Here's a brilliant notion: let college students pay back their college loans based on a percentage of their actual income. Lumni has figured out how to do this—while earning a profit for investors who make the loans—relieving students of the stress of making exorbitant loan payments after graduation and giving them some flexibility in how much they must earn.

Watch this Changemakers feature video about how Lumni does it.

To provide a place (cafe) for young kids to have a safe, relaxing, social experience to help assist with homework help and to have a place where they can share their skills and talents. This would also be a place to make new friends and also to learn a better alternative way to eat smart.

The Need for your solution: What problem or challenge are you trying to solve?

Libraries in NYC need a major make-over. There are not many places for young people to go study besides out dated libraries. Students need a place they can relate to, a place that they can relax and do their homework and study. Many times it is hard to do that when it is too noisy or hard to focus in our own home.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

we feel having a café for
children and young adults would make a big difference in our communities. These
generations of kids grow up learning that having drinks with lots of sugar and
easting fast food is normal. Well, unfortunately it is because its everywhere in and
out of our communities. Finally a place where you can eat and drink healthy while
you study, help someone study or even volunteer. Our idea is that there can be a
cafe in at least one community center per neighborhood.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities that are involved in your solution. Consider telling us a story about the solution in action and how it creates impact. For idea-stage pitches, consider providing a hypothetical example

Our ideas for sparking an urban cafe trend.
• Having access to read books and use the internet while still monitoring
the youth through supervision & restrictions to certain websites.
• Having a juice bar and snacks that can be tasty and nutritional
• Students can instruct their own workshops on many different topics
• There can be open mics at least once a month (dance, poems, songs, drama etc.)
• Tutors can be provided by organizations who hire and send tutors to help
• Have special guest speakers to help motivate the youth
• Have a safe and relaxing environment for students to feel welcomed and
want to work on their school work or art. There will be a schedule set for every activity starting at 3pm on weekdays and a few hours on Saturday.
Committees will form for specific duties in order for the cafe to run smoothly. This has the possibility to help create a positive culture in a community.
This is an example of how a weekday schedule for our cafe.
Mon.
3:30pm to 4:30pm-Homework/Tutoring/Research
4:30pm to 5:15pm-Read News 15Min/ Share News 15Min/ Debrief 15Min
5:15pm to 6pm-Work on your Art!
6pm to- 7:30pm-Mentoring
7:30pm to 9pm- Evening Cafe/ College Prep

The Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem that you are addressing with your solution. And how does your proposed solution differ from or build on these approaches?

We havent heard of any places within communities that have cafes for the youth.

Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you or the person who came up with your proposed solution to get started and/or to see the potential for it to succeed.

We have spoken about this a couple of months ago. We usually sell drinks and snack to fundraise at our center. My mentees, mentors and myself came up with an idea to have a urban cafe in our site and maybe in different communities. We thought we could use our liberation hall room which has nice color paint, sofas, rugs, beanbags, tables and computer stations.

Impact: What is the impact of your solution to date? Also describe the projected future impact. (If your solution is an idea you can just describe projected future impact.)

Many New York City neighborhoods develop a bad reputation due to crime or lack of organizations who target youth at risk. Community leaders have the opportunity to help change their environment. If adults don't have anything productive for the youth to do then the youth will find something to do among themselves. The outcome is not always pleasing.

We think it would make a great impact on youth because it would be a safe and positive place for young people to do homework, study, eat, drink, relax, chat with friends and also get tutored by a volunteer. They can also share and teach their skills and talents. We even feel this ideas can be a start to a trend for all communities to have cafes.

Full Impact Potential: How do you plan on spreading your solution moving forward? (Please consider spread within New York City or beyond, policy reform, how you might get others to replicate/adopt your solution or other mechanisms)

We know this idea have a lot of potential to be big and we feel it can start in NYC but other cities can use urban cafes for young people. We would like to start our cafe and work through trial and error and have different projects and can help build our very own cafe.

Idea (poised to launch)

This Entry is about (Issues)

Elevator Pitch

We have a clear mission statement to provide flexible, quality care and education in a bilingual, environment. This will give children a unique opportunity to learn in and about another language. We hope to offer students & families on a low income or returning to work affordable childcare options.

Problem

According to the critical period hypothesis, there's a certain window in which second language acquisition skills are at their peak. Children under the age of 7 have a unique opportunity to achieve near fluency and perfect accents when learning an additional language. The second part of Little Linguists innovation is the flexibility and affordability. Market research has highlighted these two areas as a barrier to childcare for many parents.

Solution

Research suggests that bilingual children have other academic benefits, such as higher math scores and sharper critical thinking skills. And learning a second language at such a young age doesn't hinder any abilities in the child's native language. Offering children a bilingual education from birth will enable these children to distinguish themselves in the future with such a competitive jobs market. This will also provide them a greater opportunity to work abroad. Our unique pricing structure and pay per hour service aims to benefit a number of local families allowing them to access childcare when they need it.

Example

Parents from all socio-economic profiles need flexible childcare, however with the formal childcare market unable to provide this parents turn to informal childcare arrangements where, “unreliability and instability are common disadvantages”. It is clear that access to flexible and affordable childcare is essential to keep both parents working which will in turn improve the economic growth in the UK. Little Linguists aims to address this while, providing the unique opportunity to learn another language. Children will be provided with special opportunities to learn about human rights, equality & healthy living. Fundraising and special events will be organised to encourage the participation of the community.

Impact

I have been working with disadvantaged families over the last six years. Providing children from the local community fantastic play opportunities within my role as a centre manager. I have also worked with a number of other childcare providers to help them evaluate and improve their current practice. As a start up Little Linguists Nursery has not made a social impact to date, however we have big plans to. I aim to provide children with a rare opportunity to learn in and about another language, promoting multiculturalism. The flexible childcare offer will enable working parents an affordable way to return to work, which is essential for the recovery of the current state of economy.

Marketplace

The nursery marketplace is wide, however there are not many bilingual nurseries in London. My own market research of 152 respondents has highlighted a need for this service in this area. Parents want to be sure they are getting value for their money as they struggle to work alongside raising a family. “[A] challenge for nursery businesses now and in the future is to provide a more varied range of services, and niche products including technology, or specialist staff that can distinguish a business from its competition.”

Sustainability Plan

I have applied for a business loan & have invested my own money into the business. The future sustainability relies on income from the sell of full time, part time and ad hoc nursery places and mother and baby classes.

Founding Story

Over the last 9 years I have been working on my business plan, which originally was to set up a generic nursery. However after researching the amazing learning capabilities of young children I realised a nursery could become an excellent opportunity to empower the next generation. I first encountered bilingualism whilst studying a short Spanish course in Barcelona. I was amazed by the fact that the only monolingual students were all English first language speakers either from England or USA. “Over 300 languages are currently spoken in London schools” Bilingualism is essential and the early years is a perfect time to enable this.

The Need for your solution: What problem or challenge are you trying to solve?

NYC's black and Latino young men are in need of support networks, role models, and activities that provide positive influences. Youth often turn away from school and to the streets because they don't feel valued or successful. The challenge is to find ways (1) to engage black and Latino young men and particularly those most at-risk, (2) to provide positives influences that make them feel valued, and (3) to teach concrete academic, social, and emotional so that youth have the tools to achieve success.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

South Bronx United (SBU) attracts community youth by appealing to their interests: soccer. With a growing immigrant community from African, Latino, and Caribbean backgrounds, thousands of black and Latino youth bring a passion for soccer. They have the opportunity to participate on recreational or competitive travel soccer teams. In addition to leveraging the natural bonding that occurs on athletic teams, SBU staff and volunteers provide personalized attention and a caring support network to make youth feel valued and keep coming back. Then, most importantly, SBU programs teach the academic, social, and emotional skills to help youth succeed. Together, these components will help transform the lives of hundreds of young men.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities that are involved in your solution. Consider telling us a story about the solution in action and how it creates impact. For idea-stage pitches, consider providing a hypothetical example

Typically, Bryan skipped one day of school each week. He often felt lost in school. No one in his family had attended college. Bryan's family had immigrated to the U.S. when he was young. He was told that he might not be eligible for college and that it would be too expensive anyways. The soccer field was one place where he felt at home. He found SBU playing after school one day and soon he had joined a team. Suddenly, he was around peers and coaches who share his interests but talked about school and college frequently. He began attending the SBU After School Tutoring Program, sitting with a volunteer tutor twice a week to learn material he hadn't understood in class. Furthermore, SBU staff began helping him and his parents to gain new immigration status through a program called the Dream Act. With SBU, Bryan had the chance to visit colleges around the city and began to discover that college might really be an option for him. His school had gone on college trips before, but he was never previously eligible to attend because of his low attendance. Since joining SBU, Bryan is now on track to not only graduate high school but to be the first in his family to attend college.

The Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem that you are addressing with your solution. And how does your proposed solution differ from or build on these approaches?

Soccer has been used for social change across the globe. Within NYC, a few of organizations use the sport with the stated goal of serving vulnerable populations, although no others work exclusively within the South Bronx, statistically the nation's poorest congressional district, with 49% of children living under the poverty line. Also, none of these agencies have developed educational and social support services to the extent that SBU has already done. Other organizations engage youth through other sports, but nothing has the potential to reach the immigrant community like soccer.

Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you or the person who came up with your proposed solution to get started and/or to see the potential for it to succeed.

As a teacher leading after school soccer groups at a local middle school, it became clear that a team atmosphere provided tremendous opportunities for youth to learn and develop. On the last day of the after school season, two students came up and asked me, "What are we going to do after school now? We would come here every day if I could!" It was evident that soccer provided the perfect platform for these young men part of a growing immigrant population that led to many youth who were passionate about soccer but disconnected from typical out of school activities. The next year South Bronx United was born out of the idea that community youth like these needed a engaging program to connect to and keep them off the streets.

Impact: What is the impact of your solution to date? Also describe the projected future impact. (If your solution is an idea you can just describe projected future impact.)

