Hi Rose
This sounds an amazing project. Horse riding in the heart of Brixton! I have been to the area lots of times and can't imagine this happening. I will have to come down and see it with my own eyes.
In your submission you haven't included what success would look like - however you go on to talk about the new building and field - I'm guessing this is success. It would be great to learn more through the comments. Are there any other Urban Horse clubs out there that you know of?
There are a number of urban horse projects and commercial riding stable in the heart of cities. We use 3 different stables in the London area. The project we have most co-operation with is Stepney Bank Inner City Stables in the heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne. You are welcome any time just get in touch via the phone number on our website Rose Spearing
Did you know that Clapham manor Primary School has just bought a piece of land between the school and Grafton Square? It's pretty big, and I don't know how advanced their plans in terms of use etc, but it might be worth checking out in case they love the idea of a stable and horse(s)?
Thank you very much for your comment.
But we have already acquired a site at Milbrook Road SW9, and we have planing permission.
We hope to open in 2010.
This is a great project and would be a sight to behold. It's a great way to show children that "sport" does not always have to include a ball and that true sport encompasses vast number of activities.
I see that you've partnered with a number of entities in your area. Your entry is great because it can be examined from a number of angles. Which angle in particular would you like for the judges to look at your entry with when it comes to "Changing the game for women?"

Dear Rahul
first I would like to apologize for not getting back to you sooner. We operate in an area with tremendous social problems which affect our members and we do a lot of mentoring and crisis intervention.and our funding is never secure we usually only have enough money for 3 months ahead. For this reason many times I simply cannot stop to answer the comments but I will try and keep up to date from now. In terms of changing the game for women is concerned. There is problem in the Uk of young women dropping out of sport in their teenage years. we are engaging young women who may not be interested in more traditional sports such as netball and hockey.
we are also giving women from ethnic minorities a chance to do a sport where they are massively underrepresented.
We are based in an area has the highest teenage pregancy rate in Western Europe . Through horse-riding young women often gain the confidence to try other activities and see different ways of life in other communities so their horizons are expanded beyond the neighborhood and we hope that this enables them to seek different options in life other than teenage motherhood which can hinder their education and prospects.
I know very little about riding but am now reading up thanks to your entry.
Could you highlight a little bit about how you are changing/influencing policy?
This could be at various levels- schools, local councils, ministerial or even national and beyond.
Congratulations about the space you have acquired, facilities are important.
I look forward to hearing the ideas around the use of this facility and how this can stimulate partnerships among sports orgs and corporate sector as well.
Hi Rose,
I read about this project in the 'Lambeth Life' community paper and was inspired by your committment to making riding accessible to a wider population than it serves now. As a rider and fellow Lambeth resident, I would be very interested in assisting in any way possible if you could use a volunteer. Just let me know how I can help!
Warm December wishes,
Stephanie

I am thrilled to see horseback riding being included in the notion of "sport"! As a lifelong rider, I often had to fight with kids in school to convince them that yes, horseback riding IS a sport.
This undertaking is amazing, and I would love to hear if anyone knows of similar projects in the US?
here in the Uk riding is very much regarded as a sport and the different disciplines of dressage , showjumping. and three day eventing are very highly developed as well as polo and long distance riding to name a few. Most of the kids we deal with dont know about these but they jump at the chance to learn to ride anyway
In the US we are in touch with Horses in the Hood in LA and the Compton Junior Posse in Compton. There is also Ebony Horse Women in Hartford and work for rides in Philadelphia who we will be contacting soon. Rose
Dear Michele, could you please send me some info on these different affiliants (Horses in the Hood in LA, Compton Junior Posse in Compton, Ebony Horse Women and any other groups or foundations that promote the need for horses in communities? I would greatly appreciate it!
Dear Nichele, this is my first time to this website. I am so enthused about the info I have found here. I am an advid equestrian from youth. I whole heartedly know that the horse industry itself is a sport, let alone what we involve our horses in (racing, polo, roping, barrels, bull dogging, showing, etc.). But on a more personable level, they do much more than just sports. I know first hand the therapy they can give to us and others. Especially those who have never had a chance to even touch one.
I now live in the city, but my vision and long term goal is to one day be able to do something in the way of horses and children here in my community. I have plans and prayers and I know that GOD will enable that to happen. It is needed in so many places, I want to help children see that there is much more out there and their dreams can and do come true.
Women Win is the first ever international women’s fund that supports sport and physical activities as instruments for social change and women’s empowerment.
It may be interesting to find out more about your work.
Please tell me more about your group Women Win. I am a single mother who has been blessed with 4 wonderful children. Due to extenuating cercumstances, we recently went through some tough times and our whole lifes have drastically changed. I am now back at school to better my career, and I have seen the hardships that a lot of mothers go through with starting over. I have always had horses, had big plans on how to utulize them to help others and I have not vered from my vision. Only side tracked a bit.
I know how these wondereful animals can greatly improve one's life; through companionship, commaderie, peacefulness (calming effect on one's spirit) - oh, the list just goes on and on.
I am very thankful for all the wonderful, caring people out there who support my dreams. Right now I am in the process of doing my homework and seeing where my options are.
If anyone has any advise or info that might be of help, I would greatly appreicate it.
There is much more that I have done in regards to this, but now, as with everything else, I am starting all over. And that's great, because that means it will be so much more wonderful than it ever would have been.
I think it's great to see a sport like horse riding being targeted and used to distract children from hardships they may experience in this area. Do you think that working with horses would also calm the children and relax them? It's a very interesting topic.
Equestrian is also a great, challenging sport and I've always had an interest in it since I was a child.
Do you find that you get more girls than boys into your club? I always thought that young girls have a special interest in horse riding.
Also, I find it great that you have managed to set up the club in a city! There are no equestrian schools/clubs here in Dublin city, or in the surrounding suburbs - all of them are outside the city in the country-side, so you can be sure that children of the inner-city here will never become members of a club unless people like you come along!
Well done, there is hope for us all yet!

Your project caught my eye as my sister is a keen horse rider and i see part of your project is located in the loughborough area where i am currently in my final year studying sports science.
I think the project is a fantastic idea, expecially how you are using horse riding as a tool to benefit the lives of these young children. The use of an urban environment is great as when i worked with children in America last summer, the activities which i noticed had the biggest postivie effect on the kids... in terms of challenging, enchancing skills and developing confidence were those activities in the outdoors... including horse back riding, ropes course and canoeing.
How do you go about choosing the 80 children to target a year? I imagine you plan to expand this number as the project grows?
Congratulations on your work so far and i look forward to hearing from you.
Hi Rose, I am so inspired by your work. It is an intense but worthwhile project which serves the needs of many young people. And it is also very intriguing, you would never associate horse riding with inner city young people and in particular young people from Brixton. I think its amazing what you are doing as you are opening these young people minds to a sport, a sport which they may never have had a chance to do otherwise.
Do you know if there are any other projects similar to yours in other parts of London?
Coming from East London it would be amazing if a project such as yours could be set up in east London.

Thank you for your input. It is interesting to see how you started and then developed your project.
You mention that there is a chance that your project could change policy. Can you please add more details about that.

Hi Rose:
I like how you are using horseriding lessons as a tool to teach social skills. You must learn to be very responsible in order to manage a horse.
As you build your on-loine plan, Ill be very curious to see your expected outcomes and how you will measure these.
Keep up the great work and good luck in the competition!

Is this a project focused on girls and women? Have you observed positive impacts in the lives of women and girls that participate in your project?
How do you think horse riding can improve women and girls' lives?
