Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are encouraging the purchase of Fair Trade products:

A bouquet of flowers can say, “I love you,” I’m sorry,” or “Get well.” If they’re Fair Trade flowers they can also say, “I care.”

Every dollar spent on Fair Trade Certified flowers supports the health and livelihood of flower industry employees – mostly women in Central and South America. Flowers that carry the Fair Trade seal have been grown with fewer pesticides than typical flowers and pregnant workers are protected from exposure to dangerous toxins.

What is the likely impact of your idea? (150 words max)

RW WE (Are double-you we? It takes two to tango & sometimes more - your old self & the new ‘recycled/re-educated/re-inspired’ ones) will impact Earthlings, of Earth, through reversing every kind of 'IF' (Individual Footprint(s)), by ramping up the transition away from carbon related travel, by replacing it with ZERO EMISSIONS vehicles, travel & other rewards. ***IMPACT-RESULT: ‘Team RW WE’ kicks off on an ongoing global journey. One which will always being imbued with new volunteers, to promote our innovative initiative of providing support to tour little known places & unknown cultures. ‘WE’ will bring each tribe to the world stage [with education & videos about those cultures (as if curious & cautious children & vice versa) without ruining the indigenous nature of…& unique reason for traveling to & sharing of…time honored understanding] & the WISDOM which ALLOWS each of our tribes, to sustain ONENESS, with & within our environment(s).

Why is promoting global travel and engagement important? What makes your idea innovative? (200 words max)

From antiquity, the importance of uniquely knowing other tribes, sharing & communicating with each about the environment which supports its longevity has always helped to balance consumption to prevent the overuse of resources. Those tribes have now become our 'global village', in a domino effect of action & a house of cards, waiting to be toppled by increasing climate changes. Our idea is as innovative as smoke signals in the sky…or is that a hurricane…and earth will continue to innovate. Every tribe from every arc of the Earth, MUST read into the 'world wide smoke web' to contribute accordingly, by asking your self, “Are you, you (RW) from your future, or the Recycled noW” & “Can WE ‘travel’ back in time to discover/understand our ignorance, to re-ignite our journey with earth-lingering love for all life, in the present/gift, the world over, the planet around Recycled Wisdom”? Yes WE Can!

Describe Your Idea

Bicyclists all over the world deserve to "share their wealth of health" with anyone. Offsets of every kind (to pay fines, bills, traveling expenses on other vehicles (-cycles in tow) worldwide, etc., imagine it…!) will be given, for using a bicycle (or electric motorized cycle) as your primary transportation.

What would it take to launch or spread your idea? How much would it cost to make your idea a reality? (150 words max)

To ‘launch’ RW ‘WE’ need everyone to earnestly NEED to pitch in, & a unique website to ‘spread’ the love & care for earth will allow for this 'reality' to happen. RW ‘WE' need sponsorship-teams composed of small businesses & individuals matching one another's donations. ‘WE’ need GOV’s & NGO's contributing to a partnership-fund to level the playing field but not remove the advantages of any company's longevity as a leader in their respected field(s). Join RW ‘WE’ transitioning from FEAR OF POLLUTION to ZERO POLLUTION. Make your life healthier & simpler with RW ‘WE' -cycling for life. ‘IF’ YOU ARE alive…YOU ARE a leader…& RW ‘WE' will follow your lead in re-cycling YOUR earth. Condé Nast Traveler, IS our ‘lead’ launch pad for making RW ‘WE' your ‘reality’. Humanity is ready. Are you…ready to join the global-cycle tribe? [RW WE, estimates 70,000USD startup; 1 yr tour & website]

Describe your work as a social innovator (150 words max)

My work, in (n=social) ovation: to understand/innovate where humanity went off course, to grasp/innovate the significance of collective observation, to be an example of communicating/innovating ‘with’ others by being a better listener, to focus-on/innovate others’ gifts, so those gifts can transform the lives of any listener, to change/innovate my habits (even when they do not suit my wants) in order to better understand humanities needs. Last yet not least, to better the way for others to live off the grid [of control] & onto the earth grid freeing humanity from the ten-thousand-fear old trick of giving slaves more income, & rising prices, to “make” us all “believe” we’re free while oppressing us mentally with unnecessary propagandist media. ‘WE’ don't push the envelope; ‘WE’ mail it back to slave masters with messages of love in the face of persecution. Sow, if I am you. Are you me, reaping RW WE?