In 2012, SBU served 595 boys and girls, 74 percent of whom are black or Latino males. Every high school senior in the SBU youth development and travel soccer program graduated high school. 93 percent matriculated in college. 98 percent of students were promoted to the next grade. 90 percent of participants stayed in the program, that requires a typical commitment of 6-12 hours per week. Through stronger programming and increased services provided, SBU anticipates having an even deeper impact on every youth it serves--such that youth are better prepared for college so that they can all earn a 4 year degree. Increased resources and capacity will allow SBU to broaden the impact to a greater number of youth.

Full Impact Potential: How do you plan on spreading your solution moving forward? (Please consider spread within New York City or beyond, policy reform, how you might get others to replicate/adopt your solution or other mechanisms)

SBU's model, or components of its programs, can be adopted across the city, nation, and even the world. SBU is already in the final stages of joining StreetFootballWorld, an international network of organizations that "use soccer as a tool to empower disadvantaged young people by engaging private and public partners to create social change." This platform would give us the opportunity to share our practices with, as well as learn from, organizations across the globe. A few individuals and organizations, from NYC and beyond, have already reached out to us in hopes of learning about starting their own ventures. With increased resources, we may be able to formalize a process for mentoring others or facilitating potential replication.

SBU believes in the value of partnering to strengthen programs and services. Organizations such as the Inwood House provide supplementary programs. SBU works with New York Cares and others to build capacity in administration, volunteer management and recruitment, and program evaluation. SBU is also part of several community coalitions.

Elevator Pitch

Kasiisi Food Farm Future aims to utilize agriculture, fundamental to the economy of many developing nations, as a lever to create change in education, financial literacy, social interactions, and health at the primary school level in Uganda for strengthening the local community.

Problem

Primary school students in rural western Uganda have limited nutritional knowledge and often do not have the resources to consume enough food to even focus in school. Additionally, the vast majority of families do not have the resources to allow their children to pursue further education beyond primary school.

Solution

Students at Kasiisi Primary School in rural western Uganda will engage in a hands-on curriculum centered on experimental agricultural techniques, which maximize and focus on crops that are highly nutritious. Students will have their own plots on available land at the primary school. For development of financial skills, students will also be empowered to run a business through the club based on selling food products made from what they grow and raise and where they can reinvest the profits in furthering the club’s mission.

We aim to:
Maximize productivity and nutritional value of family subsistence farms.
Increase willingness of families to support children’s education.
Develop financial literacy, developing future business leaders

Example

Utilize student created plots as an example of how to maximize the productivity and nutritional value of family subsistence farms.
- This would allow families to pay secondary fee by increasing farm profits.
- Give students, the majority of whom will be farmers, the skills needed to successfully join the agricultural economy, by demonstrating that agriculture has the potential to be a viable, profitable, and honorable career.

Improve the nutrition of students, by having families provide high nutrient crops to supplement the provided school porridge.
- Empowering families to help feed their children as opposed to completely depending on the school provided porridge.
- Helping improve the nutrition of food provided at home.

Impact

Increase the willingness of families to support their children’s education beyond primary school by demonstrating the short-term benefits that education can bring (in this case increased agricultural productivity) by
- involving parents in an event each term such as an exposition fair, with meal from the grown crops.
- Providing chicks, piglets, seeds for plants, etc. as incentive prizes (for achievement, good work, etc.) that are tangible benefits to the family.

In building up to these greater goals, we traveled to Uganda in winter 2012 to form local partnerships and learn about on the ground conditions. We have already started the club as a pilot at Kasiisi Primary School, which serves over 1000 students, and developed nutritional and agricultural curriculum in partnership with experts at Harvard and MIT.

Marketplace

We are formally collaborating with the nonprofit The Kasiisi Project, which has worked in the region for more than a decade. They help provide a maize-based porridge to Kasiisi Primary School students at lunch, which helps students who would otherwise go hungry that school day. However, this is a carb-heavy, empty calories meal which we are working with to help make more nutritious yet still cost-effective. We will also be collaborating with them to make our nutritional and agricultural curriculum complement their conservation curriculum.

Sustainability Plan

A main component of our club plan to develop financial literacy from an early age, crucial for understanding of microfinance, budgeting, savings, insurance etc. which would help develop Uganda’s future business leaders.
- Use the small student-run business as an example of how to generate and maximize profit by taking basic raw materials and increasing the value (and thus price) by additional processing (such as cooking, preservation).

Founding Story

We believe in the power of agriculture, fundamental to many African economies, as a lever to create change in education, financial literacy, social interactions, and health at the primary school level in rural Africa for strengthening the local community.
Our team has had experience working on food, nutrition, and health issues in rural western Uganda for the past two years in partnership with the Kasiisi Project. Team member Dominic grew up in rural western Uganda and attended Kasiisi Primary School. Bonnie and Julia have both traveled to and worked with programs at Kasiisi Primary School.

Soap For Life

Year founded

2013

Stage

Start-Up (a pilot that has just started operating)

This Entry is about (Issues)

Elevator Pitch

Soap4Life is an educational project. We give Dutch children information about the importance of hygiene and the hygiene problems in the world through an educational package. With this project children learn about soap, the impact of the use of palm oil and they make their own palm oil free soaps.

Problem

There is a big hygiene problem in developing countries. In these countries there’s not enough soap and water cleaners and as a result people get sick. But soap is another important problem. Soap is made of palm oil and the production of palm oil has a big impact on the tropical rain forests in Indonesia. They are cutting down the forests for plantations, a serious problem for the monkeys in the forests but also for the population.

Solution

For working to a better world, I think it’s very important to use children. Because children are our future, they really can make a difference. That’s why my solution begins with education. In the first place I want to inform children about the problem of hygiene and have their attention to the use of palm oil. Through the use of palm oil free soap, we can save the rainforests in Indonesia. For each educational package I donate money for one Emergency Hygiene Kit for a developing country and for protection of the monkey’s in Borneo and Sumatra. The children can sell the soaps they made at school and collect extra money for a better hygiene in developing countries or protection of the tropical rainforests.

Example

When I sell a package to a school in the Netherlands, the teacher receives all the information about both problems. In first place the children are learning about hygiene in developing countries. They discuss about possible solutions and then they get information about palm oil plantations in Indonesia. After that they can make their own soaps with beautiful colors and delicious fragrances. They sell their soaps to parents, friends or family. After this lesson children are aware of the impact of using palm oil and some of them may use palm oil free products in the future. With the collected money hygiene circumstances can be improved and organizations in Indonesia can protect the tropical rainforests.

Impact

My products have a big social impact because we learn children how to behave for the best hygiene. As a teacher you have a big influence on children so it’s important to learn them the right things. On this moment I’ve sold only a few of this packages with the soap making materials and educational program about soap, but I hope more schools will like this idea. For every package we sell, we donate money to Concern Worldwide for giving one Emergency Hygiene Kit to a family in a developing country. On this moment we sold only two Soap4Life packages, so we ‘saved’ two families. We also donated money to Monkey Business for protecting the monkey’s in Indonesia.
In the future I hope to achieve as much as possible children in the Netherlands, but I also want to enlarge my education to developing countries so I can learn the people there about improving the hygiene conditions.

Marketplace

The international soap maker Lush is also working with palm oil free soaps since a few years. But the main goal of this concern is selling luxury soap, while my main goal is involving children in de soap making process. Up to now I saw one other company who sells educational soap programs, but I don’t think their materials are wide enough, because they don’t add information about hygiene in developing countries. They only deliver the soap making materials for schools and donate money to Oxfam Novib. Besides, their packages are more expensive than mine.

Sustainability Plan

I make money by selling products in my web shop. On this moment, I’m only a profit organization. So my web shop is financially sustainable by sales. I collect money for Concern Worldwide, but this is different from my income. In the future I hope to start my own nonprofit organization Soap4Life. With this organization I want to collect money for hygiene in developing countries without making a profit.

Founding Story

When I was seven years old, I made a collection for the people in Kosovo during the civil war there. Our whole village was coming to bring clothes, toys and toilet things. After a few days a big truck was going to Kosovo with thousands gifts. The truck driver made a tape for me so I could see it at home. I’ll never forget the happy faces of the people in Kosovo when they saw the Dutch gifts.
Last year I started a web shop for soap and soap making materials. For my study I’m working in education so I decided to do something with education and soap. But since my Kosovo-experience, I know I also love doing something for other people and make the world a little bit better in my own way. That’s why I chose for this project.

ScriptEd - Teaching Kids from Low Income Communities to Code

The Need for your solution: What problem or challenge are you trying to solve?

The technology industry is not accessible to all students through traditional high school curricula. Only one in ten schools in the United States offer computer science classes. At the same, The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the technology sector will grow another 22 percent by 2020, making it one of the fastest growing career fields.

Young black and latino men are underrepresented in the software engineering industry. To remain innovative, the industry must employ a diverse workforce, and young black and latino males should be included in that workforce.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

To solve this problem, ScriptEd recruits and trains professionals from the technology industry to teach computer programming courses at high schools in low income communities. Students participate in courses twice weekly throughout the school year, and are placed in internships in technology firms over the summer. By learning to program, students from low income communities are empowered to be the creators of technology.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities that are involved in your solution. Consider telling us a story about the solution in action and how it creates impact. For idea-stage pitches, consider providing a hypothetical example

Raul is a junior at Harlem Village Academies High School. Raul loves video games and using technology, but had never thought of himself as someone who could make the games and software he was using every day. He learned about ScriptEd, an after-school club at his school, through one of his friends. Raul began attending ScriptEd's after school sessions and quickly learned the fundamentals of HTML, CSS and Javascript, and began to create his own games.

At ScriptEd's hackathon in April, Raul won a top prize for creating a memory game program (see here: http://scriptednyc.github.io/Hackathon/memory/memory.html). His success at the hackathon motivated him to continue developing his programming acumen, even outside of ScriptEd.

This summer, Raul will participate in a 4-week internship at Thrillist, a tech firm based in Soho. Raul will work with the developers at the company on small projects, like creating a currency converter for its online marketplace.

Raul plans to continue with ScriptEd next fall. At that time, he will begin learning a new computer programming language (either Python or Ruby).

The Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem that you are addressing with your solution. And how does your proposed solution differ from or build on these approaches?

Several other organizations in New York City, like Girls Who Code, Coder Dojo, and Code Now teach students to code. ScriptEd is different from these organizations in that the program is hosted in students’ schools. This model removes some of the traditional barriers that prevent low-income students from participating in similar programs. ScriptEd also places its students in summer internships, and teaches its curriculum in industry standard languages to ensure students can easily transfer their skills to their internships.

Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you or the person who came up with your proposed solution to get started and/or to see the potential for it to succeed.

Liz Davidson and I have had the privilege of working with 100's of inspiring students from low-income communities. We saw our students accomplish amazing things. Some were the first in their families to go to college. Some overcame language barriers to become valedictorians of their classes. Others earned high grades despite job and family commitments. Our students told us they were going to be journalists, doctors, forensic scientists, lawyers, and teachers. None of them ever told us they were going to be computer scientists, web developers, or software engineers. In fact, most of our students never knew these tech-related careers even existed. ScriptEd was founded with the idea that we could change students lives by teaching them to code.

Impact: What is the impact of your solution to date? Also describe the projected future impact. (If your solution is an idea you can just describe projected future impact.)

Over the past school year, ScriptEd served 25 students in two schools in New York City. Our short-term goal is to serve 75 students by the fall of 2013. ScriptEd aims to expand to six cities and serve 6,300 students across a spectrum of courses by 2017. To do this, we plan to engage approximately 1,000 volunteers from the tech industry.

Full Impact Potential: How do you plan on spreading your solution moving forward? (Please consider spread within New York City or beyond, policy reform, how you might get others to replicate/adopt your solution or other mechanisms)

Both our low-overhead costs and our school-based model allow us to easily replicate our program to additional schools and cities. We chose our model intentionally so as to reach as many students as possible. We plan to expand our mission through grassroots organizing, media campaigns, and through ScriptEd's network of stakeholders.

The Need for your solution: What problem or challenge are you trying to solve?

Students who will be the first generation to attend college do not have the opportunities to experience interacting with college students that second or third generation college students often have. Many first generation students do not view college as a tangible goal. The concept of college attendance is completely foreign and they have few ways of making this mystical place a realistic vision. Seeing themselves on a college campus or interacting with other college students seems impossible. Thus, working towards an unimaginable goal may seem futile and the process may seem discouraging.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

College students are often trying to find ways to "give back" but do not have the space in their busy schedules to take advantage of volunteer opportunities. If courses had civic engagement opportunities built into their schedules and syllabi, college students could interact with younger students who may be future first generation college students thereby bringing a "face" to the idea of college. College students could bring the lessons they learn in their courses to the younger students. This would benefit the college students by helping them to learn through a teach back method and would help the younger students by introducing college to them on a very real and tangible level.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities that are involved in your solution. Consider telling us a story about the solution in action and how it creates impact. For idea-stage pitches, consider providing a hypothetical example

Drama students at Lang College at the New School meet once a week to learn about child development and drama instruction and then meet on-site at "I Have A Dream" - NY programs where they teach the younger Dreamers literacy through drama activities. The college students receive a full 3-credits for their course. Dreamers learn about drama, eventually performing a full-length piece for an audience and New School students are able to "give back" while meeting credit requirements. Dreamers develop real relationships with actual college students which helps them to understand that college is a real place with real people. These friendships allow Dreamers to imagine themselves at a college and understand that college is a tangible place. College students further their understanding of the world around them and the many ways that drama (their major) can be used in the real world helping to solve real world problems such as the education gap. This course structure can be used in a variety of subjects such as political science majors and a blog-making activity, English majors and a book club or business majors and planning a small fundraiser (i.e. bake sale).

The Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem that you are addressing with your solution. And how does your proposed solution differ from or build on these approaches?

Many organizations are addressing this problem, but this solution meets the needs of all parties. College students need credits, students need mentors, after-school programs and general classrooms need more adult role models and helping hands. By partnering colleges with schools and/or after school programs, everyone benefits with very few draw-backs. The impact that each party has on each other is immeasurable.

Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you or the person who came up with your proposed solution to get started and/or to see the potential for it to succeed.

After the very first meeting of the New School students and Dreamers, we knew this was a winning partnership. After the first semester was over, college students asked to take the course again so that they could stay involved with the Dreamers. When a cap was put on how many times a student could register for the course, we knew this was a success. Five years after it began, the course structure is now used in the dance department and both drama and dance are being implemented at our newest site in East Harlem. Many college students return to the program site as a volunteer after taking the course and realizing the impact they can have on the Dreamers.

Impact: What is the impact of your solution to date? Also describe the projected future impact. (If your solution is an idea you can just describe projected future impact.)

The New School has worked with over 60 Dreamers and will begin working with 100 more Dreamers this fall (2013). The course structure is also being used to develop future classes at Hunter College to introduce Hunter Students to the "I Have A Dream" Foundation - NY. Over 100 New School students have experienced the course and approximately 25% of those students have returned as a volunteer in some capacity.

Full Impact Potential: How do you plan on spreading your solution moving forward? (Please consider spread within New York City or beyond, policy reform, how you might get others to replicate/adopt your solution or other mechanisms)

"I Have A Dream" NY is working with other colleges to implement this same type of course collaboration to increase the topic areas that are addressed and increase the amount of college students that can experience learning with "I Have A Dream" - NY. We also share this concept with the 24 other "I Have A Dream" affiliates across the country. Ideally, all CUNY schools will offer courses at "I Have A Dream" - NY sites since the largest proportion of Dreamers eventually attend a CUNY school. We also hope that other affiliates take advantage of our experience and form partnerships with their local colleges.

The Need for your solution: What problem or challenge are you trying to solve?

The American Council on Education, the organization that facilitates the GED, produced a study in 2010 indicating that of the 43% that enrolled in postsecondary education, only 12% completed the program within 6 years; about half left after just one semester.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

The Youth Leadership, Education, and Development (Y-LEAD) program borrows from other academic mentorship program models, including the POSSE Foundation, but targets out of school youth and GED participants and helps them enter local colleges and attain higher graduation rates in NYC.
There are many capable GED students who are not given the proper direction and support. GED students who are likely to do well in a community college setting will be identified and invited to participate in the Y-LEAD program. These cohorts will be given rigorous academic course work to supplement their GED curriculum, critical thinking seminars, college guidance, and leadership training.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities that are involved in your solution. Consider telling us a story about the solution in action and how it creates impact. For idea-stage pitches, consider providing a hypothetical example

Self-exploration: Students will begin self-exploration by thinking through values, beliefs, and identity. This process will begin with students discussing how we choose values/beliefs and what identity is.

Understanding College: During this unit students will become acquainted with the college world. Students will begin by learning the different degree types and understanding how to determine requirements for each degree.

Career Plan: Students will create a career plan and identify benchmarks. Students will also identify the supports they will need and use during the process as well as potential barriers to success. Each student will work with staff to create this long-term plan and assist students in discussing this plan those individuals who will act as their support system.

Leadership Seminars: Students will engage in a variety of leadership activities throughout the term including cultural competence, leadership styles, resolving conflict, creative problem-solving, teamwork, communication, ethics.

The Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem that you are addressing with your solution. And how does your proposed solution differ from or build on these approaches?

We are unaware of any other organizations developing college cohorts at this early stage from the initial GED process through the 2nd year of postsecondary education.

Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you or the person who came up with your proposed solution to get started and/or to see the potential for it to succeed.

I was considering other academic mentorship models and saw unfulfilled gaps. It is not enough to focus on leaders in high school and send them away to out-of-state 4-year universities without additional funding outside of tuition and textbooks.

What those models did not address was the need for support of more at-risk youth and GED students, including local community based partnerships and local solutions that will allow youth to receive academic guidance, mentorship, and a peer support team.

The Y-LEAD models address the issue in NYC with a local solution and partnership with those who care and know the most about the GED students they are already serving.

Impact: What is the impact of your solution to date? Also describe the projected future impact. (If your solution is an idea you can just describe projected future impact.)

The program has not launched

Full Impact Potential: How do you plan on spreading your solution moving forward? (Please consider spread within New York City or beyond, policy reform, how you might get others to replicate/adopt your solution or other mechanisms)

The potential is for this to eventually become a citywide partnership between CUNY and other participating postsecondary schools, including 4-year colleges, linked with community based organizations to increase the graduation rates of at-risk youth.

The Need for your solution: What problem or challenge are you trying to solve?

Approximately 100 words left (800 characters). The problem I am trying to solve is the lack of financial literacy in todays world. I am looking to increase financial literacy education amongst teens/tweens, high school students, college students, military/reserves and adults. The primary target age will be 16-24 years of age. Financial literacy will include providing knowledge/information in money & banking, budgeting, entrepreneurship, small business management, credit, real estate, mentorship and an overview of financial aid (grants, loans etc...) for potential college students.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

Approximately 125 words left (1000 characters). The solution is to provide services in financial literacy in addition to formal education because they go hand and hand. Start with the teens/tweens and familarize them with the banks and the processes. Show them the steps on starting their own bank accounts and start accounts for them. Services can be provided in a series of workshops/ seminars at junior high schools, high schools, colleges, and at home if need be. This must become a priority right now. Becoming more financially literate will reduce the amount of individuals and families losing their homes (homelessness), increase the awareness of young business startups/entrepreneurs becoming self-employed.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities that are involved in your solution. Consider telling us a story about the solution in action and how it creates impact. For idea-stage pitches, consider providing a hypothetical example

Approximately 200 words left (1600 characters). My solution on providing services conducting workshops/ seminars in financial literacy information/knowledge on the initial startup of a business and the documentation needed for an official business. There will be an overview of a business plan to start a business provided at the end of the seminars/workshops as well as related handout material so it can be used as a guide later on by each individual. There will be copies of a joint venture agreement provided at the end of the seminars/workshops to provide a better idea of a joint venture(JV), which is prevalent in the music business today and many other businesses. This example will give potential young professionals the ability to become better prepared for the all industries on a business level before entering. Another solution is more students will graduate high school and at least have bank accounts. There is an alarming number of adults that don't even have bank accounts. My solution is show them the steps early on by opening up their own bank accounts.

The Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem that you are addressing with your solution. And how does your proposed solution differ from or build on these approaches?

Approximately 100 words left (800 characters).Ryan Mack of Optimum Capital Management
My solution is very similar to his nevertheless, I would like to have more of a school related presence that is independently providing needed services to junior high schools, high schools, prep schools along with colleges and universities. I will relate a lot of my individual information provided based on the grade and stage of life that the group or individuals are currently in so it is more relatable to them. Not just general information.

Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you or the person who came up with your proposed solution to get started and/or to see the potential for it to succeed.

Approximately 125 words left (1000 characters). My first seminar/workshop that I conducted was in a small auditorium and it was a hugh success. Information was being received in a great way and relevant questions led to dialogue. At the end of seminar, over 15 individuals had personal questions that related to businesses and entrepreneurship along with college related advice they can use for themselves. I knew there was a great need that required attention.

Impact: What is the impact of your solution to date? Also describe the projected future impact. (If your solution is an idea you can just describe projected future impact.)

Approximately 200 words left (1600 characters). My solution will impact teens/tweens, junior high school, high school, college students , military/reserves and adults. Currently, I have mainly impacted the 16-24 year old demographic (high school, college) with the future impact become greater and greater each day.

Full Impact Potential: How do you plan on spreading your solution moving forward? (Please consider spread within New York City or beyond, policy reform, how you might get others to replicate/adopt your solution or other mechanisms)

I would like to have my financial literacy program all over the 5 boros in as many schools as possible. CUNY colleges and universities all across the world. HBCUs, SUNY, private, and public colleges and universities. It has been successful in one, and I will kept using the similiar blueprint for others. Also, I would like to add some of my financial literacy concepts/principles to college and universities to their academic affairs area and be a Consultant to colleges and universities in the area of financial literacy.

Children nowadays are used to industrial processed food, which is attractive, heavily marketed, and easily found, This affects children's senses and health (e.g. high sugar intake leads to diabetes).
As most modern food relies heavily on monoculture planting, it also affects the environment, threatening local plants and the knowledge about potential for human (e.g. medicinal properties) and environment (e.g. capacity to hold soil erosion).

Solution

Food fairy and the wild plant explorer is a comprehensive curriculum to educate children about food, from its source to its taste. Using fun method, children learn about local food ingredients in their surrounding environment.

Using their all senses children were introduced to both cultivated and wild plants: the look, smell, taste, and touch. This is to re-sensitize their senses from strong flavor of industrial processed food and make them fully aware of what they eat.

Furthermore, as they explore the place where the plants grow, children learn about the relation between local food and biodiversity. This develops their awareness of conservation and its importance for their health and environment.

Example

Our regular program usually consists of 8 visits within 4 months to explore food, from its source to its taste.

First we introduce the look and taste of various edible plants (roots, leaves, fruit). We also have the children closed their eyes and differentiate the smell and taste of various ingredients. This way we "train" them to sensitize all senses and get deeper understanding of what they eat. First they seem disgusted but over time their curiosity grows.

We also take them exploring the river, field, or forest nearby to learn about bio-diversity and many alternatives of food ingredients aside from ones available in the market. We then pick some local plants, like bluntas, simbukan, or papaya, and together make snacks or drinks.

Impact

We started regular program with 4 schools (kindergarten and primary school), 2 in urban and 2 in rural area, total number of children involved about 200. Aside from that we also have non-regular program by request.

Most children in the beginning find difficulties, e.g. to recognize some smell, to accept bitter or sour taste. But after a while, they regain sensitivity of their senses and pay more attention to the food they eat. Children also start to think critically and able to decide what they want to eat or not.
We have also worked with rural mothers to create local plant seed bank. Thus children will learn and apply their knowledge both at home and at school.

In the future, we envision children to have a deep understanding about food system and able to make wise decision about what they eat against long term personal, local, and global impact .

Marketplace

Slow Food International has developed material about taste education. We collaborate with them in using the materials and adjust the contents to emphasize local food and biodiversity conservation.

Some youth farmer group, food security office, local women organization, agriculture government agency, research and academic institute are doing works to reintroduce the use of wild plants. We collaborate with them in sharing the information as our education materials.

Sustainability Plan

Previously we have been working on edible wild plants with village women group. Now they have food products derived from edible wild plants and eco-tourism package to introduce the edible wild plants in the environment and how to cook it into attractive food. We develop sales partnership and profit sharing with this group to sustain funding.

We also apply for grants related to conservation, education, and social innovation.

Founding Story

During a school visit, we found that urban children don't know that rice came from paddy, or how to differentiate banana tree and cotton tree. Rural children also cannot differentiate herbs and spices. This shows their low knowledge about the food they consume and the process behind. No transfer of knowledge between parents and children about local food culture.

With the global food invasion, local food is left behind. Thus local food culture is threatened, as also local biodiversity. A striking example: picking wild plants as food is considered outlandish against buying food in market.

So we try to educate children to build the knowledge about local food, develop healthy diet, and lead them to take part in environment conservation.

The Need for your solution: What problem or challenge are you trying to solve?

At-risk NYC youth in under-served communities are continuing to fall to the wayside of society; young black and Latino men growing up in under-served areas are particularly vulnerable to being pinned as “troubled youth”. These individuals get pushed onto paths in life that may not be a reflection of their abilities, their empathy, and their potential contribution to their communities. CITYarts’ programs work to expose youth to diverse perspectives and new opportunities; to open their eyes to the world of potential that is waiting for them, believing that when kids create, they do not destroy.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

CITYarts is determined to fight for the future success of these youth through public art, collaboration, and creativity. CITYarts’ projects are a combination of arts education and community development. We think that “when kids create, they do not destroy”, so by involving them in Community Mural projects that foster pride in community spaces and teach them the value of teamwork, the groups of young people we've worked with avoid a less productive path in life. Our Community Identity Program is a neighborhood revitalization program that addresses social issues through site specific works bringing local professional artists, youth, families and community members together to collaborate on the creation of art for their neighborhood.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities that are involved in your solution. Consider telling us a story about the solution in action and how it creates impact. For idea-stage pitches, consider providing a hypothetical example

In 2011, the Polo Grounds Community Center Project began with workshops in which participating youth were given time to paint and draw their ideas about peace, kindness, respect -themes of the planned mural. The mural was later painted by the kids, members of the community, and professional artist, Tova Snyder. Professor of Toy Design at NYU, Assaf Eshet, was invited to teach two workshops for a group of students. During these workshops, kids learned about sustainability by creating toy cars from recycled materials. After the creation, participants cheered each other on as each car raced from the starting line. After the completion of the Polo Grounds Community Center, one young boy said he felt like he made history and that he would be proud to tell his children he had been a part of the community’s effort. Another participant said he appreciated the process of the mural project because “we need art in our lives so we can dream, imagine, and wonder”. These projects give underprivileged kids a sense of empowerment that they may not otherwise have and, while the future impact of this may be difficult to measure, we can certainly assume that it's significant.

The Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem that you are addressing with your solution. And how does your proposed solution differ from or build on these approaches?

The 92nd Street Y, located on the upper east side of Manhattan, does some similar work with at-risk youth. Their program, however, focuses more on working with individuals who are more advanced in their talents. CITYarts works with children and youth of under-served communities, but of all artistic abilities. There are no other requirements for participation other than a parent-signed permission form and a copyright waiver form. The workshops provide individuals with entirely new ideas they may not otherwise have access to. They are incredibly educational, and they are free.

Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you or the person who came up with your proposed solution to get started and/or to see the potential for it to succeed.

Post 9/11 in New York, the kids in our projects asked “why are they doing this to us?”. That was one of the many “Aha” moments that I continually experience as the Executive and Creative Director at CITYarts. Every “Aha!” moment that comes my way motivates me to create new ways children and youth can express and understand themselves and others through art and community building. My desire is to engage children and youth in positive, creative art projects that motivate them to shape their individual futures and to transform their communities for the better. While many of our projects are focused on a younger age group, we are always looking at how we can branch out to affect more of our local youth.

Impact: What is the impact of your solution to date? Also describe the projected future impact. (If your solution is an idea you can just describe projected future impact.)

Over decades of mural creation in New York City, a majority of the murals are still in existence and have never been vandalized. Their permanence allows youth to carry feelings of pride with them over many years, and possibly for their entire lives as they continue to revisit the site of their creation. While our solution doesn't seek to directly set individuals up with an employment opportunity, our programs allow for a fundamental shift in the understanding of what is possible. The projects expose kids to feelings of hope; help them to believe that they can achieve their dreams and that the world is full of possibilities. This means a more healthy youth, focused on academic and creative production and committed to their local community.

Full Impact Potential: How do you plan on spreading your solution moving forward? (Please consider spread within New York City or beyond, policy reform, how you might get others to replicate/adopt your solution or other mechanisms)

We plan to continue to add to preexisting programs, while simultaneously developing some of our newer programs. CITYarts has multiple projects throughout New York City operating at the same time. Each project is unique and geared toward a certain community and cause. Between publicity, word of mouth, and our murals that speak for themselves, CITYarts is steadily busy with new projects. Our efforts are not limited to New York City; CITYarts has collaborated with global artists to create Peace Murals worldwide, along with our ongoing Pieces for Peace Project. Pieces for Peace works to build bridges of cultural understanding by connecting youth from around the world with each other and with society as a whole through the creation of art.

Elevator Pitch

Aquaponics. This is about a new way.It is a steadfast belief that by producing pesticide free, hormone and GMO free, organic fruits ,fish and vegetables locally at competitive prices we can end food deserts, employ local residents and educate children and adults on a healthier way of living. Join Us

Problem

Health: Chronic ailments like Heart Disease, Diabetes,
Obesity and Stroke. In the African American community these ailments are far too common and are the leading causes of death in some age groups.
Unemployment: Certain communities in DC have unemployment numbers that are more twice the national average.
Undeveloped or derelict land:DC has a large number of undeveloped or under utilized spaces that need profitable low investment aplications.

