A passionately worded argument against old-fashioned gym uniforms I wrote for the middle school paper; an expose about unsanitary cafeteria conditions in the high school weekly; an investigation into university research on animals in my college daily. Yeah, I guess you could say I’ve been a little obsessed with challenging the staus quo since I was a kid. And I always wanted to be a journalist.
I learned quickly it's a powerful way to make change happen. Those dresses (no kidding, dresses!) we had to wear to gym? Replaced with shorts and t-shirts. Those dirty floors in the lunch room? State regulators came in and ordered them cleaned. The animals in the labs? Protected after a USDA inquiry.
All grown up now and having reported for 20 years on human rights, conflict and social problems around the world, I’ve found that focusing on the solutions is the most inspiring way to invite people to explore the possibilities for a better future.
Changemakers is where those stories are happening every day and I’m thrilled to be a part of spreading the word about the exciting things happening in this amazing community.
