What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

Giving Voice to the voiceless: Through debates and presentations, the Community Radio facilitates citizens’ participation, good governance, and enables them to demand accountability and transparency in service delivery.

What will be the impact of your idea?

By training men and women to use radio equipment, gather and process information for broadcasting, the community radio demystify radio technology and make the participants self confident and to know that they are as good as specialists trained in conventional media institutions.
This will enhance the idea of development communication enshrined in community design programming

Communities get to understand that they are part of the global citizenry that is the cause and solution to environmental challenges like global warming and climate change with concomitant effects of livestock and animal husbandry.

Collective power: An enlightened citizenry that holds leaders accountable and effectively participates in planning, monitoring and evaluation of programs for effective service delivery.

Political literacy: the community members know for what, whom, how and when to vote. It is envisaged that there will be a progressive shift in voting patterns where electorates will base their choice on programs, aspirations, and values other than voting based on traditional sectarian prejudices.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

KKCR is a jointly founded project between URDT and the communities. It evolved through a Community Action Planning process. Therefore the idea is owned by the community as protagonists in programming and their involvement. The author facilitates the process.

As a Non- Profit Media house, KKC Radio as a station strongly believes that access to and participation in information generation are key principles for the media to inspire a better world.

Access implies the availability of broadcasting services to all community members within its locality; and participation implies that the public is actively involved in planning and management and also provides producers and performers.

The radio provides opportunity for Continuous interaction between producers and the receivers (protagonists), open to members of the community, as individuals/groups to produce programs they want rather than having them prescribed by the station. The radio technical staff’s role is to guide and regulate presentation.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

The East African Community Media Project was conceived as a collaboration among the three NGOs in the region involved in environmental issues and advocacy for the rights of the indigenous people. The founders are Martin Saningo of Orklonerei Radio Service, Arusha, Mwalimu Musheshe of KKCR, Uganda and Ms. Wagaki Mwangi of EcoNews Africa. There has been wide consultation with the communities. Each station is accountable to its community.

Although each station raises its own money for running costs while cross cutting issues like capacity building; the tripartite writes joint proposals for funding. Therefore, at Kagadi Kibaale Community Radio (KKCR 91.7 FM), we now seek money for improving on programming and updating equipment. It is estimated that US 10,000 is required