Solution

Aquaponic Farming brings a lucrative industry into depressed communities and offers residents with little or no education a pathway to economic security. For youth, single mothers and returned citizens Aquaponic Farming is a vital bridge into the workforce. By employing these “hard to hire” residents we can begin to change the economic landscape in Wards 5, 7 and 8.
Locally grown means less pollution. Aquaponic gardening cuts out the “middle man” when it comes to fresh produce. By avoiding the costly shipping can cut costs and pollution.
Growing healthy Communities s one of the foundational tenets of Freedom Farms. We will end food deserts and change eating habits

Example

An Oasis In The Desert The The US Department of Agriculture reports that about 18,000 D.C. residents live in food deserts, where there are also high concentrations of children. In one such food desert, 39 percent of residents are children. By providing fresh healthy local food choices to these underserved populations we can improve health outcomes for children and adults. This is about providing access to residents who have not been able to find or afford locally grown fresh produce.

Impact

Growing healthy Communities is one of the foundational tenets of Freedom Farms. Our produce will not only grace the tables of high end restaurants in the District of Columbia, it will also grace the cafeteria tables of DC public Schools both charter and traditional. We have the opportunity to become a national model for putting locally sourced organic produce on the plates of public school students in school and in their homes. Within 90 days of opening our doors we will be able to begin food deliveries.

Marketplace

Not only organic but local. In an industry where organic equals dollar
signs and freshness equals desirability our business model serves a growing need for fresh locally grown organic fruits and vegetables. With relatively low overhead and high production output, Freedom Farms will become the source for high end produce not only for elite restaurateurs but also local school children and seniors. This mix of public and private revenue streams will defer any unexpected market fluctuations.

Sustainability Plan

Invest in the Future The Organic food market is growing. That means there is a demand that must be met. Our business model meets that need with an eco friendly community building system that produces significant profits and is scalable in order to meet demand. With DC's population growing and food instability nationwide growing as well, commercial aquaponic farming is the future of production for urban communities.

Founding Story

When I walk through my city I see people looking for a chance. A chance for a job, a chance for an education, a chance for a better life. The systems that are supposed to work together to create those chances are often out of sync and provide less than ideal results. So I endeavored to find a way to provide residents with a catalyst for change. I looked at the major issues as I saw them; unemployment, unheathy living and lack of an interest in education. I looked at these problems and began to search for solutions that would address all three. I settled on Commercial Aquaponics because it is in fact a lesson on how systems can work together to produce a desired outcome. Not only in terms of plants and fish, but also in residents lives.

Elevator Pitch

Num Nums are organic freeze dried fruits and veggies for children. By freeze drying fruits and veggies at their peak freshness vitamins and minerals are retained. They are shelf stable thus able to get healthy foods to areas that would not have access to healthy nutrient dense foods.

Problem

In many areas of the United States fresh fruits and veggies are hard to come by. In the rural areas of my state some towns have to drive up to 100 miles to get to fresh food, especially on the Indian Reservations. These populations are at higher risk for diabetes and other illnesses due to the lack of fresh food and education. Sadly more often than not children in these areas get far less than the minimum 5 servings of fruits and veggies per day.

Solution

Num Nums Freeze dried foods would create a lightweight foods that have a 5 year shelf life with nearly all the vitamins fresh foods have and make them available to inner city, reservation, and rural children that lack the access to fresh healthy foods. We would create an education program designed to teach about why fresh fruits and veggies are so important to the health and development of a child. and distribute and donate some Num Num's to areas of our country, like Native American Reservations, inner cities, and rural towns where its hard for babies and kids to get healthy foods. Our goal is to donate a package of Num Nums for Every Package sold.

Example

In many areas of the United States fresh fruits and veggies are hard to come by. In the rural areas of my state some towns have to drive up to 100 miles to get to fresh food, especially on the Indian Reservations. These populations are at higher risk for diabetes and other illnesses due to the lack of fresh food and education. Sadly more often than not children in these areas get far less than the minimum 5 servings of fruits and veggies per day, sometimes the only veggies being tomatoes in their ketchup and potatoes in their french fries.
NumNums could be added to a bowl of oatmeal to make it more nutritious, or a smoothie for and added boost.

Impact

On a trip recently we stopped at a grocery store on a reservation and noticed that the fresh produce section was not only tiny, but the fruits and veggies were poor quality and old. I saw shopping cart after shopping cart go by me filled with soda, chips, cookies and other junk foods. Grocery stores in rural areas a often at the end of delivery routes receiving the oldest produce at high costs.

A study, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2578771/
said HHowever, during the last few decades spatial disparities in access to retail fresh F&Vs have increased considerably. Supermarkets and grocery stores with produce departments are much less likely to be found in economically disadvantaged minority neighborhoods than in middle-class or affluent.Residents in remote, rural communities also face barriers to obtaining retail fresh fruits and veggies.

Marketplace

There are small local movements to make some changes, but there is a lack on a national widely distributed way.

Num Nums are freeze dried and shelf stable they allow a widespread distribution to smaller more rural areas that lack distribution channels.

Sustainability Plan

By selling our products in Stores such as Whole Foods to those that are better able to afford the costs, we will use those funds to offset funds needed to supply lower income areas. It will be self sustaining in its ability to donate a package of food for each bought through tax incentives as well.

Elevator Pitch

B Foods exists to change the way we eat and think about food. By revealing the impact of our consumer choices through hands-on experiences, we aim to raise awarness about how food is produced, transported and cooked, and how this affects our own health and the planet's future sustainability.

Problem

As humans keep settling in cities, we keep detaching ourselves from nature, the natural cycles of farming and the magic of growing food. It is becoming increasingly difficult to know where our food is coming from, and which are the best choices we need to make to benefit our health and the environment. Food labeling as we know it lacks the clarity to provide transparent information which increases the overall problem of understanding what we eat.

Solution

Raising awareness about where our food comes from, what it takes to get from farm to table, and what goes in it in this process, is fundamental to transform the way we eat. This awareness should come in the form of practical education in schools, teaching our children to read and understand Nutritional Fact labels, how to recognize hidden sugars and excess salt in the products bought, and rediscovering the natural tastes of fruit and vegetables by learning how to cook with them. This practical lessons can also be extensive to adults, in an attempt to change the eating habits of the whole family, and workplace, in order to reduce obesity and overweight rates, which Chile currently shows at 25% and 67% respectively.

Example

When we talk about impacting school children we have developed two workshops applicable to a learning environment. The first one has to do with reading and understanding the nutritional information on labels, as a way of giving young children an effective tool to self determine the level of nutrients in their food. The second one relates to the rediscovery of natural food through cooking, by imparting cooking classes from early ages at school. Both solutions make a difference in the way these children will relate to food at young age and as future adults, bringing more consciousness into their choices at the supermarket, and influencing their families and peers in the same trend of sustainable consumption.

Impact

Ignorance about the food system in Chile is causing a twofold problem. On one hand, obesity rates are rapidly increasing because people do not understand the poor quality of the food they are eating. And on the other hand, people do not know what are the impacts of their food choices beyond just price in the supermarket till. The only way to change the current patterns of consumption in the food industry to more sustainable practices, is through education, raising awareness, and creating practical instances where people can learn and see the difference with their own eyes. Transparency and information are key elements to achieve this, and we believe that B Foods is the right path to do so. Currently there is no one doing this work in Chile, and it is something that will certainly help to shape the nutritional trends of the future.

Marketplace

Currently there is a government program called "Elige Vivir Sano" (Choose to live healthy), focused on signaling what are the best foods that can be eaten in order to attain good health. However, this program does not address the other issues we wish to solve, like the problems around information transparency on labels, the problems with the food supply, the impacts on the environment of our consumer choices and how this all relates to good health as well, but on a more global scale, where the environment and the ethics of food production are also involved in the solution.

Sustainability Plan

Practical classes and workshops in schools, universities.
Experiential events for companies.
Paid for research and consultancy projects.
Consultancy for the food industry on how to improve their practices.
B Foods pratical lab, which sells food products developed under the same principles we teach.

Founding Story

Cooking has always been a huge passion for me, and I for years I have thought of ways to add value to the food I prepare beyond taste. I have wanted to tell stories through food, by engaging the producers, by highlighting how the food has been cultivated and processed, and by how it goes from farm to table. However, I find myself finding it harder everyday to do so, due to the lack of information about where food comes from. I want to change this, and I want to be able to make that knowledge available for everybody, specially for younger generations that will have the chance to continue the change we have started for them. Food is part of our basic needs, but not just any food; soul food, ethical and sustainable in time.

This Entry is about (Issues)

Elevator Pitch

The youth of today are the leaders and changers of tomorrow. If we have a problem today, we can work to change it now but for a sustainable impact, we have to prepare Malawi's farmers and leaders of tomorrow. Education must enable these teenagers to value their world and provide a healthy future.

Problem

Everyone in Malawi grows maize anywhere they can! However, traditional methods do not yield the best crops and the flour only provides limited nutrition for the nation. Change is sniffled due to a lack of education as many teachers have not been upgraded to learn about new farming methods and healthy eating and living is only broached upon in the current curriculum. The climate and seasons are changing and other food sources must be encouraged.

Solution

Our vision is to create a bank of resources mapped to the Malawi Agriculture Syllabus that highlight good farming practices, balance nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Most students are expected to study this subject at secondary school. The resources would be electronic with animations and videos created in-country by a dedicated team of staff over two years. There would be sixty lessons of content supported by lesson plans and activities.
Resources alone are not sufficient to make a difference and therefore we would distribute these on our learning network website and via USB/CD/DVD to schools at professional development sessions for Agricultural Teachers. The teachers would be empowered and resourced to train Malawi's Youth of today.

Example

Jacaranda School for Orphans had a small number of computers until last August. In September 2012, they received 20 laptops donated by Microsoft as part of the MLP Project and their computers were networked and linked our learning intranet. The computers were only used for learning to type before the new connection but now they are able to access a range of resources.
In a recent visit, We gave them access to interactive games to learn English from the British Council and electronic books donated by Polarfish Interactive and the students started using the computers to learn other things than ICT. The MLP platform can now give them access to resources for a range of subjects related to the Malawi curriculum.

