I teach. In order to catalyze change in society or worldwide, I believe we need to begin by putting the education of our children as an item of the highest priority. It is said that you can feed many by giving them food, but you can feed exponentially more by teaching them to grow their own. Revolutionary change in how we approach education will be necessary to move from where we are to where we could be. While I feel alive in current classroom settings, the need to re-invent education from the ground up, for our students' current needs in our information and services oriented society has become increasingly evident.
Anywhere in nature. The Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. The Adirondack and Catskill Mountains of New York. Canoeing the Delaware River. Hiking the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania and New York.
Holistic, integrated, sustainable education for all, worldwide. International collaboration and cooperation on project- and problem-based educational units, grounded in and catalyzed through current and emerging technologies and real-world issues and problems.
I began my career path as an architecture student, but found it too competitive. I then completed a bachelors degree in art education, and earned certification in two states. My ideals and the narrowness of the field have kept me from a full-time art teaching position, but this has provided me with a broad range of experience at the middle and high school levels as a substitute teacher of ALL subjects. I have become convinced that teaching students by fragmenting and oversimplifying to teach fragments of knowledge, often to attain higher standardized test scores, is an extreme disservice to our young people. I have come to believe a revolution in education must be catalyzed, in which we begin teaching whole human beings using real-world issues and problems, in an authentic, holistic, integrated manner.
I am currently dually enrolled at Jones International University in both Instructional Technology and Secondary Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Masters' programs. I hope to complete a Ph.D. in some form of change management program in the future.
