Hello Michele,

It was not clear for me how you use sports to improve the situation of girls and women. Could you expand on this topic?

Do you offer gymnastics classes? Do you work in a specific area or with a special group of girls/women?

Thank you very much for your explanations.

Also I would like to invite you to join the Women Win group.

Women Win is the first ever international women’s fund that supports sport and physical activities as instruments for social change and women’s empowerment.

Women Win will use the competition to find a fellow between the ages of 15 and 65 years old that positively change the lives of women and girls in their community through sports.

Please go to http://sportforchange.changemakers.com/en-us/group/womenwin and click on join this group. After that go to topics being discussed and create a topic for debate or participate by telling Women Win more about your project!

Good Luck!

I believe being a part of a sports group builds character, strength and bonds women together for life. When you add that to being a role model you have a perfect opportunity to shine and gain confidence.

Hi Michele,

I want to echo Renata's comment. I am not sure what you do. I understand you give an award but for what and how do you use sport? I look forward to hearing more.

Girls involved in competition sports tend to be confident, dedicated and happy. I use those groups to reach out into communities to teach others how important it is to give back. Our group gives back to people and organizations in our community that do simple, nice things. To make the gifts affordable, we hand-make the awards ourselves. By using sports groups to send this message, I'm also encouraging physical activity which is so important in today's youth.

Hello Michele, I enjoyed reading about your project and agree that sport can be an essential ingredient for change. Do you purely focus on gymnastics or various other sports? Hope to hear from you soon.

I work with many different sports groups and am starting a new Special Olympics Gymnastics Team next month in Prince William County, VA. This is the first Special Olympics Gymnastics Team in Prince William County and I cannot tell you how excited I am to not only work with this group but to incorporate them into my giving back program.

Hi,
I think that encouraging girls to give back to the community is very important… after all its members of the communities that often start these schemes… so well done for encouraging this..! Not only does it help communities gain a taster it sports like gymnastics but it helps them grow as a person and gives them a chance to practise skills such as public speaking.

What kind of stuff do you have the girls do in the community? Have you though about putting on displays in elderly care homes, ect, would make a nice colourful treat.

All the best with your entry

Dear Sian,

Our girls give wholeheartedly to their communities though art, awareness and physical activities to mostly include gymnastics. We demonstrate and host small art projects in public schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, senior centers, youth groups, etc. and raise awareness about causes dear to our hearts. This past November we raised awareness and funding for the American Diabetes Association and handed out pamphlets about Type II diabetes in children; we called our demonstration, Handstand for Diabetes. The past couple of months have kept us extremely busy as we are doing well competitively and plan to win state completions in May. I receive lovely comments from people who research our gym and love to see us going beyond, "just gymnastics." I have several pictures of the girls giving back that I have yet to post. We have no real path we're on or know who we'll be giving back to. We just stay close, talk about how we can give back and share stories of kindness we see in others. It's a great thing and we're having fun while learning so much of life's important lessons. Thanks for your sweet comment and have a beautiful week.

Smiles, Michele
