This is a really interesting program. How did you decide that kickball was a sport that girls wanted to play? Also, I'm interested to know whether you're finding that providing entrepreneurial skills in soap making, hair tying, etc. has generated another source of income for the community?
Kick ball is a major female game in our country, most young girls have high interested in this game, every school, and communities have a kick ball team. We have a national kick ball Championship league in Liberia.
I decided this project base on my assessment in the communities with war affected young girls in the getto, streets and other part of the communities, to known their interest of playing kick ball as a game to help reintegrate and develop them, my idea was given a serious consideration by these girls and the community members. I was also able to study the rate of girls playing the game now, 60% of our girl’s population, and the long time history of the high interest of girls in the game.
Doing my assessment, I notice that most of these war affected young girls had no basic skill to become sustainable; they live on sale sex and getto life. Kick ball is a game that has the power to help reintegrate them and mold their mind, but the game doesn’t have more income generation opportunities for these girls. With this, I decided in the projected to create more income generation opportunities, by providing them with these entrepreneurial skills to have income and become sustainable in their communities. Also these girls will help there parents and the community to become sustainable with these skills.
Thanks for the quick response - it's great that you've been so involved with the community to make assessments that were appropriate for the girls you are servicing.
Are other sports for girls as popular as kickball in your country? Do you find that you have female coaches that can coach kickball or is it difficult to find female coaches for the sport as well?
