Darell Hamond believes that play should be considered a right for children as opposed to a luxury and founded KaBOOM! in 1996 to address what he identified as a “play deficit” in America. The idea behind KaBOOM! was to provide safe environments for children to play, where they can develop motor, creative and social skills. KaBOOM! has enjoyed great success since its foundation having built 2,080 playgrounds in communities across North America. Local communities are involved in the planning and building phases of all playgrounds which leads to a great sense of ownership and an increased feeling of community among the children and the families who benefit from these facilities.
