About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In developing countries, their citizens are not recycling, not because they are not worried about recycling, is because recycle is so difficult. So, the current solutions like put lots of recycling centers in every corner, are not working. Campaigns and flyers are having cero impact. To reduce the amount of waste in the landfills, we must engage more citizens in to the recycling process, and that will be possible just making recycling super easy!

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

An app that connects people who already go to recycle, with majority of people who is only willing to separate their garbage, for pass from these houses and collect periodically their separated garbage (a small bag) and leave it on the nearest recycling center. All is automatically coordinated by the app. The app is free for all users, and everyone win prizes for recycling. The innovation occurs when we integrate brands as a sponsors of the recycling user's action. So, brands are fomenting the recycle in citizens, and at the same time, reducing its carbon footprint.

Impact: How does it Work

Imagine a person who arrive late to his house, and needs to cook, walk the dog, etc, do you think they will have time to: separate garbage, accumulate, inform themself about recycling centers, and leave it in the recycling center. Those are the 4 steps to recycling, and a few citizens are willing to do it. People are concerned about enviromental problems, they want to recycle, but is too difficult. If we want to change behaviors, we must make recycling be easy. Now imagine this "Now you can recycling, just separating, and periodically some neighbour goes through your home to withdraw your small garbage bag, leaving it in the recycling center, with just one click, winning prizes, would you like to recycle?" We tested, and people loved it.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We already tested in two cities in Chile. The capital and another small city. Both very different. Santiago is aware about recycling, but Frutillar is the opposite, it requires lot of years to install the recycling issue. In both bicicla was a success, we change the behavior in 300 families who didn't recycle. First we engage young people who already recycle, and some more who was willing to do it by receiving prizes. Connecting these people with different behaviors, we created a collaborative community which it is capable to work together to reduce pollution. In Santiago we recovered 3.2 tons of recyclable garbage, from households who do not recycle. In Frutillar it was a huge impact in the community, seven kids were recycling for a month (they were the "bicicladores"), families coordinated with them the withdraws. It could cost at least 5 years to change the behavior of these people.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Bicycle has been possible to spread cheap because the recycling problem is big issue in the developed countries. ONGs, fundations, Brands and government, all are very amazed with bicicla, and they offer their support to spread the word for free. Aliances with foundations have been crucial, are they who connect us with the community. We have been called to implement bicicla from different municipalities. We could be start a pilot in Perú or Colombia within the next six months. Is very easy to implement bicicla, the city just need a recycling points, and people who not recycle hahahaha.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

we have tested the app in more than two hundred families, and 47% of these users are willing to pay $4.900 CLP monthly (USD $7.2) for this "on click recycling" service. In one side there is the freemium model, which allows to whom pay the fee, have the service without the ads and winning prizes. Brands pays for the direct ads, displayed to users after recycling. Also for brands, we produce stats which improve their sustainability reports.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Municipalities are trying to do house by house the recollection service, using separated trucks for each tipo of waste. This comes with a huge carbon footprint, and it takes a lot of time to be feasible in developing countries. Our approach is using the "collaborative apps" tendency, and his high usability within the comunity, to sell ads to brands and sustainable stats, model which makes this service easy and free for citizens, that is the key, been able to change behaviors on those citizens who do not recycle, in just one clic.

Founding Story

I live between Santiago and Frutillar. When I go to Santiago, I stay on my mom's house. Two years ago I said to her "Mom, we will start to recycling", and she said yes. While passing months, waste started to accumulate, because I didn't have time to go to leave it on the recycle center. We came to the point that she was very upset, so she asked me to get rid of such waste. In that moment I took my bicycle and some bags, and I went to the nearest recycling center. Once there, I realize that I could have led with me another bags from another neighbors who do not recycle. So I decided to create an app that could connect the trips of those people who already recycle, with the majority of houses who are only willing to separate.
