At my core, I think it's my desire to bring people together to create social change. People who live in different geographic areas, who possess conflicting viewpoints, and who might not seem to have anything in common from the outset. I want to encourage them to talk to--not past--each other. To learn from one another and collaborate.
Throughout college, I worked to improve race relations on campus by coordinating and leading retreats focused on race, gender, and sexuality. What I found is that when given the space, people were eager to share their stories and break down persisting stereotypes.
It's hard to choose just one. I grew up in New York, so I think I'll always be a city girl at heart. But I will never forget my first trip outside the U.S to the French countryside. I was thirteen and spent a summer in Provence--in the south of France--with my family. The sprawling sunflower and lavender fields were incredible.
I want to live in a world where every person, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, and socioeconomic status, is empowered to speak out and spark change.
