Having recognized apallic patients as an under served group in the Polish health care system, Janina Mirończuk, a trained nurse, is building a nationwide system of care for patients in a vegetative state. Her medical care clinic offers new treatment methods, professional trainings, support to families of apallic patients, and general awareness building of the apallic state. Janina is therefore creating a space in society for the long-term care of apallic patients, proving that there is "life in a coma". Through a franchise model, Janina is spreading her model of care throughout Poland. The next phase of her work is to build a system of care for patients who are in the process of awakening and for those already awakened, and who do not have families who can care for them.
