I got involved with volunteer work very late, only after leaving undergrad. But it was love at first sight after that. Having grown up in Brazil and travelling to Bolivia to visit family, social inequalities were a constant. It was only when I met people who were engaged in social change that I realized I could be part of it. Ashoka´s program with Social Entrepreneurs was the biggest driver for me, it made me realize I could use my professional skills to complement people´s experiences.
My family had always been involved in social work in the local community, both in Brazil and Bolivia and my siblings and I were always encouraged to join. But this was focused on a small community, a very specific problem. Being able to tackle important issues such as availability of food and preservation of the environment was a major turn on for me. Travelling to mountains and sailing also made me conscious of the need to preserve the planet.
