The concept of media has expanded to mean any way that people communicate on a broad basis. In a wonderful sense we are all reporters in the age of Social Networking. Twitter providing information to participants in the latest Iranian Revolution is just one example. Now hours and hours of potentially productive brain and communication time is wasted during our time of travel. But who is traveling? The best and the smartest of us, some of the most outgoing, etc. With public micro-networks that are encouraged to discuss some of the worlds most major problems, we could tap into that unused time and unused talent, and work toward systemic change together. PMNs not only are media by current definition, but allow for the concept to expand into an entirely new genre of media. How do we find the solutions? We work together and we are more active. PMNs are part of the new-media solution.
Are you hoping that positive changes will occur from the discussions? That others who participate will come up with useful solutions to the concerns discussed, as well as developing local networks of those who can resolve the issues?
I can see how micro communication would help is such a large world, focusing on particular issues and entering into discussions. I am just wondering how, and if they can come together to take action...
Thanks for your thoughts. I think that you have our exact concept in mind. PMN is the abbreviation for Public Micro-Networks. To answer your question, I'd say that the purpose of media is to further communication. Through this concept, people could meet the people who are taking action in regions of the world that they are all traveling to anyway.
I often find myself explaining the El Fuego del Sol project in great detail while I'm flying. I travel to and from the project site several times a year. People next to me ask why I'm going to the DR, and the discussion starts from there. I'd like to think that there are many more people on the plane who would like to share in such a discussion, but they're just sleeping next to someone who is sleeping. We have active opportunities in our project for people who are interested in volunteering, solar cooking, micro-lending, sustainable housing, and many other ecological concepts. If I spent my flights typing back and forth with people, rather than just talking, I'd have written copies of my chats that I could share with others after the flight. I'd also have specific questions that people wanted answered. That's one of the things I love about Changemakers competitions: the interactive give-and-take of Q and A. The PMN concept would share a Changemakers-type experience with much more of the public. Hopefully it would bring more people to the Changemakers site itself.
One more thought that I had is that PMNs will also allow for listening. I have had amazing conversations on planes where I was the listener rather than the talker. If those were in the form of text, I would love to have them too. PMNs can expand the forum to more participants and increase the likelihood of amazing temporal conversation toward solutions.
Media-Participation; great idea for a NEW "fun theory"... as we've been wandering around very interesting discussions; although English is currently our greatest resource, it would be nice to be able to translate across the discussion boards posted in other languages. Would you agree...?: http://www.changemakers.com/en-us/node/66838#comment-21334
We agree:
We are all reporters in the age of social networking; community is based on sharing. Yet the depth of sharing is often revealed in the content of the conversation of the tweet. Leading people to others places as twitter does, could be better focused if we (humanity) could agree on one thing...we need a spokesperson(s) with a greater degree of understanding, of how to turn raw human participation, into government action, of, for & by the people, as it used to be when the world was MORE filled & focused on collaborative efforts [in the name of social-networking] called, "FAMILY".
DOES it due harm or help?
Do you agree, as it seems, that citizenship has taken the place of the root purpose of communication/community? Is sharing at a cost, the leader of common interests, leading US into ever-distant relations? And money would not be the problem here; it appears to be humanities 'value' of one another which gives currency its controlling & sacrificing attributes, for/over people to justify doing what they/we do to one another, all in the name of survival.
Calling focused happiness:
We call it SAD - Socially Absent [of humanities] Direction - that mentalities are far too abundant today which 'choose' / lack a focus for the longevity of socially-recyclable-communities. But, we can see a light at the end of the political-media tunnel which continues to propagandize war, suffering, etc.
Thanks for your continued input into discussing 'HOW WE ARE' inspiring the entire World through the 'use' of MEdia... using 'MYday' (experience) to influence mindsets.
There are a lot of problems out there, but I have a more optimistic perspective. I see us actually very close to some major global solutions. Population is exploding less in less as electricity is distributed, communication improves and women are empowered. We can solve the energy and water issues. Global warming is tougher, but if we can move toward hydrogen, that would improve as well. People are working together. We need to encourage it and make it happen. And oh, yes, have fun!
As a species, equipped with the Internet, we have the omnipresent ability to run the world through collective efforts. Now, all we need is a direction everyone can agree on. Starting with fun, there are many solutions that were once overlooked thanks to adults (without a youthful spirit) running things from the top down. It is now happening via internet that we are 'learning' to govern ourselves from the bottom up. It's good to see. Your youtube entry is a great portrayal of a bottle-up idea, even though it employs coca cola. But, we like it & hope you can use the link we sent you for building better green-communities.

I think you have hit on a great concept to harness the knowledge that goes through airports, etc. I wonder if your goal should be to evolve these networks into mini-crowdsourcing games similar to WorldWithoutOil.org or Superstructgame.org.
The one challenge I see in getting traction in places like airports is that people may not want to tackle head-on deep-thinking challenges. But if put in a game format I bet you'd see broader usage.
It's wild that you mentioned a game app, because I was putting the finishing touches on another entry into this competition that was based on a game play experience. I just finished it, and it is up at: http://www.changemakers.com/en-us/node/67100. It would work in companion with the PMN experience. The PMN could be accessed with our without participating in a game style application such as EcoRealidad.

Please explain why your idea/project, is suited/perfect to using... 'media' ...to bring about A BETTER "WORLD"...the entire planet...? Thanks! a.

Can I ask what a PMN is?

Chris, it's clear that we are on the same page. I would love a game format. Let me check out those sites that you mention, and get right back to you.
