researched American school health education programs and selected program best suited for implementation in Russia. Reached agreement with American developers of program and Russian Ministry of Education on joint project to implement the program in Russian schools. Assisted in the initial implementation of the program in the first grade in 16 schools in Moscow and in its on-going development. This program was implemented in more than 3,000 schools in 55 cities throughout Russia. Taught English and health education at the Moscow State Pedagogical University for one academic year to some 120 students. Lived alternatively in USA and Moscow over this period of time, with approximately two years spent in Moscow.