Impact

So far, we have been able to create a small network of ten schools which have been connected but we have not yet been able to provide the training and support levels that we want to provide or create the custom learning content that will impact Malawi.

Over 3 years, we aim to employ and train a team of Malawians, one project manager, a network manager and one training/support worker for every twenty schools. This will provide training and quality resources to a minimum of 2000 teachers in 200 schools with over 400,000 students, empowering girls & boys.

We aim to create an electronic curriculum that provides sets of lessons for the full range of MSCE subjects, including Agriculture, Nutrition and Healthy Living. Not only will these resources be available to connected schools but can be distributed on USB, CD and DVD to be used by teachers, students and adults at learning centres.

Marketplace

In Malawi, there are a few charities and organizations who provide computers for schools, including Computers for Malawian Schools and organisations such as Rotary. There are also many ICT firms but very little curriculum development.

MLP is different: Our slogan is Connect > Communicate > Collaborate. With partners, we connect schools, install equipment and develop learning tools. However, we empower teachers and students with training + support visits and develop resources in partnership with teachers to match the curriculum of Malawi. We link ICT classrooms to form a learning network!

Sustainability Plan

MLP is applying for grants to create resources as well as establish the larger project. We aim to become sustainable by expanding our teacher training, ICT support and supply services, web and e-mail services and by developing further resources and solutions with partners that can be sold to the private school sector. By Year 4, we plan to have a 100% Malawian staff with a wide product base aimed at Education.

Founding Story

I have been a teacher for thirteen years and have always been passionate about Africa and education. Although I had been to South Africa a number of times, I had not thought working in Malawi let alone developing a project here! However, I applied for job at Saint Andrew's and Gordon Benbow, the headteacher invited me to come to SAIntS to lead ICT and Community.

In a number of 'Divinely appointed' meetings, a partnership between SAIntS, Access Communications, IT Schools Africa and Microsoft was formed as a pilot in 2011. Teachers want the best for their students but why should each teacher plan alone? Why not work together and create a learning network where we 'Connect > Communicate > Collaborate?' So the next phase of MLP begins!

Where do you ensure the availability of nutrients?

Nutrient-rich farming, Human wellness and vitality.

If you had greater capacity, which additional sectors would you like your solution to target - either through expansion, partnership, or thought exchange?

Healthy environments, Full nourishment foods.

How specifically would this added capacity help you improve the quality, efficiency, or sustainability of your existing product or service?

With great capacity, we would be able to expand the number of staff involved, create more resources, improve quality by employing more talented individuals and enhance the level of training for teachers that we could offer. The link with the Ministry of Education that we are developing would enable us to work closely with the government in the development of the future curriculum, enhancing the focus on balanced nutrition and engaging adult learners rather than simply focusing on Malawi's future farmers.

Idea (poised to launch)

Elevator Pitch

Balancers trying to reduce hunger crisis, are developing a food-o-social website cum application which would elaborate the concept of social inclusion. We are availing an opportunity to the people, to be recognized for the efforts they have put with innovative calorie donation cum execution.

Problem

The unbalanced state of our society, the deteriorating condition of nourishment, unequal distribution of resources and lack of awareness amongst the masses motivated us, to work for the society, for the sake of people, for the social welfare. The website-cum-application will generate awareness and provide practical solutions to the issues, the ones we face today.Providing practical solutions to deal with the epidemic obese and undernourishment.

Solution

Food|booK focuses on generating, operating and spreading solutions by creating a Global Alliance. This leads to the ultimate goal of uprooting the status-quo and thereby promoting an idea to feed a massive population of 9 billion.
-To make people aware and awaken their consciousness.
-To hand out practical solutions by connecting people.
-Accounting and recognizing people's efforts by Socializing Food Credits.
-To create a balanced calorie distribution system.
-Cartel NGO's for channelizing of funds and promote transparency.

Example

If I don't feel like eating today, what i have to do is: Login in to the Food|booK application/website and can donate that particular meal or calories that i was about to consume to people in any of the continent (struck by undernourishment). Food|booK simplifies the concept of the donation and tries to carry it forward in terms of calories. Through this, we are also letting people know how much calories they are consuming and donating. A real-time display of cumulative calories donated and how many lives saved so far are also featured on our platform.

Impact

• Age Group
➢ To connect people of age group 15-42, as they are more likely to be on social networking and believe in change.
• Building Audience
➢ Through the means of:-
• Twitter
• Tumblr page
• Fb page
• Promotional videos
• Collaboration with NGOs and Corporates

The innovative idea behind donation is not to feed the hungry, but it’s to uplift their status, from those poor conditions, thus, empowering poor societies. This leads to the ultimate goal of uprooting the status-quo and thereby promoting an idea to feed a massive population of 9 billion.

Marketplace

Food|booK provides the chance to be the philanthropist by even doing a bit, and promotes the efforts of one. It depends on the efforts of the people. It even highlights the projects which promote green thinking and preserves environment.

Sustainability Plan

It will be self sustained project, as it depends on the donations made by the people for the others. It provides a sit-at-home-donation opportunity to people.

Founding Story

As any idea gets its roots from another idea, to us that another idea was the Thought For Food Challenge’13. One pleasant morning, we all were surfing on Google, starting with as simple as Food wastage to as complicated as Sustainable Food Systems, etc; and after going through all the leading websites like fao, wfp, etc and wonderful blogs by different enthusiasts, we came across simple questions-Why do I have to go through various websites working for the same vital issues? Why aren’t some exploding-ly interesting blogs not able to reach out to people they should have? When I am ready to help, why do I have limited resources and options? Then we thought, are we capable enough to club? And the answer came YES, WHY NOT!

Elevator Pitch

The world is presently over-dependent on a few plant species. On the other hand, there are more than 7,000 plant species from the wild that could be eaten. This has lead into malnutrition problem that people face around the world. Mantasa works with edible wild plants to fight malnutrition.

Problem

Malnutrition is a complex problem hence need to be tackled in a holistic way. Malnutrition from lacking of vitamins and minerals are still affecting the world today, including Indonesia, and it has long-ranging effects on health, learning ability and productivity. Indonesia still suffer from micronutrient deficiency and this actually can be tackled with an easy and cheap way, using local resources and traditional knowledge.

Solution

Edible wild plants, although sounds very specific, actually covered many issues. Each plant brings its own wisdom and function, yet little consideration have been put into these plants and consider them as useless. Edible wild plants are nutritious and easy to find everywhere and locally and culturally accepted. Eating edible wild plants also helps to conserve biodiversity and traditional knowledge of local people. We will collecting and documenting traditional knowledge related to edible wild plants processing as well as educate people to increase their appreciation on edible wild plants and then willing to use them back in their daily life.

Example

A group of village mother in Galengdowo village has long believe that getting food from market or shop is the only way to get nutritious foods for their family. Although this village is surrounded with forest and mountain, the knowledge about utilizing plants for food is almost gone for many reasons, one of it is prestige. Collecting plants from the wild for food is considered as an activity for the poor. Another reason is they believe that industrial foods offered them so much nutrients they need thanks to media advertisement. Mantasa enter this village and present wild plant's nutrient facts and also encourage the women to experiment with edible wild plants to make them into attractive foods that the children like. And it was successful.

Impact

Impact to date: the sense of pride from local people about their local food, value added to edible wild plants from turning it into attractive food for everyone, media coverage also encourage local people to dig out more their local resources hence this has helped the biodiversity conservation and traditional knowledge are regained.
Future impact (quantitative): 1,000 edible wild plants identified from around Indonesia complete with its information about how local people use it and its nutrition facts. 200 wild food garden are set up as an educational means, information center as well as seed garden. And 5,000 from around Indonesia will be sharing with each other about their wisdom and knowledge about edible wild plants around them.
Future impact (quantitative): Increase awareness about the value of nature and traditional wisdom and also sense of pride of their food culture.

Marketplace

Edible wild plants is not really an issue to look up to address malnutrition, but in the last 5 years some international movement talking about edible wild plants has grown and I've joined all the international meeting about this since I was a university student. What makes us different is because we make a holistic approach, laboratorium research to search for nutritional content, ethnobotany research to dig out traditional knowledge about plants and also education. We also do participatory research to empower people so they have power over their own knowledge and resources.

Sustainability Plan

People participation is always the main thing we want to emphasize in our solution. We give support in the form of information, trainings and workshops. Of course we need another support to organize trainings and workshops and we got it from grants, but we also have a shop where we sell food products made of edible wild plants by village women and also some merchandise, and so far it's been 2 years since we received last grant and we still exist.

Founding Story

In 2002 I was doing my research project for my thesis. I studied Food and Nutrition Technology and I wanted something different to research other than industrial foods. After reading so many journals I found an old book about plants in Indonesia wrote by a Dutch. In that book I was amazed by diversity of plants that local people's use to feed themselves. Each community in each island have their own way to process some plants into food. I decided to research about mangrove based on Papuan traditional knowledge processing mangrove seeds for their staple food. Although I got some rejection from my lecturer and bad mark for that research, my passion had grown to search more about other plants and dig out their potential to combat malnutrition.

Select the stage that best applies to your venture

Idea (you're ready to start)

This Entry is about (Issues)

Summary: What specific issue or problem does your Venture address?

13.5 million Americans reside in areas with low access to fresh, affordable food, known as food deserts. The USDA defines these areas as census tracts where more than 33% of the population lives one mile or more from a major grocery store. In St. Louis, 14,000 children and 52,000 adults live in food deserts. The percentage of our city’s population living in a food desert if 233% higher than the national average. We have identified four central barriers to equitable food access: physical access, education about healthy eating, economic constraints, and inhibited community awareness about this issue.

Misson Statement: What will your venture do?

