Good Germs, Bad Germs
“Good Germs, Bad Germs,” presents evidence of federal and state regulators seeking to limit our right to choose the kinds of nourishing, healthy, living foods we can put into our bodies. These ”regulators” believe that all fresh foods must be pasteurized or irradiated in order to make them “safe.”

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?
“Good Germs, Bad Germs,” presents evidence of federal and state regulators seeking to limit our right to choose the kinds of nourishing, healthy, living foods we can put into our bodies. These ”regulators” believe that all fresh foods must be pasteurized or irradiated in order to make them “safe.”

What will be the impact of your idea?
Through a national television broadcast, a carefully planned and executed national outreach campaign, we anticipate that GOOD GERMS, BAD GERMS will foster what will become a continuing dialogue between government officials from Homeland Security, the Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration, the California Department of Food and Agriculture, state and federal legislators and dairy producers (both conventional and raw), consumers (in particular mothers), and the general public on these issues:
1) What is the role of the state and federal government in deciding what is healthy and what is harmful to eat?
2) What rights and responsibilities do parents have in deciding what is healthy and what is harmful for them and their children to eat?
3) What are living foods?
4) How do processed foods, including pasteurized milk, affect bacteria living in and on the human body?
5) What do the latest scientific studies show about the role bacteria plays in protecting and maintaining healthy immune systems?
6) How can "regulators" and dairy farmers work together to benefit consumer interests?
Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?
Project director, film producer, director and co-writer Jed Riffe, is best known as the producer and director of “Ishi, the Last Yahi,” "Waiting to Inhale," and the "California and the American Dream" series.
Producer and co-writer Christine Chessen is a mother of three with an MBA from Columbia and a certified nutrition educator. In 2008, Ms. Chessen was instrumental in securing bi-partisan passage of SB 201, a bill to regulate raw milk in the California legislature.
Steve Heilig will help frame the subject of the film from a medical ethicist's perspective. "…I do, however, see [“Good Germs Bad Germs”] as a good 'case study' regarding the grey area overlapping of science, public health, consumer values, and… the complex and troubling role of financial conflicts of interest.”
Food writer Anne Mendelson explains her role as a culinary historian. "The main strength I can bring to “Good Germs, Bad Germs” is that I am neither an advocate nor an adversary of the raw milk cause. I am a food historian… struck by the pro-and-con passions that raw milk has been arousing for more than a century
How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)
We have raised $79,000 in cash, in kind, and foundation grants. We have shot key scenes with our principal characters and have edited a 24 minute work sample. We anticipate that it will take $250,000 to complete the film and initiate a national audience engagement campaign.
