H. Carrie Chen, MD, MSEd is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical School, where she holds the Abraham Rudolph Endowed Chair in Pediatric Education. She directs the longitudinal two year doctoring skills course, Foundations of Patient Care as well as the Health Professions Education Pathways to Discovery Program which prepares health professionals for careers in education. She is Co-Investigator on a grant from the National Institutes of Health to improve the teaching of Social and Behavioral Sciences across the four years of medical school. In addition, she is engaged in pediatric residency training as the faculty chair of the Residency Curriculum Committee. She sees patients and supervises medical students and pediatric, emergency medicine, and psychiatry residents in the Pediatric Urgent Care clinic at UCSF.
The focus of Dr. Chen’s work is on medical student education and she has done faculty development with teachers of medical students in Serbia and in Taiwan. She is a member of several professional pediatric and medical education associations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics where she helps to implement Continuing Medical Education programs for practicing pediatricians in Northern California.
She grew up in Los Angeles County and has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for years. She received her Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from UC Berkeley, MD degree from UCSF, and Master of Science degree in Education from the University of Southern California. Her passion is in mentoring young learners and she has worked over the years with middle school, high school, and college students in addition to medical students and residents.
