What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?
We will deliver original online video programming -- live and recorded -- that focuses on social, political, economic and health issues affecting people of African descent via the computer and mobile phone. emPower’s will not only discuss social issues, but also promote volunteerism and activism.
Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?

What will be the impact of your idea?
Content will include: live commentary, news, investigative stories, educational reality shows, political debates, documentaries, historical content and children’s shows. One show, emPower hour, will have a "live studio audience" where viewers can tune in via mobile phone or computer and ask questions or make comments in real-time either by video or text to the show panel or host. After all shows, viewers can have a text or email sent if they want to learn more about the topic, volunteer, sign a petition, join a cause, participate in an event or how to receive help. All programming will allow viewers to interact, comment and share with each other in real-time with friends privately or openly for all to see through a continuous scroll. Viewers will have the option to download all shows or share with others. The goal is to encourage minorities to invest in their communities. emPower hopes to produce future community leaders, provide current organizers the tools to continue their work, give every day people the power to lend even the smallest hand in grassroots efforts and offer struggling individuals strategies to improve their quality of life. All content will be free.
Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?
I have a background in journalism -- print and online -- which has spanned nearly a decade. I am active in issues affecting people of color as a volunteer, including as a former full-time AmeriCorps VISTA. In addition, nearly two years ago, I started an online magazine (www.emPowernewsmag.com) with the same mission, which I started with $5,000 in savings. I manage the day-to-day operations of the site including overseeing volunteer contributors/interns, upload content on the magazine, blog and social networking sites, research current events -- all while working a full-time job as a magazine editor for an association. I have connected with a number of filmmakers, broadcast journalists and videographers who are eager to become a part of the new video venture. In addition, many of the online magazine’s contributors will also assist with video content. I also plan to connect with non profit organizations, black philosopher, educators and other professionals who use their talents on issues affecting people of African descent. emPower has the ability to reach and interact with minorities no matter where they are, whether on a mobile phone or while sitting in a coffee shop.
How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)
I estimate that the launch will cost about $300,000. I am currently looking into additional funding and grants. Although content will be free, revenue will come from two ways: 1) advertising/sponsorship and 2) membership. Viewers will have the option of becoming members or "emPower partners." For $9.99 a year, partners will get premium services such as discounts or free admission into emPower (future) events, free monthly webinars, donor/business listing, unlimited downloads and more. Ten percent of their membership will go to an emPower approved non-profit organization of their choice.