Problem Statement : Fare, most of the time, is always a point of argument between passenger and taxi/auto driver. They debate on this issue frequently. You got to see this common scene everyday on streets and stations. We all negotiate on fare issue if it is not a government controlled fixed rate system. Problem is more severe if a person comes from outstation and does not know the exact fare to his /her destination. Auto /taxi drivers are smart enough to know the psychological situation and unawareness of that person about the city and exploit him/her in many ways. Most common being the exorbitant fare. It not only creates the doubt in the mind of the passenger but also creates a bad reputation about the state government, city dwellers, and transport system. Passenger’s idiocy is the biggest hurdle for a good negotiation in the fare prices. Another situation being the emergency circumstances like late night travel or natural circumstances like during rainy season. Auto /taxi drivers demand much more than the normal fare. Even the resident of the city becomes the prey to these drivers.  Though pre-paid booths are there at several places, there are some problems associated with this system – 1. Their location – nobody knows where they are located in the station, airport 2. Not everybody prefers to go to that booth – many times they are vacant, or other drivers catch hold on you in between before reaching the booth 3. If you are a resident of the city, you probably know the exact /approximate fare and would not like to pay the service tax which these booths charge additionally.  Solution : I have thought of a digital fare information system which will be installed at Railway stations, bus stations, airports, major stations or pre-paid booths where the inflow of passengers is much more.It will be like a bidding system (like in stock exchanges) where auto / taxi drivers would place their bids in rupees for a particular destination. The digital display board will be placed at a height of 15 ft above the ground which is easily visible from the ground and also in a crowdie situation. The display board will be a kind of similar to digital board in a stadium when we watch cricket.  For example, when a customer reaches at a station (suppose Ahmedabad Railway Station), he goes to the digital board operating booth and ask the operator for an auto to IIM. Operator will announce the IIM destination and auto /taxi drivers will place their bids. Suppose one auto driver puts Rs. 60/- using a kiosk like touch screen keyboard, it will be displayed on the digital board. Within seconds or minutes, if another auto driver wants to take the passenger for Rs. 40/-, he can ask the operator to change the bid to Rs. 40/-. Now it depends on the passenger which bid he/she has to select depending on time availability /money comfort with the passenger. A passenger may wait for next 5 minutes in expectation to receive a good deal. It is always the case that some taxi/auto drivers has to go to a particular destination irrespective of whether they carry a passenger or not. If they carry a passenger, it is their extra income and if they do not carry a passenger then it is already accounted for by them.   Concept : The concept is based on the belief that everything finds its important in this world. The fact is the need /situation where it best fits. If one item /thing is useless for someone, at the same time, it may be very useful for other. Issue is to find that person which makes use of that item. Similarly in this system, there may be many auto/taxi drivers who will anyway need to go to a particular route but has to wait for a passenger even at a lower fare. This digital information system is a platform to fill that demand of service provider and consumer. It will bridge the gap of transportation requirement at a very economical and feasible way while maintaining the trust, confidence of the carrier as well as passenger and without going into the negotiation hassle. At one end while taxi/auto drivers will be happy to get their desired money, passenger is also happy to get the best rates for his/her journey.

Describe your idea in fewer than 50 words.

It is how to manage a taxi fare in a most optimised way when a passenger or visitor travels to a new city /state/country.
There is always a doubt on how much a taxi driver charges to a stranger when he/she drops on a station or airport. The digital system proposed by me gives the most economical bidding price to the traveler as many taxi walas compete for that price which is digitally displayed.

What makes your idea unique?

No such system in the world and beneficial to poor taxi drivers and the passenger. Win-win situation for both

Communities in Network - Strengthening for Decision

Describe Your Idea

As tourism grows within communities, poor inhabitants of these communities are often separated from the benefits from this growth. Once interjected, the economic interests from outside these communities make it very difficult for locals to compete in the newly developing local economy. These locals lack the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in the tourism industry in any meaningful way.   And while volunteer from outside the community can add small and somewhat immediate support, their impact is small.  The idea of Communities in Network is focused on addressing this problem through the development of networks of support within the community and then between similar communities and so on upward to the regional level.   In this way local communities unite to focus on their common needs/interests while informing tour operators and travelers about their needs and local work, and strengthening their voice in the public area.  One example of the benefits of such a network would broad access to best practices and capacity building content. The sharing of such types of information would help community members be competitive with larger non community tourism operators by giving them some of the key types of training and information they need to engage tourists successfully.  Finally, not only could such a network help community based tourism operators be more competitive but it is possible that when linked all together through the networks, these local entities could outperform larger entities because of the diversity and specificity of the information that could be gathered and shared.

创新

Are you a traveler or a travel company?

Tell us your idea. What makes your idea innovative?

The innovation comes from the concept of building local networks of knowledge, involving tourism issues and local needs, empowering and strengthening communities and also, transferring these resources to tour operators and visitors, in order to make the tourism more helpful and fair for these communities.

影响

了解详情↑ 隐藏↑ 隐藏

What is the likely impact of your idea?

This idea will have direct impacts on the communities, bringing information, knowledge and also, visibility of their work and necessities. The impacts will be also felt between the larger non community tour operators, since they will find resources, through these networks, to build tours with more helpful activities with the local persons, and with a much larger impact. In this way, even the tourists will feel the benefits as their tour experiences will be finely tuned to the realities of local culture and more authentic as a result of the influence of the community member influence in the tourism experience. Volunteers will be positively affected by being able to participate themselves in the activities of the smaller community based tourism operators working in different communities while contributing to the knowledge base of the Network.