St. Louis MetroMarket seeks to deploy a city bus modified into a one-aisle grocery store. Primary offerings include fresh, naturally grown fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy, and other staple foods. We are not simply aiming to alleviate symptoms of food deserts but rather affect meaningful behavioral change by breaking down the four barriers that perpetuate food insecurity.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

With our mobile farmers' market, we seek to couple significant social impact with innovative financial sustainability. Using city bus modified as a walk-through store, we will sell and distribute locally sourced produce and staple goods to predetermined stops in St. Louis. The majority of our revenue will come not only from product sales, but also from membership sales. We will then reinvest in both subsidies for low-income members and in purchasing an additional 5 vehicles to expand to all 18 food deserts in St. Louis city within 5 years. We will couple increased access with practical lessons about meal planning, food preparation and nutrition.

The Community: Define the community that you work on behalf of. What population is affected? Are there other organizations working in this space?

Our central focus involves serving individuals who live in areas with low access to healthy, affordable food. In St. Louis, individuals living in these areas tend to have lower income and reduced mobility. Often, the nutritional value of their food is of less concern than simply securing food. In St. Louis, the population that we wish to serve is predominantly African American. A number of St. Louis organizations work to support these populations; however, the groups addressing food-related issues are working on hunger relief. We hope to supplement these existing efforts by focusing on access to healthy and affordable food.

Founding Story: What inspired your venture? Why?

Co-founder Tej Azad was discussing the high rates of obesity and diabetes with his father. Unlike his father, Tej believed that macroscopic, structural issues contributed to these rates, in addition to any potential cultural or behavioral influences. That same night, Tej watched a special on “food deserts” on 60 minutes. A unique program, a Chicago-based mobile farmer’s market called Fresh Moves was profiled. From that point on, Tej has explored ways in which to bring a similar model to St. Louis.

Define your Venture in 1-2 short sentences

Reinventing the way food is accessed in low-income areas of St. Louis. The St. Louis MetroMarket will create a presence in all 15 St. Louis food deserts within 5 years of launching.

Goals

了解详情↑ 隐藏↑ 隐藏

What do you want to accomplish in your first year?

In the first year, we wish to organize a few pilot programs to test specific assumptions in the model. Specifically, we hope to identify a potential food desert market stop. Even without the bus, we will test whether 1) The community is interested in purchasing our food 2)How effective this specific stop as a distribution point. A second pilot program is to test the corporate memberships aspect of our model.

Set your first goal or milestone for your Venture Team in the next 6 months that will bring you to your vision

Run the first pilot - food desert sales

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach this goal

任务 1

Identify a strong community partner

任务 2

Determine how to most effectively structure the pilot

任务 3

Secure funding necessary to run the pilot

Set a second goal or milestone for your Venture Team in the next 6 months that will bring you to your vision

Run the second pilot - corporate sales

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach this goal

任务 1

Find contacts with local corporations

任务 2

Determine what they require for us to sell to their employees

任务 3

Execute pilot

Set a third goal or milestone for your Venture Team in the next 6 months that will bring you to your vision

Obtain city bus and organize necessary modifications

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach this goal

任务 1

Foster St. Louis government contacts

任务 2

Identify architect/engineers to design the vehicle

任务 3

Obtain bus and have modifications applied

影响

了解详情↑ 隐藏↑ 隐藏

How will your Venture define success in the short term (1-12 months)?

In the next 12 months, we will define success relative to the efficacy of our pilot programs. Specifically, our ability to design, plan, and carry out the programs.

In the long-term (1-3 years)?

After obtaining the vehicle, we have set out specific goals. At the end of year 1 of operations (2 years from now), we should have completed 52,000 total food desert transactions, served 4,000 food desert residents, implemented a 10% subsidy for EBT users. At the end of year 2 (3 years from now), we should have added a second bus, completed 120,000 total food desert transactions, served 8,000 food desert residents, implemented a 15% subsidy for EBT users.

How will you measure success?

We will measure success in terms of the number of food desert transactions, food desert residents served, and the amount of EBT sales we are able to subsidize. Though corporate sales are part of our model, the true focus of our venture is to improve access to food in these chronic low access areas.

可持续性

了解详情↑ 隐藏↑ 隐藏

How will you recruit new members for your venture?

We have strong relationship with the undergraduate community at Washington University in St. Louis and the medical student community at St. Louis University. We will recruit members from these populations. Furthermore, we hope to excite community members as well and plan to draw volunteers and members from here as well

How will you appoint new leaders and transfer leadership when the founding members want to leave the team?

While the venture is young, we will draw new leaders from existing volunteers and supporters. This will allow continuity of mission and vision. Due to our affiliation with both St. Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis, we will have a renewing pool of students to recruit to the venture.

As the venture matures, it is likely that the scale will require full time employees with significant management experience. As we approach this stage, we will work closely with our board to determine potential leaders.

How will you continue your project in 6-months time or once you have spent all of its initial capital?

Our blend of corporate memberships, high-income memberships, and low-income memberships will enable the venture to remain financially sustainable following the front end capital. This is demonstrated in our financial projections.

Explain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?

HIV is a chronic disease requiring unremitting adherence to medication (antiretroviral therapy or “ART”). As the leading health issue confronting people living with HIV (PLWH), non-adherence costs the healthcare system between $500 and 1,500 per month per patient1, a figure much higher than the cost of non-adherence for other chronic diseases.

Multiple factors contribute to poor adherence in HIV: managing a complex regimen, medication side effects, lack of immediate evident benefit from taking daily medication, and lastly, staying positive and motivated to maintain lifelong adherence. One key challenge to ART adherence is the stigma associated with HIV; this can constrain PLWHs’ support networks and willingness to take medication as directed.

Traditional patient-provider relationships and adherence intervention models rely on face-to-face office visits. Relying on infrequent visits and ‘push education,’ these models neither provide ongoing support for the PLWH nor empower them to take proactive ownership of their adherence goals. Current mobile applications that support ART adherence rely on intrusive push reminders, and do not provide a data feedback loop to the provider.

These apps report struggling effectiveness and low uptake due to PLWH disclosure sensitivity, lack of patient retention in consistent care, and technology-only intervention points. In addition, existing apps have failed to demonstrate sustainable, scalable impact for the provider or patient populations, and linking this impact to tangible benefits within the HIV healthcare industry.

Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?

Technology alone cannot solve all of the ‘real and human’ problems that often drive non-adherence in HIV. However, if executed effectively, mobile technology presents a unique opportunity to help transform the traditional patient-provider relationship into an ongoing, confidential, and collaborative relationship as a foundation for increasing ART adherence.
Leveraging mobile technology to create dynamic education opportunities and positive feedback loops can establish the necessary patient empowerment to drive the core behavior change to increase and sustain adherence.

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

The mobile app has not been out on the market as of yet. The alpha stages promise a delivery of a comprehensive solution for HIV patients.

What methods for quantification of social impact are you applying (if at all)?

Could your solution work in other geographies or regions? If so, where?

The application is actually intended for other geographies and we plan on implementing it in the sub Saharan region particularly in suburban regions of Uganda (Kassanda region) as well as Bagamoyo Town, Tanzania.

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

Over the course of the next year we doubt that much impact would be realized because of the developmental stages as well as the enhancements that the product will actually see throughout the course of the year. We are expecting feedback from social groups to help mature the application. Within the course of years 2-3 we expect a high impact socially as well as physically on the patient population utilizing the app.

Divine Solutions

Explain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?

Health is low political issue in India, poor health indicators IMR & MMR are still very high, High burden of Infectious diseases, rapidly Increasing chronic diseases and new emerging diseases like resistant TB, unregulated health care provider, high dominance of private (for-profit) healthcare provider, and very poor or negligible public health infrastructure; In India more than 75% of health care expenditure born by out of pocket lead to more than 30 million people below the poverty line every year, no preventive measures very poor immunization coverage and health literacy; It create the sense of urgency to bring some changes in a way healthcare accessed and delivered in India, I think patient education and delivery of care by innovative way is the key solutions for all this problem. empowerment of patient by providing the useful information to the patient and also working as a catalyst to improve the overall health care delivery is the key to change the behavior of population.

Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?

We think this is very innovative way of tracking health status and taking care of patient by using friendly technologies, actually on front end patient able to see only useful information which is very essential to improve health like tips on diet, information about the trimester, alert for time of medications, doctors visit, diagnostic test due, It's very innovative way of informing people about there health needs and also patient feels somebody is taking care for him

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

MATRUTVA our solution for safe mother and child health it's a application which placed in healthcare organization, information of patient about his/her health status during every visit is recorded using the application. then all this information is stored into our server our back-end team make possible for patient to see the essential information on his mobile or using desktop which has very different front end than the one with healthcare organization, basically our basic aim is to inform patient about what to do or don’t, we introduce patient about the trimesters with very simple and sophisticated manner, we inform her about next visit due, diagnostic test due, about diet, how to take care yourself also we have very interesting module on garbhsanskar, all this mechanism is very simple.

How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?

In India I won’t found this type of technology used for the maternal and child health care services there are some but not focusing on patient education, all those are simple public health solutions like in Gujarat E-Mamta which is actually only for tracking of mother and child health for the health care services, In our MATRUTVA we are addressing the basic issue of patient education and awareness, emergency management .etc. this is advantage we have today but as a entity which is interested in the improving the health of population we will ensure the new innovations and thinking in our future course.

Early Childhood Development - Scaling Reach

Explain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?

At least one in ten children has a developmental disability. Extrapolating from this India has 52 million children with a developmental disability. Ummeed at its Center provides transdisciplinary care for children with developmental disabilities through best practices developed in-house and recognised globally. Each year, Ummeed reaches out to over 1200 children through around 6100 visits through its Center.
The best practices developed by Ummeed also go into development of curricula of training programs which are targeted at building the capacities of community workers of other NGOs and building the capacities of NGOs working with children to address issues around Early Childhood Development and developmental disabilities. Each year, Ummeed serves an additional 25000 children and their families through these training programs imparted to other organisations.

Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?

Ummeed at its Center develops unique best practices which then form the basis of the curricula developed for the capacity building training programs.
In addition Ummeed develops training modules based on the needs of the organisation as assessed by Ummeed. The training modules are exhaustive in nature and comprise of both theory and practicals at the field level.

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

Ummeed at its Center provides transdisciplinary care for children with developmental disabilities through best practices developed in-house and recognised globally.

