Changing the perception of contemporary native youth.
Kingcome Inlet, or Gwa'yi in Kwakwala. It is situated on the northwest coast of British Colombia. A remote village of around 100 people, all of whom are members of my family. I was 8 years old the first time I went there. It was overwhelming, and confusing but exciting at the same time, because it was a whole new world that I was apart of, it was my home. I met extended family members and it started shaping my identity as a First Nations person. Ever since it has been a place that is very important to me, a place that holds my heritage and history.
I want aboriginal youth to be proud of their identity and I want us to hold onto our heritage and our histories but build it into our modern identities as well so that we might survive in the 21st century.
I have worked with APTN National News in both Yellowknife and Montreal, telling Aboriginal stories for a national audience. Also spent two seasons working with the CTV News program 'First Story' as a producer and researcher exploring Aboriginal topics and characters in British Columbia.