What would it take to launch or spread your idea?

The first step would be establish and organize the logistics of the local, municipal and regional networks before addressing the actual issues. This process would involve inhabitants, schools, local businesses and local organizations. The network building process would need planning support and operational expenses, as well as, some orientation for the network management, marketing and funding. The development of the network would nurture each community as a single unit through this incubation stage toward the development of its own capacity. We believe that the development of this first prototype community network could be undertaken for about USD 50,000. We also believe that each new community network after this could be done more cheaply by replicating the existing systems, methodology and skilled human resources from the first network.
The overall network could be made sustainable by leveraging the resources of each existing network once the chain has started. Donations of professional services, human resources, cash, and volunteer hours, would all help the network be sustainable. Tour operators and tourists could also be encouraged to support either directly or simply via surcharges to the services they purchase. In this way, the Network would be employing a Fair Trade Tourism model
Ultimately, these networks will be the best source of information for travelers or tour operators on how to best way to help the local community and delivery the most authentic tourist experiences.

Describe yourself as a social innovator.

We are an environmental organization, with experience in regional ecotourism projects, wildlife research, conservation projects and volunteering program. We hire and capacitate local persons, also making possible the local children participation on the project issues. Currently, we are working in the planning of the re-urbanization of the Peri Lake, where most of the local community lives. We can see that the impact of many projects could be much larger if the community were organized to discuss their needs and how the projects would be best implemented.

Describe Your Idea

Are you a traveler or a travel company?

Travel company.

Tell us your idea. What makes your idea innovative?

While the demand for socially conscious tourism is growing, existing programs don’t take full advantage of experiences before, during and afterward. Art Aids Art’s sustainable tourism model – Community Activism Travel – is unique in engaging travelers and their home communities from the moment a trip is planned, transforming an individual’s excursion into a shared experience benefiting a network of active learners.

Meet our traveler, Ella. Instead of traveling solo to South Africa, Ella takes her community “with her.” Before departure, Ella reads her assigned learning materials. She shares insights, solicits questions and receives input from her Travel Team, a supportive group of friends, family and local school children (recruited with Art Aids Art’s help).

Once she departs, Ella stays in touch through video blog entries, creating a “virtual travel” experience for the Travel Team. Ella takes part in education and small business projects at Home in the ‘Hood, a thriving community center, working side by side with residents of Khayelitsha, and gaining a deep understanding of their entrepreneurial efforts to alleviate poverty. Returning home, she now acts as a Global Advocate.

影响

了解详情↑ 隐藏↑ 隐藏

What is the likely impact of your idea?

Art Aids Art is transforming travel into a catalytic experience for economic development, community education, and international exchange. Travelers become Global Advocates by engaging deeply with a particular community during their visit and return home as social entrepreneurism ambassadors.

As a Global Advocate, Ella represents Khayelitsha with understanding and vision. She shares her experience with the Travel Team at a homecoming fundraiser party, introducing them to Khayelitsha’s handmade art (shipped by Art Aids Art). The group brainstorms about local venues at which to market the products. Ella visits the school classes that followed her trip and brings letters from their sister school in Khayelitsha. With her return, Ella has generated income for and deepened relationships with the Khayelitsha community, while creating opportunities for ongoing communication and collaboration.

What would it take to launch or spread your idea?

Art Aids Art has been developing Community Activism Travel since 2003, building relationships with schools, collectives and tourism operations. In 2008, after 3 years of fundraising and collaboration, Art Aids Art opened Home in the ‘Hood Community Center in Khayelitsha, the first such American-led project in the Western Cape. Four microbusinesses (Finalists in Intuit’s Small Business Competition), including a tea shop, art boutique, tour service and bed and breakfast, will launch by year’s end.

A multimedia South Africa curriculum is being created for elementary and high schools, to be utilized by Global Advocates. With the exception of a website and second tour van, all elements are in place. Cost: $15,000.

Given demand for responsible tourism, and the relational nature (word of mouth marketing) of the U.S. portion of the program, we plan for sustainability and expansion.

Describe yourself as a social innovator.

On our last day in South Africa in 2002, my colleague and I met remarkable teachers at a center for malnourished children and, being educators, provided them with literacy training. Inspired by the teachers’ responsiveness, we returned to Khayelitsha township to collaborate further, bringing luggage filled with their requests: children’s books and black dolls.

Upon leaving, our luggage was again full: this time with beaded dolls purchased to support Khayelitsha parents earning a living through beadwork. We hosted a party, selling the dolls and sending profits to secure the artists a workspace -- a shipping container, which they converted into a studio.

Now we travel through our non-profit, Art Aids Art, not only to teach, but to promote economic development. In the U.S., we sell at private homes (no overhead!) and from our website, earning thousands of dollars for Khayelitsha artists.
