Innovation
What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?
This field has not been completed. (150 characters or less)
How many people does your innovation serve or plan to serve? Exactly who will benefit?
Beneficiaries and participants of this project would be visually impaired patients who have come to our Association to have the cornea transplant they need done. In order to have it done the patients must be included in a list and, in the meantime, they can develop various skills through sports in order to improve their quality of life. The number of people we wish to serve will depend on the number of patients included in the list and other interested women.
Do you have any existing partnerships? If so, please list and describe.
Our idea would be to forge a partnership with the Mexican Football Federation to have access to the facilities we need and the requirements set forth in the international Goalball Rules.
In which sector do these partners work? (Check all that apply)
How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?
Goalball is the only paralympic sport created exclusively for blind and visually impaired people in which participants compete in two teams of three. It is mainly based on hearing abilities to judge the position of the ball during the game (the ball has bells embedded in it). It also demands a great space orientation to succeed in being positioned in the most suitable place at every time, in order to intercept and throw the ball. The purpose is to throw the ball into the other team's goal with your hands. Any of the three players from the rival team will try to prevent the ball from being thrown into the goal. Every player must wear eyeshades to make everybody's visibility equal. The main barrier we could face may be the patients' lack of confidence in this activity, but we believe that they will be eager to be involved in it.
Impact
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact
To change visually impaired women’s perspective in relation to their ability to play sports and provide them with self-esteem in other areas.
What does impact/success look like? Please list any tangible measures of the impact of your innovation
With this tournament we intend to encourage other women with this disability to join the project, to provide them with the necessary tools in order for them to leave fears behind and be able to do some physical activity and change the way they feel life, making them live more intensely through sports. ALE Association has different offices in various states of the country. Our main idea is to implement it in the state of Querétaro, first, and later replicate it in the other states where we have offices, to integrate more women and create Goalball teams that can compete with one another.
Is there a chance that your project could change policy (within an institution or government)?
The policies would be basically to abide by the International Blind Sport Federation Rules, which are worldwide accepted.
Aside from financial sustainability, how do you plan to grow the initiative or expand your intended impact?
Firstly, we will implement it in the city of Querétaro, where the Association has an office, to later invite other states where we have presence to join the initiative.
Considering we obtain a favorable response and one that is positive for the participants, we will plan the organization of a national tournament in order for the initiative to grow.
This Entry is about (Issues)
Sustainability
How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?
In the first place, we would seek a partnership with the Mexican Football Federation in order to be provided with the facilities we need to organize the tournament. Besides, we would seek sponsorship from different companies for our uniforms, balls, etc. Whatever is necessary to carry out the project.
Financing source
Annual budget
-
Annual revenue generated
-
Number of staff (full-time, part-time, volunteers)
-
What are the main barriers to financing your initiative, and how do you plan to address these barriers?
The financial barrier to this project is to obtain funding for it; however, we believe that this kind of initiative improves the companies’ image due to their help to the improvement in the quality of life of visually impaired women.
What are the major challenges with regards to partnerships?
Basically, that the partners accept the project and cooperate with it.
The Story
What stage is your project?
Idea phase .
What was the motivation or defining moment that led to create this innovation? Tell us the story.
During ALE’s life I have come across various patients in need of an organ transplant to continue living and with some quality of life. I have myself gone through the suffering of those patients who are waiting for an organ and see life go by in front of them. I am positive that visually impaired people have a great potential to carry on with their lives as much as any other person. With education, patience, perseverance these people can improve their skills in order to feel at ease in the society in which they live. Sports, in this case Goalball, can be an important impulse for them to feel that their disability does not prevent them from enjoying a sport. Through the Association’s programs we give emotional and financial support to people with low incomes to be transplanted. This project allows us to approach the patients in a more human way, giving them the opportunity to practice a sport. Apart from giving them the opportunity to develop different skills, sports will provide the patients with a sense of competition, which can be an important tool to improve their self-confidence, something which they sometimes lack in their everyday life.
Please tell us about the social innovator behind this initiative
On September 21, 2004, my Alejandro went to heaven. He was the second of three children, a little boy with an incredible energy, with a look that is still in me. I had the chance to have him and guide him during three years and three months and it was a pleasure to do so. What else could I say? He was my son, my baby. Our goal is to promote organ donation and generate the material and human resources to carry out transplants in places where there are no means for that