Ummeed has a team of highly trained and skilled professionals providing care and expertise to Ummeed's activities.

How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?

Ummeed's greatest challenge currently is the immaturity of the market and understanding of the need of early childhood development among organisations working with children and organisations working in the area of disabilities. Ummeed is now developing a competent team to create the necessary environment and build the "market" to be able to scale up its reach in the field of early childhood development.
Ummeed has also developed short term training modules to meet the challenges of manpower stretched organisations who may not be in a position to spare their team for the comprehensive training programs.

Established (past the previous stages and has demonstrated success)

Summary: What specific issue or problem does your Venture address?

My Venture addresses the issue of Autism Spectrum Disorder, which disables children all around the world. The way this problem will be addressed is through many different methods, such as fundraisers and volunteering at schools for children with Autism. Raising money towards Autism research helps, and so does helping individual children with autism. A way to help children with Autism, as I have found, is to use music as therapy for these children. I have played my instrument for children at a school, and it allows them to calm down or even to focus. My efforts have gone further than this, and I have donated iPods which are used for music and for audio clips used for learning. In the future, I look forward to gaining more technological devices to donate such as iPads and other devices.

Misson Statement: What will your venture do?

My venture is geared to help children with Autism in any way possible. It will raise money towards Autism Research, the building of schools, and the supplying of school materials. As well as this, my venture stresses an importance on volunteer work, and it is crucial that I gain volunteers that are willing to help a child with Autism. The musical aspect of my venture will also be important, as I will continue to search for others who are musically inclined to volunteer at schools. As well as volunteering at schools, I will make it a goal to host benefit concerts, and to play at charity events for Autism. Although music is an important part of my venture, it is not the only part, and I also see an importance in allowing children with Autism to receive the best education that they can possibly achieve. I will do this through using raised money to buy supplies, help renovate and build schools, and create the opportunity for new technological advances at this school.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

Ways that my venture will make a difference have a larger scale of impact, and a smaller, more concise scale of impact. What I believe to be the larger scale is the raising of money towards Autism research and the raising of money to benefit schools for children with Autism. These two ideas will be important, for once I raise enough money, I will be able to donate this money to more and more locations, therefore spreading my venture. On a smaller scale, volunteer work will also be one of the activities in my venture. Although volunteering at a school for children with Autism will not raise money to find a cure, it will positively affect the life of the child, who needs as much help as he or she can get when it comes to an education. As I have previously addressed, music will also be an important part of my venture. Whether it is through volunteering musicians visiting nearby schools, or benefit concerts, music is a crucial part of my venture. It allows for the raising of money, but also allows children with Autism to experience music while they are being educated. It is said that music is therapeutic to these children, and it allows them to focus, therefore helping them learn.

The Community: Define your community, local or international, that you will work on behalf of. What population is affected? Are there other organizations working in this space?

Initially, my goal will be to work on behalf of the area around me, and let my venture grow from there. The entire population should be aware of Autism, and by raising money for the cause, I will also be able to spread the world to communities around mine. As these communities become more aware, I am hoping that they will spread their knowledge to others. As this knowledge is spread, my venture will also be spread further, until it has reached a nationwide level. This may be wishful thinking, but I believe that with the help of difference makers around the country, I will be able to accomplish this, especially considering that Autism is an important topic that should be known about by anyone.

Founding Story: What inspired your venture? Why?

The way I first heard about Autism was through a video that was sent to my email. This video affected me, and I thought that with my musical ability and willingness to help, I could make an impact somehow in the community. As I began raising money by playing violin at events, I discovered that there were other ways that I could still help the cause. I began donating the money I had raised to a nearby school, and after speaking with the school, they believed that I should go to the school to play for the children there. Going class to class, I would play music for the children, and I could see how it positively affected them. From that point on I have continued to find other methods of benefitting Autism research, and the education of children with Autism

What is your long-term vision for your Venture?

The long term vision of my Venture is to eventually see my venture spread outside of my community to around the nation. This way, people around the nation will raise awareness for Autism, donate money, and volunteer at schools in their areas. As my Venture spreads, I would also like any others to pitch in with their own ideas for ways to help children with Autism. This way, we will be able to find more and more ways to raise money, volunteer, or do any other activities that may benefit the cause.

Define your company, program, service, or product in 1-2 short sentences

The main goal of this is to allow people in the community to contribute in helping children with Autism, a disorder that affects children all around the world.

Goals

What do you want to accomplish in your first year?

The goal I wish to accomplish in my first year is to raise awareness in my community and hold many fundraisers to gain money for local schools. Another thing I wish to do is to host benefit concerts for Autism. While spreading the word, I also would like to search the community for others who are willing to volunteer at local schools. I don't wish to spread my venture too wide the first year, and I would rather establish a large amount of success locally before venturing out further.

Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact

My milestone will be to raise over 10,000 dollars in fundraising

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your six-month milestone

任务 1

Improve the supplies, classrooms, and technology of local schools for children with Autism

任务 2

Gain a wide population of volunteers

任务 3

Find other difference makers in the community who are willing to advertise my venture.

Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone

Spread my venture outside of my area into other regions of Florida

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your 12-month milestone

任务 1

Find major music personalities that are willing to help in a benefit concert

任务 2

Assist in the building of a new school for children with Autism

任务 3

Prepare to spread my venture nationally

How will your Venture define success in the short term (1-12 months)?

By spreading the word of my venture throughout the State in order to prepare for a longer more difficult phase in which I will expand my venture nationally

In the long-term (1 year?)

By gaining recognition on a national level as an organization that positively effects communities around the nation

How will you measure success?

I will measure success not by the amount of money I raise towards my cause, but by the amount of people which my venture affects. Although it is only aimed towards helping children with Autism, I believe that my venture will allow communities around the nation to come together in order to fight for a common cause.

Why?

I believe that money is important, but should not be the critical point of whether something is successful or not.

Campamento Urbano: modelo franquiciable de atención a niños con sobrepeso y obesidad

Explain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?

Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?

Move This World

请选择最符合您的解决方案的阶段:

发展(从试行步入正轨,并开始扩展)

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.

Move This World (MTW) is a global nonprofit using creative movement as a vehicle to transform conflict, violence and bullying in communities. MTW focuses on empowering individuals with skills to identify emotions within themselves, to be empathetic in their interactions with others, and to act as change agents in their communities. Our hallmark program is an evidence-based curriculum engaging students Pre-K-12 in movement-based activities promoting empathy, diversity appreciation, anger management, and conflict transformation. Using MTW's holistic approach, we engage students, families, educators, administrators, and communities with targeted programs that promote social change through the art of movement. MTW has worked with over 9,000 individuals across 22 cities on four continents.

What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?

In the next year, Move This World's top priority is to hire two full-time leadership positions to help to lead programmatic growth and operational strategy. These full-time positions will provide current staff with the support, resources, and expertise for Move This World to scale and enter new markets. Our second priority is to grow the number of classrooms we have in current program hubs. Thirdly, Move This World would like to pilot its special needs curriculum and identify potential new product lines in the next year.

Your project

Project Support

Need #1

Message & Brand Strategy

Need #2

Peer Benchmarking Analysis

Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!

In February of 2013 Move This World underwent a re-brand to become the organization it is today. Formerly known as Dance 4 Peace, Move This World leadership decided to pursue a re-branding process to find a name that truly articulated our use of innovative practice using creative movement for empathy education. We also wanted to find a name that embodied our growth potential, vision, and mission more fully. While we feel confident that we have found that name in Move This World, we are working to embody the new brand across the organization and realize our growth potential not only through our current curriculum and training programs, but also through new product lines to distinguish ourselves from peers and become the standard among organizations offering innovative empathy education programs.

What three characteristics or qualities do you prioritize in working relationships/partnerships?

1.

Move This World prioritizes flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of partners, customizing programs and arrangements.

2.

Move This World prioritizes open communication between partners and MTW staff, ensuring we are available to partners.

3.

Move This World prioritizes cultural awareness, ensuring our programs are appropriate for diverse contexts.

Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.

Support from American Express will be focused on Move This World as an organization overall in order to maximize the impact of the support. In order to work on our strategic positioning as an organization, we must pursue processes that foster cohesive branding and messaging strategies, and help us situate ourselves in the civil society space in relationship to peer organizations.

Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.

Move This World has worked with outside consultants before, including with consultants who advised us throughout the re-brand process. We have also worked with consultants to evaluate the efficacy and growth potential of Move This World's programs in certain markets. While individual staff members have dedicate some time to considering branding and messaging and a part-time Communications and Strategy Specialist is a crucial member of our team, outside facilitation will prioritize branding and messaging for all staff to ensure consistency and confidence.

Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?

Yes

Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?

Yes

Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?

Yes

影响

Rank your three intended outcomes of this project:

1.

To empower all Move This World staff to speak and write confidently and consistently about the new Move This World brand.

2.

To be internationally recognized as the standard provider of empathy education programs.

3.

To identify and strategize about potential distinct product lines for development under the Move This World umbrella.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

The MTW curriculum transcends countries, socioeconomic differences, languages and cultures; it is being adapted and implemented in diverse communities worldwide. In the fall of 2011, aggregate data MTW collected indicated an 80% increase in student positive empathetic reactions to seeing an isolated peer after exposure to a semester of our programming. When given a situation involving bullying, there was a 48% decrease in violent responses. Survey questions to MTW students testing for appreciation of diversity showed a 15% increase in listening to others, 30% increase in liking group work, and 25% increase in likelihood to try new things. Suspension data in one school declined from 53 incidents to 16, after one semester of Move This World programming in several classrooms.

What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?

Based upon our strategic scaling model and business plan, Move This World will have an annual budget of $1.7 million in five years and will have worked with 55,000 youth and educators. Move This World has already shown success at scaling from one classroom in Bogota, Colombia to serving over 9,000 individuals in 22 cities on four continents. Support from American Express will enable Move This World to take the next step in becoming the standard bearer in innovative empathy education practice. Our programs are already sought after by a diversity of partners, and undergoing a peer benchmarking analysis will empower us to identify growth areas and customize product lines based upon the market need and feedback from partners.
