Goals
Train additional educators, across disciplines, in the schools where we already have programming to build capacity.
Engage teachers school-wide in full-day, half-day or hour-long professional development in Dance 4 Peace pedagogy.
Involve families in the communities where we work through workshops and invited classroom observations.
In the U.S., the experience of violence as a young person is nearly ubiquitous; the American Academy of Pediatrics estimates 97% of suburban and urban middle-schoolers have either known a victim, witnessed an event, or been a victim of violence. Globally, while violence takes many forms, its presence evinces the need for empathy education. There is a need for methodology that transforms classroom learning into a dynamic and global process.
Move This World (MTW) is a global nonprofit that uses creative movement as a vehicle to transform conflict, violence and bullying in communities. MTW focuses on empowering individuals with the necessary skills to identify emotions within themselves, be empathetic in their interactions with others, and act as change agents in their communities. Our hallmark program is an evidence-based curriculum that engages students Pre-K-12, teachers and families in movement-based activities that promote empathy, mediation skills, diversity appreciation and conflict transformation. To date, MTW has worked with over 9,000 individuals across 22 cities on 4 continents. Our vision is to change the way we teach and learn, with movement and empathy at its core.
MTW’s signature program is an evidence-based, sequential curriculum that uses movement as a vehicle for social and emotional learning. The activities empower individuals to establish diverse dialogue; value differences; behave empathetically; understand and manage anger; and showcase conflict prevention and resolution techniques through creative movement. MTW ensures standards-based approaches at every level from pre-kindergarten through high school. Curricula are tailored to the cultures and languages of local sites, tackle specific issues facing each community, and engage parents, teachers, and the broader community ecosystem. Each semester of the curriculum consists of 10 sessions, designed to be implemented once a week for one hour.
