International Video PenPal (IVP) Program

International Video PenPals (IVP) links kids from low-income/high-income schools in the U.S. to kids in developing countries. Through the process of sharing, kids see and hear what life is like in their penpal’s world. Children share video messages showing their families, communities, and lives in a deeper level than before.

International Video PenPal (IVP) Program

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

International Video PenPals (IVP) links kids from low-income/high-income schools in the U.S. to kids in developing countries. Through the process of sharing, kids see and hear what life is like in their penpal’s world. Children share video messages showing their families, communities, and lives in a deeper level than before.

What will be the impact of your idea?

First, it increases the foreign language skills of the students participating on both sides (unless it is an English-speaking country with whom the US kids are writing and video-logging). Secondly, it teaches technology skills and the students learn how to make a very short video documentary. Third, through the use of both letters and video with sights and sounds, it exposes the students to new worlds and widens their global perspective. They learn the similarities that exist between people everywhere, and they begin to break down international and intercultural barriers. It exposes them to life in other forms and redefines words like poverty and wealth in new contexts on both sides. Students actually tend to perform better academically. Fourth, it teaches them to be less self-focused and more others-focused as they learn to be more responsible and consider others through the power of service and fundraising materials for their IVPs. Lastly, it raises up a generation of leader-raising, peacemaking, tolerant, serving individuals who will have an even better understanding of others in our world from a much earlier age.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

We already have implemented the conventional, non-video technology version of the international penpal program at YES Preparatory public charter schools in Houston, TX. YES is a Title I school and most children are from low-income communities and on free or reduced lunch. So we have a 3-year track record with the conventional approach. The children also raised funds for international service projects and ended the year with one month of international summer service with their IVPs in person. Teachers previously involved are willing to help with the renewed initiative. Additionally, Sarah Wilkinson, friend and founder of PeacePal, will be an advisor and help develop the idea. We have a public school in New Orleans and a KIPP school in New York interested in participating in the program as well as our Houston schools.
As co-founder of the original program inside YES schools, I'm well-suited to make this happen and will find a way to accomplish this with the Changemakers grant or through other grant programs. Additionally, we have 3 years of fundraising experience for the previous programs.
