Innovation
What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?
Advocacy and awareness for women in sport within existing sports structures and leadership frameworks
How many people does your innovation serve or plan to serve? Exactly who will benefit?
A present we have 450 individual and institutional members. Through the sports events and media awareness we have reached over 5000 people. The programme benefits sports organisations, media institutions, individuals, gymnasiums, the academic and policy institutions will also benefit from our research work and internship programme.
Do you have any existing partnerships? If so, please list and describe.
Our partnerships are at various levels including Ministry in Charge of Sport, Ministry in Charge of Education, National Sports Council of Zambia, Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committees and Confederation of Sport (NIF), Kicking AIDS Out Network, Sport for Social Change Network, Kalusha Foundation, UNESCO
In which sector do these partners work? (Check all that apply)
How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?
NOWSPAR conducts advocacy and awareness activities including email campaigns, publications, media discussions, submissions into policy review processes and meetings with leaders including political, civil society and traditional leaders.
NOWSPAR has membership of and partnership with various institutions including media and corporate sector. We facilitate policy review within sports institutions and support female sports persons to participate in sports events and competitions.
By working within the structures and partnering with the Government Ministries we have access to the policy makers and can input strategically.
We also engage professional sports women as advocates and role models; importantly we involve the men in the sports systems.
Further we raise awareness around the role that sport plays in development of persons and communities.
Impact
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact
Increased participation of girls and women in sport and recreation at all levels and all structures
What does impact/success look like? Please list any tangible measures of the impact of your innovation
- Revision of policies/constitutions in associations to include deliberate quotas for women
- Increased number of girls and women in sport and recreation in education institutions
- Increased coverage space in media of women’s activities in sport
- New sports facilities will have facilities considerate to women’s sanitation and security for the young
- Sports programmes with associations. NGOs schools designed specifically for girls
- Investment in sports equipment for women
- Investment in capacity development of women sports persons, coaches, administrators etc by all structures
Is there a chance that your project could change policy (within an institution or government)?
It is a very strong part of our work, to change policy of both Government Ministries, sports institutions and even the corporate sector in their involvement in sport. Issues include access to facilities, leadership structures and allocation of resources for women’s engagement in sport.
Aside from financial sustainability, how do you plan to grow the initiative or expand your intended impact?
By continuing to work through the education and sports system we intend to have chapters in each of the nine provinces of Zambia which will oversee the SPAR Clubs (Sport, physical activity and recreation) in the schools within the province.
In the long term we hope to expand our programme to include an academy of sport for women and girls.
We shall also strengthen partnerships and develop new ones as we progress.

Sustainability
How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?
It is financed by donations from board members, volunteer time, in kind support from the Ministries in charge of sport and education, fundraising and project fund from NIF
Financing source
Annual budget
US$110,000
Annual revenue generated
US$ 10,000
Number of staff (full-time, part-time, volunteers)
4 Full Time Volunteers, 5 part-time Volunteers, Several volunteers (Varying per project and season both local and international)
What are the main barriers to financing your initiative, and how do you plan to address these barriers?
Not many people understand the concept of advocacy; we need some full time paid staff to focus on resource mobilization.
What are the major challenges with regards to partnerships?
Not much now, but some organisations at first did not know what we were doing and thought of us as ‘competition’, but it’s better now. Main challenge is investing in time to ensure the communication and sharing that keeps partnerships going.
The Story
What stage is your project?
Ongoing project .
What was the motivation or defining moment that led to create this innovation? Tell us the story.
Through my experiences, I appreciated the value that sport adds to one’s life and witnessed the gender imbalances at various levels of sport especially while I was President of the Judo Association. I was moved to bring together a group of women to develop and drive a programme that would advocate for equal access to sport thus the theme- Every Body Matters.
Please tell us about the social innovator behind this initiative
