Hi Anna,

I love this idea. I specifically drawn to it as it attempts to make the program self sustaining. How do you choose the women who are involved? Do they self select into the program? If you were to win the prize - where would you direct the funding? Also have you tried to partner with any US food manufacturers like Tysons etc? How much funding do you need to talk this program to scale and make it self funding?

Looking forward to hearing more,

Holly

Thank for your comment Holly! Sustainability is the key to successful and long-term programs in rural Africa. The community needs to have ownership and control the direction of the program, they understand their community needs best. Girls Kick It is open to all women and girls who wish to participate. Although we have a target age range, everyone is welcome to participate. If I were to win the prize, the grant would help us to build the first poultry house in Paicho, purchase chickens, feed, water, cleaning tools and other related maintenance items and transportation costs from Paicho to Gulu town markets and hotels. We also would use the grant to host the first management and skills work-shop for women in Paicho and the surrounding communities. We are initially aiming for a grant of 5,000 USD to adequately start-up the poultry house and train the women with the necessary business and management skills to ensure success.

I will look into partnerships with US food manufacturers, thanks for the tip!

Hello Anna! Since I'm familiar with your outstanding work in Uganda, I'm not surprised to see another fascinating approach from you to address creating increased empowerment for the ladies of UG. I think Holly has a good insight about finding potential poultry partners for your idea, I would also look at finding a partner to assist with the construction of the facility. Architecture for Humanity is an amazing organization that I really think can provide some assistance - www.architectureforhumanity.org
Keep up the GREAT work in UG!

Great to hear from you Kevin! The teams here are getting stronger everyday and looking forward to their first tournament in 2009 next week.

I wish I could take credit for the idea, but the team conceptualized the poultry house and designed the building’s structure with the help of a local architect. Members of the Girls Kick It! team also developed the initial program proposal that was submitted to GYPA Uganda staff.

Thanks for the tip, I will look into Architecture for Humanity as possible partnership.

You are still most welcome to come visit us in Uganda!

Hi Anna,
Check out the following site: www.gamechangers.architectureforhumanity.org - if you have a vision for how to "change the game" through the construction of an innovative sports facility concept, we want to hear about it!
Best,

Anna,

There is a lot of demand for free range eggs & chickens plus organic food from european markets. Although built for the local community, I think you can get bigger and more money for the sports project with you start looking at fair trade issues. It will help you making even more money by exporting to Europe.
