Mission Local is popular local news site covering San Francisco's Mission District. Started by Lydia Chavez at UC Berkeley's School of Journalism, the site now gets thousands of unique visitors a month, and reaches out to the diverse residents in the area. The site explores the most pressing issue in the news industry today - providing quality news while maintaining a sustainable news product. Currently, Mission Local is working on a suite of opensource smartphone news-related applications.

Within a year of launching, it's truly become a project that is making a difference in an underserved area. The Mission District in San Francisco is home to day laborers and housemaids, immigrants who work long hours. Mission Local is for them and about them, and by creating a multimedia site with a print component in both Spanish and English, the site is reaching out to this community by acknowledging and engaging both youth and adult through stories. The area is also home to many young professionals and artists, who also find local news coverage in Mission Local. No project is anything without its leader, and Prof. Lydia Chavez has gone above and beyond to turn ML from a class project into a 24/7, year-around go-to site for local news.
