Ben & Jerry's: Join Our Core & Scoop For Change

Woah, woah, woah....winners are announced!

Prizes
The five best entries will each scoop a prize of € 10,000 and (nope, that’s not all!) they’ll also get six months mentoring from Ashoka, yep those special people who coined the term ‘social entrepreneur’. The 5 “People’s Choice Award” winners will win a € 1,000 cash prize, ka-CHING! The bright sparks will be assessed in London on the 22nd-23rd of May followed by a compulsory training day on the 21st July in London and then in Uganda between the 12th and 21st of August during 10 days of social business knowledge sharing and local development projects co-run by development gurus VSO. That’s where we sourced our first Fairtrade flavour, Vanilla. Out in Uganda with VSO, you’ll get to live and work with local farmers. That’s what it’s about after all, getting people together to share ideas and sow the seed for sustainable change! And you know what…we’ll even promote your name on a new flavour, to help spread word of your spark of genius – neat, huh! It can’t get sweeter than that! The first 100 people to enter will scoop a year’s supply of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream (that’s the equivalent of 12 vouchers! Redeemable at major retailers only for the value of a standard 500ml pint)

Are you the next Ben & Jerry’s?

Ben & Jerry’s are on the hunt for some bright sparks in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden & the Netherlands, who are creating cool new models for sustainable business which will help make a difference in communities.
(We all live on the same planet, so it’s only fair that we help each other out, right??)

Sound complicated? Well, good news…it’s not!
If you’re between 18 and 34 years old, and have a super sustainable business model stored away that demonstrates the following few things, we’d love to hear from you!

So, ask yourself these questions…

  • Is there long-term demand from local people and business for your product or service? (If so, great! Your idea demonstrates strong financial sustainability!)
  • Will your model leave society better off for the next generation? (It does? Hurrah! Your idea demonstrates a positive social impact).
  • Does your business ensure the local and global environment is looked after, so today’s and tomorrow’s children can all enjoy the beauty of the planet…? (If yes, fantastic! I’m picking up an ‘environmental awareness’ vibe from your idea, and I like it!)
  • Is your approach substantially different from similar initiatives in your field? (Is so, superb! This is the knock out test for innovation!)

What is the Join Our Core Competition?

You could say that this competition is a bit of a treasure hunt for us! We’re trying to find some bright sparks in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands who are keen to build and develop their cool new sustainable business! (It’s something close to our hearts, so why not help others on the same wavelength!)

Who is the entry into the competition open to?

What do we want?...ENTRIES! When do we want ‘em? …Now! The question is, who do we want to hear from? Well, YOU…if you’re are ordinarily resident in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden or the Netherlands and are the founder of your business. You need to be between 18 and 34 years old when you’re submitting your entry.

Do competition entries have to fulfill any specific criteria?

We’re keeping small-print to a minimum (it’s always so darn hard to read!) As far as criteria goes, you’ve just got to incorporate social, environmental and financial sustainability into your business model, and think about awareness across different cultures – that’s important too! Oh, and, although entrants must live in these 5 countries, the business itself can run or do its thing in ANY country in the world…(yep, anywhere!)
Last thing…entries are accepted in English only!

Do you have to pay an entry fee to submit a business idea for the competition?

Whaaat? No, no, no! You’re idea might be worth a million bucks, but all entries are free…!

Why are people from only five countries – the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland and the Netherlands – able to compete?

Well, this is the first time Ben & Jerry’s have run this kind of competition, so we’re playing it safe and starting small. With your help though, we’re hoping this could grow into something really big so we can include more countries!

Why is the competition restricted to people between 18 and 34 years of age? Is that really fair? You’re excluding people who could have really great ideas.

We believe young people now are the leaders of the future (especially when it comes to sustainable business!), so we want young people to dive right in and help make a difference…and it’s no secret that jobs aren’t really easy to come by right now, so this is our way of lending a helping hand.

