In the area of London there are many dance groups that operate out of a variety of venues. We found that there were very few that really had the interests of the community in mind and had a vision that extended past the day to day dance class.
The Urban Street Dance Krew formed from a dream to eliminate negative stereotypes and instead generate new and positve role models. The desire to launch a project such as this was enhanced as the need for extra curricular activities evidently grew within the community.
As children and adults alike became less and less active there was a huge decline in individuals taking part in sports and people were becoming more and more motivated by modern day television, computer games which evidently leads to an unhealthy life style which breeds low self esteem and lack of confidence.
My husband and I were personally affected by the groups of youths who felt they had nowhere else to go but hang around in large groups on the streets, smoke, drink, shout and swear, leaving members of the public feeling intimidated and threatened.
We wanted to make sure that the these groups of individuals had some other way to keep occupied and give them an opportunity to restore their reputation.
It needed to be one that would not be deemed uncool by their peers, whilst providing them with an activity that would not only enhance their confidence and ability to express themselves but provide them with an exciting way to improve and maintain fitness. In turn we would focus on community based activities in order to reverse the negative impression sometimes associated with young people and demonstrate that everyone no matter what age, gender, race, sexuality, physical body type or religion can enjoy dance and music.
The Urban Krew formed in January 2007 and has in a short period of time has attracted over 450 individuals to its classes aging from as young as 4 years right through to adults (oldest at present is 46yrs).
We meet several times throughout the week and choreograph routines and dances for the purpose of performing them at local & community based events as well as at fundraisers and corporate events.
Since our launch The Urban Krew provide afterschool activities in over 18 schools and have taken part in numerous fundraising events, and have been commended by Local MP's, Mayors and celebritites for their contribution.
The Urban Krew also provide a safe and secure environment for working parents to enroll their children during the school holidays. This is called 'dance camp' and we invite several CRB checked instructors, choreographers and DJ's to run a variety of workshops in a variety of dance styles including, street, hip hop, breakdance, popping, locking, combat, latin, tap and cheerleading. The DJ's also work with the children demonstrating how they would edit music and compile their own music tracks.
The Urban Krew also provides professional medal tests where members can take part in a grading which goes towards them building a creative CV with RSA/NVQ qualifications awared by the United Kingdom Alliance.
What makes us a changemaker is the fact that we are making a difference in so many lives, are rapidly expanding within the community and are already recognised by so many people and schools in the area (aprox 8 in 10 people).
We believe that we have started a project where families and individuals are confident that discipline and routine will be implemented, mutual respect will be expected and contribution has begun generating improved quality of life and confidence.
At our dance studio, as thats where all the magic happens. Our class venue is a place that provides all those that attend a safe, energetic and positive environment where they are free to contribute, express and vent emotions positively. Its a home away from home which is welcoming, disciplined and supportive.
We believe we are a company who has taken the positive art form of dance and used it to enrich people's live, bring people and communities together and offer career opportunities to our students.
The Urban Krew, is more than just a dance group, it is an extended family where you dont even have to take part to be involved.
We want this to continue and hopefully provide our members with a permanent headquarters which they can call their own, possibly help rennovate so that we can continue doing what we are doing and making a difference in a variety of ways.
We would love for our members to feel that their hardwork and dedication is recognised and life can be fulfilling and worthwhile if their is passion, focus and determination.
We want to bring people together and feel proud!
