About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

We have a very noticeable problem. We need to change the direction of our kids’ futures. Away from increasing obesity, chronic health conditions, and shorter life spans.There are a multitude of fitness and diet programs that are not working. We need to make exercise fun, interesting, exciting, and a habit. The 60 Minute Kids Club Challenge has been implemented in over 38 schools in BC & ON, and is a national campaign, engaging families, and is supported through the schools. A campaign without compliance is not an option. Leading a healthy lifestyle can no longer be optional. We are moving beyond the educational campaigns (what & why) into an activation campaign (what, why & HOW)

The 60MKC is a physical literacy and activation program aimed at creating healthy habits for elementary school aged kids, kindergarten to Grade 6, across Canada. We run 3 60 day challenged from Sept-June, to promote and instill healthy and active lifestyles amongst kids. Through our online tracking and reporting web platform we provide incentives, accountability and follow up to create the ultimate turn key program for preventative health. This program involves all levels of society, families, the kids, teachers/schools and the community. The 60 Minute Kids Club positively instills and influences healthy lifestyle behaviors while being fun and interesting.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Our solution involves tracking 8 essential lifestyle factors for 60 days, 3 times a year; 60 minutes of activity per day, sleep, hydration, reading, decreasing screen time (video games & TV), fruits and vegetables, decreasing sugary food and drinks by eating 5 healthy meals each day, positive thoughts/anti bullying, and breakfast. We provide a complete tool kit to address the "how" in making healthy habits last, versus simply saying what the problem is and why.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Childhood obesity tends to receive reactionary measures. We are providing a proactive solution, the "HOW" by pairing curriculum, tracking and reporting, and a grand final event. This type of engagement, accountability, incentives and follow up create the ultimate TURN KEY program. There is no cost to the participants, no added workload to teachers, is designed to be an initiative that starts at home and reinforced through the schools with defined start & end dates. We have multiple incentives for kids to participate, short and long term, that include relevant prizes to support them in their quest to stay active every day. A key aspect of our program is the accountability. Through a safe on line tracking tool we are able to provide consistent follow up with teachers, students & parents.

Founding Story

Having coached youth sports at the community level for over a decade, and being asked by parents if we could ‘speak to their kids’ it became clear that physical literacy in young age groups lacked attention and an effective method of delivery. First we spoke about the benefits of active living to elementary schools, followed by a 60 day challenge to be active 60 minutes per day. The response from the kids and their desire to ‘have more knowledge’ was unbelievable. A teacher contacted us asking to provide more compliance around our program. We thought of how to provide the appropriate amount of incentive, accountability and follow up for our pilot phase of the program. The aha moment for us, came when we were awarding the grand prize to a small school in Mission BC. The expression on the faces of each of the kids when they became the ‘most active’ school in Canada gave us goose bumps. It was at that moment, we knew this program mattered to the kids, teachers, parents and community.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

National Summary: 71% engagement level across both markets;
Ontario had a 70% participation rate: 4,078 students participating, 2,803 of those were actively using the online portal.
British Columbia had 65% participation rate: 2,211 students participating, and 1,441 of those were actively using the online portal.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

Access and finances to run the program with out any cost to participants for memberships.
We are continually making connections and partnerships with like-minded people, companies, and foundations. We have approached the government regarding access, speaking to Minister of Education and Health. In addition we have had meetings with those in the sports industry where alignment is obvious and both parties benefit.

Our overall goal market is children in elementary schools across Canada. We are expanding our program first within BC and Ontario. Next will be Calgary in 2013-2014.

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

The passion to promote healthy and active living to kids of all ages through preventative health measures. Our organizational factors that have made our program successful is our tracking and reporting system allows us to collect data on several holistic lifestyle factors.Specifically higher risk demographic, kindergarten to Grade 6 students, as childhood obesity levels are rising.

We offer a tracking and reporting system, which allows us to provide pertinent information on several holistic lifestyle factors for a specific at risk demographic, youth. Through our networking we can offer a strong partnership which has allowed us to pair curriculum with tracking and reporting and a grand finale event for kids across Canada. Our Run2end obesity event needs an investor.
