What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?
The Social Startup Summit is a one-day, high-impact social entrepreneurship boot camp for high school students, held in four locations across the US annually.
Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?
Non-profit

What will be the impact of your idea?
Like Startup Weekend-meets-Do Something Social Action Boot Camp*! With a focus on creating socially-responsible ventures and following the un-conference model, The Social Startup Summit is a one-day, high-impact social entrepreneurship boot camp for high school students, held in four locations across the US annually. Fifty students come and pitch ideas for community service project, get in groups of 5 for the best pitch ideas, and work the whole day to develop a website, online media presences, and do final pitches to judges at the end of the day. The best pitch's team wins pro-bono consulting, free web and graphic design, and a micro-loan to jumpstart the project.
According to a recent Kauffman Foundation study, more than 25% of 8-21 year olds wish to start their own organizations. Thirty-seven percent of youth want to invent something. The Social Startup Summit nurtures independent thinking, creativity and innovation in giving youth a concrete time frame to create long-term community service projects that can grow into organizations.
Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?
Local non-profits and student organizations will help me develop the idea.
The Youth Service Expo:
At each summit there will be a Youth Service Expo. Student summit delegates will be able to connect with many opportunities from local non-profit organizations for ways to get involved in their local and global community: signing up for one-time or long term volunteering opportunities, gathering fundraising ideas and tools for starting projects, and more. If your organization engages youth in volunteering, offers resources for teen changemakers, or offers youth service and leadership development programs, the Youth Service Expo is a great way to reach out to teens who are ready to take action on causes.
I am the one to make this happen because I see a need for an event like this but I do not see any that exist. Unlike other programs, The Social Startup Summit does not simply lecture on skills needed to maintain a venture, but gives youth the tools to incubate a venture in one day.
How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)
It will cost $5,000 to jumpstart our idea, to cover costs to register a website domain, website hosting, purchase branding materials (flyers, business cards, posters). It will cost $20,000-$25,000 to sustain the idea and find training resources for recruiting and training conference organizers and event volunteers and to find online services for the training/support webinars we will offer event alumni.
Students, during the course of the event, will be lent videocameras and technology needed to become activist filmmakers and media producers to raise awareness for their project and get training in grassroots marketing, viral marketing, inbound marketing, and social media marketing.
