About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Over 50% of water projects in rural Africa are not sustainable after 6 months; this is mainly due to insufficient pre project planning, lack of community participation, inappropriate regard to local culture and lack of appropriate business models. Millions and billions of dollars are being spent on these projects with no real ability for self-sufficiency, sustainability and inability to reach MDGs.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Our vision is to tackle the perplexing challenge of sustainability or lack of, in water, agriculture and development projects in rural areas. For this challenge WaterWays has created "The holistic methodology to address water and development challenges in rural areas" as a solution to tackle sustainability challenges in rural areas. The methodology addresses all variables of the project, specifically the 6 pillars of sustainability: Planning; Business & Economic; Social; Appropriate technology; Environment and Stakeholders, considerations. From this methodology we have created income generating development platforms, business models and social mechanisims to integrate with exsisiting technology thus creating sustainable solutions.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

One of our platforms is the VIC – Village Income Center, tackling the challenge of self-sufficiency. The VIC provides elementary necessities: water and energy, together with a production center to enable income generation for capacity building. Work has started on 3 such projects. In the village of Nkuv, Cameroon, we are in the second phase. First of all we talked to the villagers and had a very inspiring and successful process, in which we agreed together that they require, treatment of drinking water, solar electricity for the center allowing for cellular recharging and more and a production center for cassava grinding and mango drying. Land has been allocated; we have a project design, and are soon to start the implementation phase.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The greatest impact of our process is hope and an incentive to believe that if you put up goals you can achieve them, the villagers are very much engaged. In the past, water and energy have been supplied to rural areas, but they are not provided with the model to manage and maintain them. This innovation does just that, allows for self-sufficient long lasting projects and capacity building, because the VIC revenues are allocated to improve infrastructure and other needs. In Cameroon, 6500 villages are without proper access to water and energy and this is true for most African nations. Our vision is that this model will be replicated from village to village. The business models and social mechanisms are designed generically, only the components change per area. Our intention is to promote this product to NGOs, dev. agencies, government entities and CSR programs of private companies.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We are a for-profit, projects oriented start-up company. Our services will be rendered to any company which needs or wants to comply with the sustainability criteria expected today from projects in international development. We have a list of services needed by project managers to manage and maintain their projects properly. We have a full business plan justifying this issue.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Several NGOs and international organizations (UNDP, Rotery, USAID, WB) deal with the issue of sustainability, usually they have qualifications and criteria, but they rarely have a "step by step", to-do model, or platform. What we are doing is creating generic platforms that can be integrated in existing projects, with existing technology with any project manager, be them private, governmental or NGO. Our value is adding the component of sustainability, through our holistic methodology looking at challenges from the macro view and solving them through each of the 6 pillars on the micro level. We can cooperate with any entity above, by providing our services to the project.
Team

Founding Story

Over my life span I have been a diplomat, CEO of a high-tech company, investor and mediator and all of these have prepared me for this one unique task of assisting in bringing clean water to people in rural areas. Whilst working for CIVC fund, I was in charge of researching the then new segment of clean-tech. I fell in love with water and decided to find my future there. At once it dawned on me that the fact that 780 people do not have access to clean water in not economical, illogical and unacceptable, immediately after that I understood that the lack of sustainability is the main hindrance for success, I had to do something about it.

Barriers: What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

Barriers to entry: are both external and internal:
In rural areas there is a great deal of bureaucracy and projects are usually government related – we have forged good ties with governments and local representatives. The rural area segment is underfunded by governments and undervalued – the issue is becoming more and more attractive and we show how we can scale up projects, and create self-sufficient financial models.
The company works in an NGO environment we believe that currently there is an understanding as per the value of a for profit company, in the space of international development.
It is very challenging to work in these areas, both politically and physically – we enjoy it.
WWS does not yet have a market reputation – working on it and have several strategic influential partnerships.
WWS has not yet succeeded in building a comprehensive ecosystem of financiers and donors for projects – working on it.
WWS lacks proper funding to achieve its marketing goals and operational needs - we are making do with bootstraping for now and our string motivatin, but continuously looking for the right investor for us.

Full Impact Potential: What are the main spread strategies moving forward? (Please consider geographic spread, policy reform, and independent replication/adoption of the idea or other mechanisms.)

We are currently writing together with Water Sanitation Africa an hands-on, step by step sustainability manual to be distributed among any project manager wishing to enforce sustainability in their project.
We have created the "holistic methodology to address water and development challenges in rural areas" as a solution to tackle sustainability challenges in rural areas, we are lecturing and training on this methodology.
We have created the VIC model, which we are promoting.

As for our solutions for rural areas, each is incorporated with a business model for income generation which will be invested back into the system thus providing the financial means for management, maintenance, training and capacity building.

Comments

Hi everybody, I have been working on my start-up for 3 years and find it very difficult to find investors. We are looking for investors which find social enterprises appealing and believe like us that soft components can make a striking difference.
