Could you talk a bit more about your idea and how the workshop is structured? I see that there are storytelling sessions - how does the performance get planned and come about?
Up and Over is a performance based, youth motivational group that encourages others, through self empowerment, to overcome obstacles; to not only go “up” their mountains, but to get ”over” them. We do this through our music and sharing of personal stories as well as doing interactive workshops. The workshops are designed to introduce youth to the attitudes, values and skills necessary to give them a strong sense of personal power, purpose and a sense of worth, both of themselves and of others.
Acquiring an identity and establishing self-esteem are two of the biggest obstacles that our youth face. Most youth go through periods when they are unsure of who they truly are which may lead them to question themselves. Through our presentation of personal stories, motivational speaking and performances, we try to appeal to the youth in a way that will be encouraging to them.
We have partnered with a mental health specialist to be the lead facilitator for our workshops. A typical booking of Up and Over would have us do our workshop on one day, and then follow with the performance presentation on another day. During the performance presentation, we do an exercise that further emphasizes the importance of empathy, and to help them think before judging others. We end with an amazing performances by our team!
We are looking to partner with Portland, Oregon Foundations, Corporate Organizations and/or individuals that believe our children are the future. Up and Over has been serving schools and youth organizations since March of 2011.
This past school year the program presented or was involved in workshops to nearly 30 schools and youth organizations in Oregon and Washington states. We have received funding from everyday people in communities throughout the country who believe in raising the bar on education levels. Because of our dedicated supporters, Up and Over was able to reach over 2,000 youth within their first year. It has been an amazing year and we are so excited about what’s to come!
We have grown as we shared our stories with the youth and learned so much about ourselves along the way, we can never repay them!