If this is truly an international competition, why can you only submit entries in English?

We’ll be sifting through all your entries from the Ben & Jerry’s European HQ…and that’s based in the UK!

How is the competition judged? Who decides the winners?

It’s not just down to us, oh no - Ben & Jerry’s, VSO and Ashoka will check out the entries and pick 25 semi-finalists – we’ll then crack open the ice cream and get our expert panel of judges to sit down and hand-pick the best 15 over a scoop or two. Those lucky people will be our finalists and will be sent to Uganda for the next stage of our competition. They’ll need to get their business plan together (by email…no snail mail for us!) by the 29th June 2012. Out in Uganda, we’ll be setting some challenges, where 5 overall “Judges Cup” winners will be selected…

Who are VSO?

VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organisation that works through a group of awesome volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries – they’re pretty cool cookies… They bring people together to share skills and promote understanding (internationally!) and action…and they change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Happy days!

What will the mentoring from Ashoka involve?

Well, let me tell you…the winners scoop themselves 6 months mentoring from Ashoka (through telephone and online meetings) to look at any challenges facing them in their business, and get super super advice to help their business grow and develop.

Why is the competition prize only € 10,000?

Money, money, money! We feel a cash prize of € 10,000 will be a great boost to pretty much any socially minded start–up business…along with having your name promoted on tubs of Ben & Jerry’s; a “money can’t buy” prize!

What other prizes can people win?

You keen beans (that’s the first 100 people to enter) will scoop a year’s supply of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream (that’s the equivalent of 12 vouchers! Redeemable at major retailers only for the value of a standard 500ml pint) …and the 5 overall winners will also have their name promoted on a Ben & Jerry’s flavour in 2013 – cool, huh! Oh and, you know what…there will also be a “People’s Choice Award” where the Join Our Core community pick 5 people to win a € 1,000 cash prize, ka-CHING!

Are there any organizations or companies supporting the competition?

Yes indeed! We’re partnering with our compadres at Ashoka, VSO, Do the Green Thing, Matter & Co, NUS and SIFE – they’ll all be supporting and helping us spread word of our competition…

Who are the judges? How were they selected?

We did a lot of thinking on this one, and we've rounded up a whole herd of experts in the world of innovative social & environmental change…(we think they’ll be brilliant when reviewing all the sustainable business ideas that come in).

Are there any important dates and deadlines to keep in mind if I want to apply?

  • Entries for the competition open on 1st February 2012.
  • The early bird deadline for the first 100 applicants to scoop a year’s supply (that’s 12 tubs!) of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is 15th March 2012, so get your noodle in gear!
  • The final deadline for submitting competition entries is 17:00 (GMT) on 15th April 2012…tick tock! Any entries received after that won’t be included I’m afraid.

When will the winners be announced?

So…our announcement dates will be posted on joinourcore.com but here they are again - get your diary out!

  • The 15 finalists will be announced on 24th May 2012
  • Those 15 lovely finalists will then be asked to submit a business plan by email to Ben & Jerry’s by the 29th June
  • Voting for the “People’s Choice” prize opens on 30th May 2012 and ends on 29th June 2012…so don’t forget to have your say and vote for the best idea!
  • The 5 winners of the People’s Choice Prize will be announced on 6th July 2012
  • The 5 fantabulous winners of the overall competition will be announced on the 22nd August – get that date in your diary!

Ben & Jerry’s are an ice-cream company! What do you really know about sustainable business models?

Have you not heard? We’re so much more than an ice cream company! When Ben Jerry first started the business (back in ’78) it was all about creating a new business model, where social, economic and environmental values would all be equal…(better for everyone that way!)
34 years on, these lovely core values are still guiding the business. We’ve always felt businesses and organisations have a responsibility to give something back to the communities in which they operate. We could talk about it until the cows come home, but why don’t you check out our nifty timeline of Social Mission history here...
