Problem

Non-profits including charities, especially small-sized organizations, often struggle to make the most out of limited resources. Further, these organizations are often under scrutiny from the Canadian government and public to maintain a low cost-to-revenue ratio. Social Focus Consulting strives to help small sized non-profits, who in turn, improve quality of life (i.e. through social services, education, and health) in the Toronto area.

Solution

Social Focus Consulting uses a business approach to help non-profits run more efficiently. More specifically, we apply business management theory and tools to help non-profits with a) volunteer program enhancement (i.e. through corporate team recruitment, selection, building, and performance management) and b) operations enhancement (i.e. through process mapping, lean production principles, and process improvement). This is an innovative approach as it uses business principles normally applied within the private sector, to the non-profit sector. We collaborate with our clients to produce customized solutions specific to their organizational needs. We recognize the budget limitations of some non-profits, so we provide tiered service levels that make our solutions affordable to any cause that needs it.

Example

In one project I worked on, I created a peer-to-peer learning model that worked just as, if not more, effectively than a graduate student-led learning model. In doing so, I helped New College at the University of Toronto save 47% in program expenditure. This helped the organization serve approximately 100% more undergraduate Life Science students and achieve more impact in personalizing the learning environment. This example demonstrates how organizations can make the most out of its limited resources through innovative operations design.

There are many players in the consulting for non-profits marketplace. Organizations such as KCI Philanthropy, Blakely & Associates, Harvey McKinnon Associates, and others are established in this marketplace and have loyal clients.
