It just amazing to me that ladies of up to 60 years old are still out there in the field, kicking balls around. I tried playing soccer but it didnt take. At that age learning a new sport, other than the usual netball, it would take a lot. But I have tio give it up to the ladies for activly doing something that stops the communities from talking about each other, and rather finding ways of building each other up in their family lives. Postive thinking leads to positive action indeed

Zama,

Congratulations on your work! It is still so sad to hear that girls still don't have access to appropriate footwear and apparel to play. Hopefully you will find partners that support them.

Also I would love to hear your opinion at the Women Win group.

Women Win is the first ever international women’s fund that supports sport and physical activities as instruments for social change and women’s empowerment.

Women Win will use the competition to find a fellow between the ages of 15 and 65 years old that positively change the lives of women and girls in their community through sports.

Please go to http://sportforchange.changemakers.com/en-us/group/womenwin and click on join this group. After that go to topics being discussed and create a topic for debate or participate by telling Women Win more about your project!

Good Luck!

Hi Zama,

I admire your courage and love the smile on your picture! Keep on like this.

I think your project is great. I was wondering how many girls were trained by your group? Do they meet to follow any training, how often? Have you already organized any competition with other players?

I would love hearing more information from you.
All the best.

Galina.

Have you noticed, there are other participants from South Africa. Maybe it could be interesting to see what they are doing. For example:

Hi Renata, Galinaze

I would LOVE to take credit for this project, but its actually a woman from Soweto, maTsidi who started it all.

Renata, at the moment the ladies are training using donated sneakers from various organisations, or their old pairs. Because there is no organised soccer field, they train on the grounds of a local high school. Their search for partners has been a long unsuccessful road, once their funds were even diverted by a coporation into another project deemed more worthy.

Galinaze, thank you so much for compliant-everything is better with a smile on one face is it not ;)

as for the Golden Ladies, there are 15 ladies between the ages of 40 and 60, who meet three times a week for training. At the moment they are still learning the game but will enter competitions soon-ad hoc games with the boys helps them sharpen thier skills.

Thank you for the notification of the other participants in Mzansi-local slang for south africa- will have a look.

Keep smilling and shinning to you both

What a cool concept. Would love to hear what kind of response you get from community members in terms of support for older women participating in sport.

Is there any resistance from men in the community?

Good day

The response from the community is very positive. Not only did we get one of the male coaches to tech us for free but we also get support from the young boys. they give us thier old bibs and sometimes let us train with them so that we can improve out skills.

Mam Tshidi, this is a great initiative, it is quite encouraging to see elderly women taking to the soccer field as players not spectators! I would love to come and watch the team play. Please let us know when and where your next game will be taking place. And I will of course be cheering for the Golden Ladies!

All the best for you entry!

Its such a great thing to see our grandmothers getting out there and being active.

My mother, who is just a little younger than MaTshidi, had to stop jogging recently because she was alone and it was becoming dangerous-it would have been fantastic if she could have done a team sport such as this to keep her active, which is what she wanted.

I think it would be great if there was a league that had sections in various communities. Its a horrid perception that with age comes....nothing. Our elders are people who have lived longer than us and should not be locked up in old age home or their homes in their later years.

MaTshidi, keep it up and spread the word of the game.
